Filter by:Emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression are significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated, even though they are some of the most prevalent mental health conditions, especially among young individuals. Approximately 50% of mental health disorders manifest by the age of 14, and around 75% appear by the age of 24, underscoring the critical importance of addressing these issues during adolescence. Unfortunately, during this developmental stage, early warning signs and even fully developed clinical conditions often go unnoticed, undiagnosed, and untreated. Nonetheless, there is a lack of established, evidence-backed procedures aimed at reaching out to adolescents at risk of developing emotional disorders. Urgently required is a fundamental shift in our approach by creating intervention protocols that allow for the early identification and treatment of at-risk adolescents, thus averting the potential development of severe mental health disorders as they mature. The selective prevention of mental health issues is a crucial element in assisting at-risk adolescents in flourishing before emotional disorders progress. To address this gap, PROCARE+ was conceived as a modularized selective prevention program for adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Using a personalized medicine approach, PROCARE+ successfully allowed for the adaptation of intervention protocols according to the specific needs of each individual, while also identifying vulnerable individuals based on risk factors. PROCARE 2.0 aims to enhance the PROCARE+ intervention by maximizing and extending its effects beyond the population in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. PROCARE 2.0 stratifies adolescents based on their risk and resilience status and will deliver, alongside a core intervention, new specific add-on modules designed to address risk factors identified by adolescents: : 1) Situations of rejection, bullying, and cyberbullying; 2) Addiction to new technologies such as video games or mobile phones and other substances like alcohol, tobacco, and drugs; 3) Improvement of healthy lifestyle habits related to nutrition, sleep, and physical activity; 4) Enhancement of stress-related situations: Ecoanxiety or exam-related anxiety; and 5) Improvement of parent-child relationships and situations of high expressed emotion (parent module). Furthermore, emphasis will be placed on the study of reinforcement sessions to maintain the results following the initial intervention (based on central and additional modules depending on the detected risk factors). Adolescents will be assigned to different experimental groups with or without reinforcement sessions in order to increase the effectiveness of the intervention. PROCARE 2.0, like PROCARE, aims to reduce the impact of risk factors and enhance protective factors that will ultimately lead to lasting positive effects for adolescents. It will combine quantitative analyses, with a special focus on vulnerable groups in a disaggregated approach by sex, gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. The PROCARE 2.0 project is expected to have a significant impact. Its outcomes will continue to contribute to the identification and preventive treatment of adolescents at risk of emotional mental disorders at an early stage, before they incur personal, social, and economic costs.It will be designed to be an acceptable, scalable, and sustainable selective prevention program, striving to increase its effectiveness beyond the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, ultimately contributing to the prevention and reduction of the prevalence of mental disorders in young people.

This two-armed randomized controlled trial investigates the efficacy of a web-based emotion regulation intervention in a transdiagnostic sample. The sample includes participants diagnosed with anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, and healthy controls without a current psychiatric diagnosis. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group, receiving a web-based emotion regulation program, or a waitlist control group, which will have delayed intervention access after eight weeks. The intervention is grounded in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), featuring everyday emotion regulation exercises, and psychoeducation delivered through video and audio files. Outcome measures include emotion regulation abilities, well-being, anxiety, depression, eating disorder symptoms, personality pathology, and self-esteem, evaluated at four and eight weeks post-baseline.
The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about moderate-intensity indoor cycling interventions in women's sport student-athletes transitioning into college and collegiate sport. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: Aim 1: Establish preliminary feasibility for the intervention based on recruitment and retention rates. Aim 2: Assess efficacy through comparison of pre- and post-intervention mental health outcomes scores between experimental and control groups. Exploratory Aim 3: Explore associations between exercise, athletic, and academic identities and mental health issues post-intervention. Participants will complete an online questionnaire. This online questionnaire will be given before the program begins and after the 4 weeks. The questionnaire will ask about the participants' basic information, the participants' experience with exercise, and the participants' transition experience including mental, physical, and social factors. Participants will be asked to attend an in-person 45-minute exercise class once a week at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) Student Recreation Center. Participants enrolled in the program will be asked to complete a self-report form during each weekly practice including heart rate (before and after practice) and ratings of perceived exertion. Heart rate will be measured during practice, smart devices (i.e., Apple Watch, FitBit) are not required.
In this study, the investigators will test the effectiveness of a digital, low intensity mental health intervention in depressed individuals. There will be two conditions: the Common Elements Toolbox- Behavioral Activation (COMET-BA) intervention and a waiting list control group. COMET-BA will include 4 weekly modules which will focus on elements of behavioral activation, including positive activity scheduling, avoidance, values, and change plans. A similar intervention, was previously tested in an online worker sample and participant feedback was integrated into the current version of the intervention.
The proposed study will include a longitudinal ecological study (Study 1) and a randomised controlled trial (Study 2). The aims will be to (1) identify the sleep-wake profiles in individuals with MDD through clustering; (2) examine the associations between sleep-wake features/profiles and the prognosis of MDD; and (3) investigate the anti-depressant effects of sleep- and circadian-targeted intervention in those with MDD and whether sleep-wake features/profiles may moderate the treatment outcomes. 70 depressed participants from Study 1 will be randomized to Study 2 for the Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TranS-C) group and the care-as-usual (CAU) group in a 1:1 allocation ratio. The study period will be 8 weeks. Major assessments at baseline and immediate post-treatment will be managed by an independent assessor (a research assistant, RA) who is blind to the group allocation. The proposed trial and the nested pilot study will follow the CONSORT and STROBE guidelines, respectively. The intervention will be provided free of charge.The current registration is only for Study 2 of the current research project.
