Filter by:The Covid-19 pandemic has generated, in the Latin American population, unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression and substance use associated with the diagnosis of the disease. Consequently, it has been pointed out that a moderating variable for the appearance of these psychological problems is high social and economic vulnerability. OBJECTIVE: To assess differences in psychological problems exposed to the diagnosis of Covid-19 by groups of countries with different incomes. METHODOLOGY: A non-experimental, correlational, prospective, double-blind, cross-sectional study was carried out using the CHERRIES methodological criteria and the sample was Latin American people. The scales used were for depression (PHQ-9), anxiety (GAD-7) and substance use (ASSIST). Likewise, Latin American countries were classified by their income level according to the World Bank. Also, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and an ANOVA analysis of variance were performed, with Post Hoc test, with Bonferroni adjustment
Medical students have higher risks for depression, anxiety, burnout and suicide than the general population and they rarely seek professional help or treatment. The group treatment program "Training for Awareness, Resilience, and Action" (TARA) was originally developed to treat depressed adolescents, targeting specific neuroscientific findings. TARA has shown feasibility and preliminary efficacy in clinically depressed adolescents and corresponding brain-changes in mixed community samples. In the present study feasibility and acceptability of TARA in Swedish medical students are investigated. The design was a single-arm trial with twenty-three self-selected students in early semesters of medical school, with or without mental disorders. All received TARA. Self-reported symptoms of depression, anxiety, perceived stress and psychological inflexibility were collected before and after the intervention. Qualitative data on the participants' experiences of TARA was collected both in focus group interviews and individually during and after the intervention. The investigators hypothesized that 1. TARA would be feasible in medical students, 2. the content would be acceptable, 3. attendance and retention would be good, 4. trends towards improvement would be seen on the self-rating scales and 5. it would be possible and meaningful to explore the students experience of participating in TARA.
It has been widely recognized that the placebo effect has a profound impact on treatment outcome in many different conditions. Recent studies imply that this effect appears even if placebos are openly administered; so called "open-label placebos" (OLP). Compelling evidence suggests the efficacy of OLP in the treatment of pain disorders, neuropsychological syndromes, menopausal hot flushes, depression and allergic rhinitis. Research on the underlying mechanisms of OLP is scarce, yet studies indicate that psychological mechanisms as well as neurobiological processes related to expectation- and prediction mechanisms may play a role. While these effects have been linked to OLP as additional treatment, to date, it has not been examined whether OLP could support discontinuation of drug treatments. Antidepressant discontinuation has been frequently associated with negative side effects, interfering with the discontinuation process and generally discouraging discontinuation. Patients frequently report negative expectations towards the discontinuation process, such as fear of experiencing a relapse and negative side effects. Interestingly, OLP may support antidepressant discontinuation, not only through the generation of (positive) expectations, but also mechanisms related to habituation (i.e. taking pills). The objective of this study is to investigate whether OLP is efficacious in reducing negative side effects caused by discontinuation of antidepressant medication. This preregistration is part of the collaborative research center (CRC) SFB/ TRR289 which aims to characterize the psychological and neurobiological effects of treatment expectations on health outcome (https://treatment-expectation.de) and is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
Stress, anxiety, and depression are common symptoms among public school teachers. Public school teachers are among the top professions reporting stress, anxiety, and depression. The causes are multifactorial and include work-related demands, challenges with students, limited resources, and compassion fatigue. Because of this, teachers are at risk of burnout and leaving or changing their profession. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a considerable impact on teachers due to disruptions in usual education delivery and ability to support students. Recent reports show poorer mental health and decreases in physical activity in teachers since the onset of the pandemic. Effective and implementable strategies are urgently needed to address poor mental health and to foster positive health characteristics in this population. Mindfulness programs decrease feelings of stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. Additionally, mindfulness can improve self-compassion, which may be an important mediating factor in a teacher population. Prior work has shown an inverse relationship between self-compassion and burnout. Currently, there are few studies investigating whether building self-compassion can reduce burnout in public school teachers. The investigators will explore therelationship between participation in a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course and changes in burnout, self-compassion, and other whole person health measures in an educator population. The overall objective of this open pilot study is to examine the feasibility and acceptability of an 8-week remote, group-based MBSR program delivered over Zoom for Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) personnel reporting elevated stress, anxiety, and/or depressive symptoms. Our pilot study results will contribute to the evidence on MBSR in a public-school employee population and inform strategies to optimize implementation of our remote MBSR program within the Vanderbilt Health at MNPS system.
