Filter by:The Early Childhood version of Sugira Muryango is a family-based, home-visiting intervention targeted at early childhood development and implemented with families living in extreme poverty in three districts of Rwanda. This version of Sugira Muryango was first tested in two small pilot studies and a large cluster randomized trial (CRT) was implemented between February 2018 and September 2019 . Pre- to post-intervention findings demonstrated that Sugira Muryango led to improvements in caregiver behaviors linked to child development and health as well as reductions in violence, which were sustained 12 months after the intervention, at which time improvements in child development were observed. The Research Program on Children and Adversity in the Boston College School of Social Work is led by Dr. Theresa S. Betancourt and will, in partnership with the University of Rwanda, FXB-Rwanda and Laterite, conduct a longitudinal follow-up study to investigate the longer-term outcomes of the Sugira Muryango intervention in families who participated in the CRT. The four-year follow-up will examine the long-term and sustained outcomes of the intervention. In particular, the investigators will look at key indicators of long-term positive outcomes for children such as school readiness and transition to formal schooling. Given the lack of longitudinal research on intervention programs supporting ECD in sub-Saharan Africa, this study will contribute greatly to the body of knowledge on the costs and benefits of investments in ECD and guide policy makers and government leaders on making impactful investments in children, leading to long-term benefits for the population at large. The follow-up study involves two activities: Activity A: Pilot to assess measures performance of newly added measures and field test study protocols. Activity B: Four-year follow-up of families who participated in the CRT of the Sugira Muryango intervention.
This study aims to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different online interventions targeting reward sensitivity and depressive symptoms. We hypothesize that behavioral activation, a mindfulness and gratitude intervention, as well as a combination of both, will significantly reduce depressive symptoms and increase reward sensitivity, compared to the waitlist group. In addition, we assume that behavioral activation will have an increased effect on reward sensitivity compared to the mindfulness and gratitude intervention. The investigators will further investigate factors influencing treatment success in another paper based on data of this study (see secondary and other pre-specified outcome measures).
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, postpartum depression and anxiety has increased dramatically. This is problematic as mothers in Manitoba must wait 12-18 months for therapeutic services. Children exposed to maternal mental illness in the first few years of life are at risk of negative lifelong adverse effects. Thus, the investigators of this project created and have tested The Building Emotion Awareness and Mental health (BEAM) program, which is an app-based mental health and parenting program for mothers of young children who are experiencing depression and/or anxiety. BEAM is now ready to be tested in partnership with an established community agency. This partnership will enable counsellors to provide expert-led mental health treatment to supplement and expand upon existing mental health services and will enable an established agency to address widespread unmet family mental health needs through the provision of mobile health (mHealth) content, training, and consultation. A two-arm pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) with repeated measures will be used to evaluate the BEAM program compared to MoodMission (an evidence-based mHealth program) which will be the standard of care. Outcomes will be assessed to determine the effects of the BEAM program on reducing maternal mental health symptoms among a sample of 80 mothers who self-report moderate-to-severe symptoms of depression and/or anxiety (on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, respectively), meet criteria for a current major depressive episode and/or anxiety disorder (as determined on the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview) and have a child between the ages of 6 to 18 months old.
The purpose of this research is to find effective ways of well-being promotion in higher education settings. A unique mindfulness training was developed that includes cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual components. The training is being delivered during class-time of the following courses: Personal Development and College Success, Understanding Health Behavior, and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The objective of the study is to explore the training in regard to dosage effects and the incremental effect of spirituality. While the proximal targets of the intervention are well-being and stress, the ultimate targets are grades and persistence in college. The hypotheses to be tested are: - Mindfulness training will increase the well-being and decrease the stress, anxiety and depression symptomology of the participants. - Mindfulness training will increase the functioning of the participants measured through GPA and hours spent in community engagement. - The "mindfulness training with spiritual components" will have a greater impact than the "mindfulness only training" on well-being. The study is designed as an experimental longitudinal study using a 2 X 3 factorial repeated measures design. The 2 level factor is mindfulness and mindfulness plus spirituality. The 3 level factor is the dose of the intervention (i.e., control, one class a week, and two classes a week).