Purpose: Chemotherapy treatment is a very different and difficult process. Considering the many physiological and psychological problems that patients experience during and after the treatment process, chemotherapy symptoms and psychological problems affect the quality of life of patients. Along with the burden of the disease, patients who experience physiological problems during chemotherapy may experience depression, stress, and anxiety. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the effect of music played during chemotherapy on depression, anxiety, stress levels, and chemotherapy symptoms. Method: This study was conducted in a randomized controlled manner with a pretest-posttest control group random design model. The study population consisted of patients receiving treatment in the outpatient chemotherapy unit of Maltepe University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. The study sample consisted of 49 patients who met the inclusion criteria. The power analysis determined that the sample number was 42 people in total, 21 in the experimental group and 21 in the control group. However, considering the data losses, it was decided that the number would be 25 experimental and 25 control. When one patient from the experimental group did not want to continue, the study was completed with 49 patients, 24 in the experimental group and 25 in the control group. The music recital will be applied 4 times in total, once a week, until the patients complete 1 cycle, i.e. 4 sessions. Patients in the experimental group were administered the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS -42) and Edmonton Symptom Diagnostic Scale (ESDS) before each session until the completion of one cycle, and music was played for 20-25 minutes during chemotherapy. After chemotherapy, the scales were applied again. In the control group, the scales were applied before chemotherapy treatment, no intervention was made during chemotherapy and the scales were applied again after chemotherapy.
Chronic health conditions (CHC) commonly share the challenge of impaired health-related quality of life, negatively impacting the lives of millions of people in the United States. Long term effects for living with a chronic health condition are likely to include poor self-management behaviors, which are related to avoidance of disease related thoughts and feelings (e.g., health anxiety) and can be addressed directly with psychosocial interventions. With the focus on fostering values driven and meaningful behavior while accepting thoughts and feelings, ACT may prove to be a particularly effective approach for individuals coping with the challenging symptoms and effects of having a chronic health condition. Previous web-based ACT interventions for CHCs have focused on building ACT skills for a narrow subset of CHCs (e.g., breast cancer, diabetes, tinnitus). While there is added benefit for a self-help program for populations with specific stressors or conditions, there is also a high prevalence of comorbidity in CHCs, shared challenges in illness management and coping, and clear evidence that ACT works effectively across CHCs to improve quality of life. Thus, our goal of this research project is to evaluate a new 6 session, online, self-guided ACT program for adults with chronic health conditions broadly to improve their quality of life and wellbeing through a randomized controlled trial. The specific aims are: 1. To evaluate the feasibility of an initial prototype of ACT program for adults with CHC's as indicated by recruitment, retention, and adherence rates. 2. To evaluate the acceptability as indicated by self-reported program satisfaction and qualitative feedback following the course completion. 3. To identify ways to further refine the program based on participant self-reported satisfaction with sessions and open-ended text-based feedback. 4. To test the efficacy of the program on improving quality of life among adults with CHC's.
Since 2012, the Online Therapy Unit has been offering Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT). ICBT represents a convenient method for individuals to access care for depression and anxiety. In ICBT, clients receive access to standardized lessons that provide the same information and skills as traditional face-to-face CBT. ICBT courses often span 6-12 weeks. There is now growing evidence that clients with symptoms of depression and anxiety can benefit from a single session brief intervention that offers practical strategies for improving mental health, but the investigators are uncertain about the interest in such a lesson among those seeking online mental health care. The Things You Do Course, therefore, is designed to provide clients with 5 key actions that clients can take to improve their emotional wellbeing. In this study, the Online Therapy Unit (OTU) is examining how effective the Things You Do Course is in helping clients manage their symptoms of depression and anxiety and improve their emotional wellbeing. The OTU is also exploring the extent to which clients are satisfied with the course, and what factors contribute to improvements in symptoms, as measured by a number of questionnaires. The research will ultimately be used to improve how the OTU will deliver ICBT and to inform whether to include the single session course within existing online mental health service options.
The goal of this type I hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial is to test a family strengthening (FS) model delivered through multiple family groups (MFG) combined with a virtual peer mentoring program called TeenAge Health Consultants (Virtual TAHC) aimed at addressing emotional and behavioral problems among youth born in the U.S. to parents resettled as refugees. The specific aims of the study are: Aim 1: To systematically adapt an evidence-based family strengthening (FS) model delivered through multiple family groups (MFG) combined with a peer mentoring program (Virtual TAHC) (Goal 1). Aim 2: To assess preliminary short- and long-term impact of the combination intervention (MFG + Virtual TAHC) on behavioral emotional disorders (aggressive behavior, antisocial behaviors, anxiety, depression, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD]) related to intergenerational trauma among SGRC in the trial (Goal 2). Aim 3: Utilizing mixed methods and applying the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, Sustainment (EPIS) framework, examine implementation strategies, facilitators, and barriers of the RRF4H intervention (Goal 3). Participants will receive: 1. Family strengthening intervention delivered through multiple family groups (MFG) where children and one of their biological parents will participate in 16 weekly group sessions to discuss common problems and how to address them. 2. The youth in the intervention will participate in a peer mentorship program called TeenAge Health Consultants (TAHC) consisting of 16 weekly virtual sessions where they interact with other youth to learn about important topics including how to deal with conflict, stay out of trouble, deal with stress, avoid drugs and other topics. Researchers will compare the intervention group to a control group that will receive the usual care to see if the intervention group shows improvement in symptoms compared to the usual care group.
