Health Literacy-based Weight Control Intervention

This research will be a continuation of 2015-2017 research projects of smart phone APP research granted by Ministry of Science and Technology. First of all, a four-wave-cross-sectional survey by cluster sampling is used to recruit 90 adolescents aged 13-19 from high school, vocational schools or colleges to test the feasibility of the health literacy-based weight-control program. In the second stage, a two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be applied to recruit 240 overweight or obese teenagers to receive health literacy-based mobile Health App, smart sports watch Fitbit versa during the 12 months weight control program. Based on the previous research evidences, the outcome follow up will be scheduled on 3 months, 9 months, 15 months, and 21 months after the mobile Health Apps intervention. Short-term outcome indicators include health literacy, diet pattern, and dietary behaviors; long-term outcome indicators include BMI z-score, waist circumference. Intention-to-treat analysis, generalized linear mixed models with repeated measures, multiple regression analysis model, and counterfactual causal Inference will be applied to analyze the effectiveness of the interventions.

The Influence of Reducing Diets on Changes in Thyroid Parameters in Obese Women With Hashimoto's Disease

Hashimoto's disease is listed among the most common endocrine causes of obesity. As treatment of obesity in women with Hashimoto's disease is frequently unsuccessful, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different reducing diets and their influence on changes in thyroid parameters in the female patients. A six-month observational/interventional study was performed on 100 women aged 18-65 years, previously diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and obesity and receiving L-thyroxine. The women were randomly assigned to the test group (group A, n=50) following elimination/reducing diets, and the control group (group B, n=50) following reducing diets with the same caloric content (without elimination). Anthropometric and thyroid parameters were evaluated at the beginning, after 3 months and after 6 months of treatment.

Development of an Adaptive Treatment for Weight Loss in People With Prediabetes

This 16-week study will use an experimental approach called the Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trial to help determine which combination and sequence of weight loss program features are most effective in people who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. Participants in the study will be initially randomized to consume either a high or reduced carbohydrate diet. After 4 weeks, participants will be identified as Responders (greater than or equal to 2.5% weight loss) or Non-Responders (less than 2.5% weight loss). Responders will continue with their initial randomized group for the remainder of the trial. Non-responders will be re-randomized to 2nd stage interventions of either including additional exercise counseling and training or beginning a time restricted eating protocol for the remainder of the trial.

Healthy Environments Study (HEROs)

Obesity is a multi-dimensional problem that has roots in infancy and tracks into adulthood. Obesity is represented disproportionately among children and families from low socioeconomic and minority backgrounds, particularly in rural areas that have limited access to food, activity, and health-related services. There is a need for culturally-tailored, effective interventions that can positively impact the environments (home, preschool, community) in which young children grow and develop their eating and activity behaviors. Developing family interventions, particularly for families with limited resources, requires improving caregivers' health literacy and home food/activity environments, and also requires tailoring to accommodate the realities of stressful and unpredictable family settings. The overall objective of this proposed HEROs Study (HEalthy EnviROnments Study) is to develop a companion, technology-based, interactive family intervention that will promote healthy lifestyles for young children in both Head Start and family settings.

The Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Periodontitis

This study aimed to examine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and stage/grade of periodontitis per the current classification of periodontal diseases. 142 patients (82 males/60 females) were included in this study. "2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions" was taken as basis to characterize the stage/grade of periodontitis. As well as age, gender, smoking status, and frequency of tooth brushing, medical data of the patients including hypertension, hyperlipidemia, BMI, and diabetes mellitus were obtained from the patient's hospital records. Obesity was assessed by BMI using the "World Health Organization" criteria.

TOPS for African American Breast Cancer Survivors

For women diagnosed with breast cancer, dietary, weight loss, and physical activity have been linked with clinically significant weight loss; decreased risk of death; reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence; fewer cardiovascular events; and improved physical function. The objectives of these aims are to a) determine if the TOPS materials and format are possible and accepted by overweight and obese African American breast cancer survivors; b) gather data for sample size calculations for a larger future study. To meet these aims, we will collect data to see if participants enjoyed the TOPS program and suggestions for changes to the program to make it fit their needs. Other methods will measure recruitment, retention, and weight change. Aim 1: Examine the feasibility and acceptability of a national, low-cost, community-based, peer-led, weight loss program (Take Off Pounds Sensibly, TOPS) for overweight and obese African American breast cancer survivors in the local chapter of a national African American breast cancer support group (Sisters Network Triangle North Carolina, SNTNC). Aim 2: Assess the weight change of overweight and obese African American breast cancer survivors after 6 months in the TOPS program to gather data for sample size calculations for a future RCT (randomized controlled trial).