Depression is a highly disabling disease that is prevalent throughout the world. The treatments proposed and studied to date have shown to be partially effective in treating this condition. Neuromodulation strategies have been used as an alternative, especially for refractory and challenging cases. In this context, studies investigating the effectiveness of transcranial magnetic stimulation, including the theta burst stimulation (TBS) modality, have been increasing in number. However, there is still a lack of information seeking to explore the maximum effectiveness in the TBS modality. Therefore, the investigators developed a new stimulation protocol consisting of 3 TBS sessions per day, with an offer of 1200 pulses per session and a 30-minute interval between sessions. The protocol will be performed for 15 days, totalizing 45 stimulation sessions. The stimulations will be directed to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (F3) and will be performed in a Magventure MagPro R30 device. The investigators will select 100 patients with unipolar major depression, following previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria, and will apply the protocol randomly, dividing the patients into an active and placebo group. The research team hypothesized that the active group patients will have greater improvement in symptoms of depression assessed by the 17-item hamilton depression scale over patients of the placebo group. In addition, other scales will be used for secondary outcomes. The researchers also hypothesized that there will be no difference between patients placed in the active or placebo groups in terms of side effects.
Physical activity (PA) has recently been established as both a primary intervention for mild to moderate, and a secondary therapy for moderate to severe Major Depressive Disorder (MDD; Fortier et al., 2020). Those with mental health disorders do not on average achieve recommended levels of PA (Hallgren et al., 2016), and exercise prescription is extremely lacking in clinical care (Stanton, Reaburn, & Happell, 2015; Stanton et al., 2018). Theory-based behavioural interventions have proven to be an effective tool for improving physical activity levels in clinical populations (Glowacki, et al., 2017; Stanton et al., 2015). More research is needed to understand PA intervention effectiveness for MDD patients (Glowacki et al., 2017), support integration of such behavioural treatments with primary care (Lederman et al., 2017), and address growing concerns regarding mental health during the global pandemic and beyond (Boyce, 2021). This community-based study examines the feasibility of a co-designed, 10-week, asynchronous, web-based beta platform PA intervention for patients with experience of low mood and/or mild to moderate depression, and will provide important parameters for a future randomized-controlled trial (RCT). Primary outcome measures will focus on acceptability and feasibility, including recruitment and retention rates. Secondary measures will include physical activity and depression symptom severity. Behavioural predictors of PA are to be evaluated as tertiary outcomes. Questionnaires will include an adapted participant experience measure, Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. This study features a controlled baseline, post-intervention evaluative design with an embedded quantitative process evaluation with a waitlist control. Participants will be young adults with experience of low mood and/or mild to moderate depression, 19-30 years of age, with access to a device with internet, English speaking, living within British Columbia, CAN., and falling below the minimum Canadian recommendations for PA. Study recruitment will primarily be facilitated by multiple youth mental health primary and community care clinics. This study will contribute to understanding of acceptable, efficacious, behaviour-based and mobile health intervention approaches for young adults with depression. It will also provide young people with a platform to share invaluable feedback to direct innovations in their own alternative care and mental health treatment. If outcome benchmarks set based on previous literature are met or exceeded for each of recruitment, retention, and acceptability, and depressive symptoms trend downwards for intervention participants, then a future randomized controlled trial exploring principally mental health outcomes will be recommended.
The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and tolerability of ascending oral doses of CYB003 in healthy participants with and without major depressive disorder (MDD).
This study aims to investigate the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between perfectionism and psychological distress, by proposing a cognitive-behavioral intervention targeting rumination. This intervention aims at decreasing - or even neutralizing - the effect of the mediator and then examining how this decrease impacts the relationship between perfectionism and psychological distress. A randomized, concurrent, multiple-baseline single-case design will be applied.
This is a single group study of a novel internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy program for older adults with elevated depressive symptoms. This study will enroll approximately 300 older adults throughout the state of Michigan to test the effectiveness of Empower@Home with older adults. The intervention will take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Participants will have lower levels of depression after completing the intervention than before enrollment. Participants will be able to use the internet-based platform with minimal support.
This study is designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Fisher Wallace Stimulator FW-200 to deliver Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES) for the treatment of moderate to severe Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adults.
