Filter by:This study involves the use of an investigational drug called Creatine Monohydrate. This means that the drug has not yet been approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of altitude-induced depression. However, the FDA has not objected to its use to study its safety and effectiveness for preventing altitude-induced depression. This study will help find out what effects, good and/or bad, Creatine Monohydrate has on treating symptoms for altitude-induced depression. Creatine Monohydrate is believed to have an effect on improving symptoms of depression. The safety of Creatine Monohydrate in humans has been tested in prior research studies; however, some side effects may not yet be known.
The adverse effects of poverty at the individual, family, and community level on health outcomes for children are well-established. Material hardship, defined as difficulty meeting basic needs such as food, housing, and consumer goods, has been shown to have negative physical and emotional effects on both children and their parents. Diaper need, defined as a lack of sufficient supply of clean and dry diapers, is an example of a material hardship. Community-based studies of low-income families have demonstrated that between 30-50% of caregivers of young children expressed diaper need. Some of these caregivers with diaper need reported reducing diaper changes, a practice that is associated with diaper dermatitis and urinary tract infections (UTIs). These community-based studies have also shown that diaper need is associated with maternal depression and parental stress, even after adjusting for demographic factors and food insecurity. Diaper need may be a specific modifiable marker of caregiver stress and depression, beyond its role as an indicator of poverty. In this pilot, randomized controlled trial of low-income newborns and their caregivers the investigators will test the feasibility of supplying diapers as an intervention to infants in low-income families and assess if it can improve both a child's health and their caregiver's overall health.
People with COPD have a greater risk for symptoms of depression, anxiety, and fear of breathlessness. Those emotions are independently associated with lower physical activity, poorer quality of life, and higher hospitalization and exacerbations; all independent predictors of survival and costs. There is a lack of treatment options to be routinely used in primary clinics for patients with COPD. Systematic reviews suggest that interventions that promote an accepting mode of response, such as mindfulness, might be more appropriate and effective for managing psychological distress in COPD patients, especially breathing-related anxiety. Hypothesis: A home-based 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for COPD targeted to individuals with symptoms of depression, anxiety, or fear of breathlessness delivered by a mindfulness coach using a combination of in-person sessions and remote video call sessions will be effective in improving emotional and overall quality of life, and measured physical activity.
This is an observational study evaluating the safety and efficacy of dronabinol for the treatment of anxiety and/or depression in older adults. Participants who are prescribed dronabinol as part of a voluntary inpatient stay in McLean's Division of Geriatric Psychiatry will be interviewed about their mood and cognition on a weekly basis while on dronabinol.
Late-life depression affects 2-8% of seniors and causes high rates of caregiver distress and risk of suicide. To exacerbate the problem, antidepressants, the cornerstone of therapy, are resistant in 55-80% of this population. Hence, this group of patients is labeled as having treatment-resistant late-life depression (TR-LLD). Non-pharmacological interventions like meditation could offer significant benefits as augmentation strategies to improve response rate of antidepressants in TR-LLD. One such breath-based meditation intervention called Sudarshan Kriya Yoga is of interest based on highly significant preliminary data in adult patients with treatment-resistant depression, its scalability and relatively low cost to learn this lifelong skill. Thirty patients diagnosed with TR-LLD will learn this intervention over 5 consecutive days by a certified para-professional trainer. This will be followed by 3 weekly 90 min follow-up sessions and then bimonthly sessions for 8 more weeks. SKY consists of a series of breathing techniques, including Sudarshan Kriya (SK), a sequential rhythm-specific breathing exercise. Participants will be asked to practice this technique for 25-30 minutes daily over the next 11 weeks. The investigators will collect clinical as well as feasibility outcome measures. The investigators will also explore if it is feasible to assess the antioxidant Glutathione (GSH) in the brain using a sophisticated magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The investigators suspect that GSH levels are reduced in TR-LLD and they will improve with SKY.
The proposed study seeks to obtain preliminary signal of the tolerability and efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for depressive symptoms in a sample of adolescents with depression and epilepsy. Additionally, effects of tDCS will be assessed via electroencephalographic, cognitive, and psychosocial measures.
Anxiety and depression is common along pregnant mothers and has been found to increase risk for negative outcomes in both mothers and infants. These risks can include low infant birth weight, negative mother-infant interactions, and delayed developmental outcomes. Evidenced-based interventions to support pregnant women experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety are not well studied or widely available, particularly for low-income women of color. These women may not have access to the type of healthcare that would best support their needs and/or they may not be familiar with or trust clinicians who deliver mental health interventions. The current randomized-controlled trial (RCT) aims to address these gaps in the literature by testing the feasibility and efficacy of a doula-supported, computer-assisted delivery of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention designed to reduce pregnancy-related anxiety, depression, and prevent perinatal mood disorders. The 120 participants in the study (60 Black women and 60 Hispanic/Latina women) will be randomized to either receive the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management (CALM) intervention (n=60) or treatment as usual (n=60). Participants assigned to the intervention will complete 6-8 sessions of CALM with a language and ethnically/racially-matched doula who has been trained as a CALM specialist in order to increase participant comfort and reduce the stigma associated with mental health services. Women in both groups will complete assessments of their pregnancy-related anxiety, general anxiety, depressive symptoms, and satisfaction with treatment (CALM or treatment as usual) at baseline, 12-weeks post-baseline, and 10-weeks post-birth. It is hypothesized that women assigned to the CALM intervention will have significantly less anxiety and depressive symptoms post-treatment and post-partum compared to the women assigned to treatment as usual. The results of the current RCT will be used to test the efficacy of the CALM intervention for pregnant women or color and to inform efforts for potential future scalability.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of TAK-653 compared with placebo in maintaining the effect of ketamine treatment on depressive symptoms.
The purpose of this research study is to compare the antidepressant effect of lithium versus placebo in adults receiving ketamine. Lithium is available commercially for depression; ketamine is available commercially and can help the symptoms of depression; however, it has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this use. The FDA has allowed the use of this drug in this research study.
Depressed patients unremitted after monotherapy with citalopram or bupropion will remit following six weeks treatment with the combination of citalopram and bupropion.
