Filter by:Introduction and Significance: Preventive interventions have been shown to reduce the risk of developing anxiety and depression, making them a critical focus area in mental health promotion for children and adolescents. Enhancing emotion regulation (ER) skills in young people is one approach to preventing anxiety and depression, as ER involves cognitive processes of modifying thoughts and behaviors to manage emotional responses in different contexts. Executive functions (EF), such as cognitive flexibility, working memory, and inhibition, play a crucial role in ER development and regulation in children and adolescents. Recently, immersive virtual reality (IVR) has emerged as a novel tool for improving cognitive training interventions' accessibility and effectiveness. IVR allows users to experience immersive, three-dimensional environments, where they can interact with objects and events in a highly engaging and realistic way. Considering these developments, this study aims to explore the potential benefits of Enhance VR, a gamified IVR program designed to improve ER skills and reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms among children and adolescents. Methodology: The study will be a longitudinal, parallel, single-blind, randomized controlled pilot trial involving 80 Spanish - or English-speaking participants aged 10 to 16 years old. Participants will be excluded if they have severe psychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders, physical, motor, or sensory impairments, or a risk of experiencing high cybersickness symptomatology during the VR experience. Participants will be randomly allocated into two groups: an experimental group receiving E-Emotio VR and a control group receiving a placebo-based VR relaxation experience. Both VR interventions will last five weeks, two times a week, for 30 minutes. The experimental group will engage in six games targeting cognitive flexibility, planning, reappraisal strategies, working memory, divided and sustained attention, and processing speed. The control group will be immersed in ten different nature-based VR environments and perform relaxation exercises. Baseline and post-intervention assessments will be conducted using age-adapted validated measures of depressive and anxiety symptoms, ER, executive function (working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and planning), and attention. Following the intervention, the assessment battery will be re-administered by a blinded assessor, and statistical analyses will be conducted for all the primary and secondary measures assessed before and after the intervention in both groups. Conclusion: In summary, this study aims to contribute to the development of effective preventive interventions for emotion regulation and mental health symptoms in children and adolescents by promoting ER through gamified VR cognitive training. The study's findings could have significant implications for mental health research, educational and clinical practice. By exploring the potential benefits of VR cognitive training, this research has the potential to inform future studies and clinical interventions aimed at improving young people's mental health and well-being. The gamification of cognitive training interventions could be a powerful tool for increasing engagement and motivation among young people, making them more likely to participate in such interventions.

Recovery Resource Council (RRC) is one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit mental and behavioral healthcare providers in North Texas. Accredited by the Joint Commission in Behavioral Health and licensed by the State of Texas as an Outpatient Treatment Center, RRC strives to promote wellness and recovery through a variety of services and programming. An important component of RRC programming is providing free counseling services to hundreds of U.S. veterans annually. While RRC observes great success for veterans who complete counseling, attendance can be a major obstacle. Veterans who approach RRC for individual counseling services and consent to participate will be randomly assigned to the treatment or control group. The control group will receive counseling as usual. The treatment group will receive $500 gift card payments upon completing their 6th, 12th, and 18th counseling sessions, i.e., $1,500 in gift cards for completing all 18 sessions, the usual prescribed length of therapy. Our primary focus is to examine the impact of the financial incentives on therapy attendance and attrition. In addition, the investigators will estimate the impact on mental health using mental health inventories collected over the course of therapy sessions.
The effectiveness of psychomotor therapy in improving clinical outcomes or quality of life for individuals with depression is unclear. The investigators will assess how the participants' quality of life and psychomotor profile change over time. The study aims to compare the quality of life at 3 months between patients who received 3 months of personalised psychomotor therapy in addition to standard treatment and those who received standard treatment alone. The study lasted for 6 months, and the investigators expects a total of 128 people to participate in this research across several hospital establishments. This study evaluates the effectiveness of two types of treatment, divided into two randomly selected groups. To participate, individuals must have a medical diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) and be between the ages of 20 and 60. They must have depressive symptoms with an HDRS score greater than 16 and provide informed consent. They must be treated or hospitalised at the Centre Hospitalier Esquirol or the Centre Hospitalier Henri Laborit (France). After providing consent, they will undergo an initial clinical interview that evaluates anxiety, self-esteem, pleasure, and quality of life. The therapist assessed the participant's muscle tone, gross motor skills, praxis, manual dexterity, rhythm, processing of sensory information, and body image. Following the assessment, the participant was randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. The experimental group received the usual treatment for depression and underwent psychomotor therapy once a week for 12 weeks. The control group received the standard treatment for depression and underwent weekly telephone interviews. An assessment is scheduled at 1 month to evaluate the participant's health status, including any changes to treatment and assessment of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Another interim check-up is scheduled at 3 months to assess the patient's health status. The interview will also assess any changes to treatment, anxiety and depressive symptoms, quality of life, and psychomotor function. A final visit will be scheduled at 6 months for an assessment of the participant's health. Living with spinal cord injury (SCI) can have a significant negative impact on an individual's mental health and restrict participation in personally valued activities and roles. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that can lessen symptoms of mental health disorders (e.g., depressive symptoms) and improve quality of life through mindfulness and acceptance processes and behavior change processes for valued living. Evidence for ACT for individuals living with SCI, however, is limited to a very few studies that involved in-person group-based ACT and did not focus on depressed individuals with SCI. The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of an 8-week videoconferencing ACT program on improving mental health outcomes in depressed individuals living with SCI. The primary hypotheses are that the ACT group will show improvements in depressive symptoms at posttest and 2-month follow-up compared to the wait-list control group. Investigators will invite 120 individuals living with SCI and reporting depressive symptoms and randomly assign them to either the ACT group or the wait-list control group. The ACT group will receive eight weekly individual ACT sessions guided by a coach through videoconferencing with a booster session at 1-month follow-up. The wait-list control group will continue his or her own care as usual during the study period and have the option to receive eight individual ACT sessions after study participation ends. Data will be collected at pretest, posttest, and 2-month follow-up and compared between the ACT group and the control group over time. About 40% of individuals living with SCI report depressive symptoms and other mental health symptoms, and mental health disorders following SCI are associated with negative long-term outcomes. Managing uncomfortable or painful thoughts and emotions arising from functional limitations and accepting changed lives while moving forward for valued living through ACT skill practice will help individuals with SCI alleviate symptoms of mental health conditions, promote engagement in personally valued activities, and improve quality of life.
The proposed study will include a longitudinal ecological study (Study 1) and a randomised controlled trial (Study 2). The aims will be to (1) identify the sleep-wake profiles in individuals with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) through clustering; (2) examine the associations between sleep-wake features/profiles and the prognosis of MDD; and (3) investigate the anti-depressant effects of sleep- and circadian-targeted intervention in those with MDD and whether sleep-wake features/profiles may moderate the treatment outcomes. In Study 1, a total of 140 participants comprising 70 participants with MDD and 70 age- and gender-matched healthy controls will be recruited. Sleep-wake patterns will be collected for 4 consecutive weeks using actigraphy devices and one-off self-report measures will be collected via an in-house smartphone application, PsyHub. Study 1 and 2 will follow the CONSORT and STROBE guidelines, respectively. The current registration is only for Study 1 of the current research project.