Prevalence of mental health problems and disorders in children and adolescents (hereafter youths) are estimated at 13.4% of which anxiety and depressive disorders account for more than half of these disorders. These rates are increasing, putting a large strain on child and adolescent mental healthcare services (CAMHS) to provide cost-effective treatments with documented long-term effects. However, even when provided the best evidence based treatment, between 40-50 % do not recover and continue to report significant symptom burdens. Thus, there is an immediate need for supplementary and/or new treatment approaches. Physical activity as a supplementary treatment may be one such approach. However, research investigating this approach within this population is scant. This protocol paper describes the development and feasibility trial of a physical activity based intervention targeting anxiety and depressive symptoms in youth. The current study will be based on the UK Medical Council Research Framework (MRC) for developing and evaluating complex interventions. The study will initially focus on the first two phases of the MRC framework. In line with phase one of this framework, key intervention components have been identified in preliminary work, which draw on the effects of moderate to vigorous physical activity, inhibitory learning theory and self determination theory. These components are to be developed into an intervention to be used in CAMHS. Twenty youths with anxiety and/or depressive symptoms will be recruited to the intervention. Physical activity will be measured using the Actigraph GT3X+ monitor at baseline and post-intervention. Outcome measures concerning symptom change will be assessed (anxiety and depression). Semi-structured qualitative interview with participants, caregivers and referring specialists will help identify possible contextual and practical factors associated with delivery of the intervention and explore acceptability of assessment procedures, the intervention, and perceived benefits and barriers to participation. This study will contribute to the development of evidence-based, patient-informed supplementary physical treatment interventions for youth with internalizing disorders in contact with CAMHS. The goal is to examine new avenues of treatment that ultimately may improve upon current treatment outcomes of these disorders.
The most common entrapment neuropathy symptoms, the diagnosis of CTS, is determined by examination findings and by means of the results of electro-diagnostic test. With an increase in disease severity, trap neuropathy, whose symptoms are more pronounced at night, negatively affects the daily life of the person. Deterioration in sleep quality may cause depression and anxiety. Conflicting results have been found in the studies related to these findings. However, no study was found in which daytime sleepiness was evaluated in terms of CTS. The investigators aim in this study is to evaluate the relationship between CTS severity and depression, anxiety, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness.
Antidepressants are widely used to prevent suicidal risk. However, even though the use of antidepressants has been associated with a 40-60% decrease in suicidal risk, they do not seem to be sufficient and appropriate. Indeed recent studies have shown that patients with a history of suicide attempt and/or with current suicidal ideation (SI) respond less well to antidepressant treatments. This suggests that patients with depression with SI may be different from those with depression without SI, thus requiring specific treatments for both SI reduction and depressive remission. In other words, suicidal depression may be a specific subtype of depression. The study aims to characterize the clinical phenotype of patients with suicidal depression vs. those without suicidal depression, and to assess the occurrence of suicidal events at one year in patients with suicidal depression vs. without suicidal depression. Mothers and birthing parents (hereafter referred to as mothers) who have recovered from Postpartum Depression and are well now, receive training to teach a 9 week Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) treatment to mothers who are feeling depressed after giving birth in the last year. Eligible mothers are randomly assigned to one of two groups. Mothers in one group will receive a 9 week group CBT intervention delivered online by the trained Peer facilitators. Mothers in the other group will not receive the CBT group intervention and will continue to receive treatment as usual or regular care for new mothers. Mothers in both groups will complete online questionnaires three times - when participants start the study, nine weeks later and six months after that. Mothers in the intervention group will also complete a few questionnaires once during the intervention and a satisfaction questionnaire at end of intervention. Participant information will help determine if the CBT treatment is helpful for postpartum depression.
The aim of this pilot study is to (1) develop a treatment manual for a 1-Day CBT-Based Workshop for preventing postpartum depression that is acceptable to women; (2) recruit 15 women into a pilot workshop and seek their feedback on content, delivery and assessment procedures; and (3) conduct a small pilot randomized controlled trial (n=60) examining the impact of these workshops on rates of PPD when added to care as usual (CAU) more than CAU alone in addition to a 90-minute information session on PPD.
As of December 2019, the global pandemic of COVID-19 has spread rapidly throughout the world, putting healthcare staff at the frontline. In this context, several factors leading to the appearance of psychiatric symptoms have emerged : work overload, fear of being infected or of infecting, exhaustion… (The Lancet, 2020) Indeed, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, insomnia and increased stress have been reported (Rossi et al., 2020). Furthermore, the increased anxiety and depression symptoms and stress associated with the COVID-19 pandemic may increase the risk of suicide in this already high-risk population. For example, suicidal ideation has been reported in up to 5% of healthcare workers in the United States (Young et al., 2021). It is therefore essential to evaluate the incidence of psychiatric disorders (e.g. PTSD, depression, suicide) and their associated risk factors among the hospital staff. To do so, Montpellier University Hospital healthcare staff was asked their mental state during the first wave of COVID-19.
