Filter by:Long term treatment with anti-glaucomatous drugs has been shown to increase the incidence of dry eye syndrome with all known consequences such as ocular discomfort and epithelial keratitis. Given that thinning of the tear film appears to be a risk factor for the development or the aggravation of dry eye syndrome, the current study seeks to investigate whether tear film thickness is changed after topical treatment with anti-glaucomatous drugs in healthy subjects. For this purpose, tear film thickness will be measured at baseline and after single instillation of one of 5 study drugs in one randomly chosen eye. In addition, one group of 20 subjects will receive no drug and will serve as a second control. Drug effects on tear film thickness will be compared to the fellow, non-treated eye. In addition, effects on tear film thickness of timolol with preservatives (Timoptic 0.5%) will be compared to timolol without preservatives (Timophtal sine 0.5%) and three lubricants with different viscosity (Genteal HA, Hylo-Comod, Thealoz).
The ASI Non-Invasive Arterial Stiffness Screening Device (ASI Device) is an investigational device under development for the non-invasive assessment of arterial stiffness. The ASI Device is considerably smaller and more cost effective than its commercially available counterparts. As the device is readily portable, it is intended to be targeted for use in the community (or at home), as opposed to within the hospital or clinic setting only. However, as the device is still under development, it is not known whether it is capable of determining arterial stiffness with the same sensitivity and consistency as those already in commercial use. An added variable is the fact the sensor for the ASI Device is located on the fingertip. Validation is a prerequisite for obtaining Health Canada approval of devices for diagnostic purposes. The ASI Device has not been tested against other instruments capable of providing similar measurements. Therefore, a clinical trial to compare the ASI Device against similar devices is necessary. The study will compare measurements of arterial stiffness and other central haemodynamic parameters obtained with the ASI Device against similar measurements from devices that have already been approved for this purpose by Health Canada/United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Consultation Service provides recruitment services and facilitates the enrollment of research participants into UCSF clinical studies. The Recruitment Services will be accessible to all researchers at UCSF and affiliated institutions and will address the common problems that investigators encounter in the recruitment process. Recruitment Services considered and integrated Committee on Human Research (CHR) and HIPAA regulations for ensuring human subject rights, participant privacy, and data security into the recruitment workflow and data collection/extraction methods. Recruitment Services, therefore, requests approval to implement these processes systematically for all studies that have already obtained CHR approval to begin recruitment activities.
