Infrared Laser and Classical Ballerinas' Feet

Overuse injuries and painful symptoms in athletes and dancers (especially classical ballerinas) may lead to reduced functional performance. However, laser application may reduce pain and increase physical conditioning. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the immediate and long-term effects of infrared laser on classical ballerinas' feet. The hypothesis investigators was that the infrared laser would be able to reduce pain perception and enhance functional performance in ballerinas.

The Relationship Between Preoperative Serum Cytokine Level and Lenght of Stay in Hospital, Postoperative Pain Intensity, Functional Status, Joint Position Sense and X Ray Findings

Serum cytokines was assosiated with symptoms and progression of osteoartritis. It is unknown whether these cytokines have a predictive role on severity of symptoms after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or not. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between the preoperative serum cytokine level (SCL) and lenght of stay in hospital, postoperative pain intensity, functional status, joint position sense and X ray. Grade 4 osteoartritis degeneration who intern the hospital for total knee arthroplasty surgery. Serum Cytokine Levels (IL-6, TNFα, IL-1β) will be assessed before surgery. Pain intensity at rest/activity and valgite angle will be evaluated before surgery, postoperative 72 hour and postoperative 6 weeks. Functional status and joint position sense will be assessed before surgery and 6 weeks after surgery. Lenght of stay in hospital (LOS) will be recorded.

Effect of Music on Pain in Cancer Patients in Palliative Care Service: a Randomized Controlled Study

Background: Palliative care services can be applied in chronic, life-threatening conditions such as cancer, and provide physical, mental and psychological support to patients worldwide. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of music on pain, anxiety, comfort and functional capacity of cancer patients received care in a palliative care unit. Methods: The population of this randomized controlled trial consisted of cancer patients hospitalized in the Palliative Care Service of a Training and Research Hospital between July 2018-July 2019. The sample of the study included 60 patients (30 interventions/30 controls) who met the inclusion criteria. The patients in the intervention group were given a total of six music sessions, ten minutes each with the Turkish classical music in maqams (modes) of their choice (Hejaz or Rast accompanied by an expert tambour (drum) player).

An Evaluation of MBSR and CBT for Veterans With Chronic Pain

Approximately fifty percent of Veterans report chronic pain. Management of chronic pain is often compounded by other life problems, including depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. Use of opioids for pain management entails risk of harm, and effective non-pharmacologic approaches to chronic pain management are needed. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and group Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) are programs that teach skills to improve functionality and quality of life for people with chronic pain. However, studies of MBSR and the group form of CBT-CP for chronic pain remain limited. In the proposed trial, MBSR will be compared to CBT-CP and usual care, with assessment of pain interference and other outcomes at 6-month follow-up. If MBSR and group CBT-CP are shown to be effective in improving outcomes, it would support use of these modalities for chronic pain.

Translation and Validation of the Abbey Pain Scale in Stroke Patients (ABBEY-F)

Pain is common after a stroke, affecting up to 49% of patients within 2 years of the event. They include headache, musculoskeletal pain, spasticity and central neuropathic pain. A wide range of patients have communication problems after stroke that make it difficult to assess pain. Yet there is a major impact of pain on the quality of life of these patients. Some tools have been validated to assess pain in non-communicative patients, but none are specific to stroke patients. The Algoplus scale is commonly used in intra-hospital care in France. The Abbey Pain Scale is not translated into French, and could provide a more accurate pain rating for non-communicative patients. The objective is to validate a French version of the Abbey Pain Scale for stroke patients. It is an observational study with longitudinal data collection. It is planned to include 120 patients from the neurology department of the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital.

A Comparison of Two Different Single Doses of Prednisolone on Endodontic Inter-appointment Pain

The purpose of this prospective randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study is to compare the efficiency of 2 different single doses of pre-operative oral prednisolone (20 & 40 mg) for the control of inter-appointment endodontic pain in patients diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. The tested null hypothesis is that there is no difference in pain relief between the two doses. Seventy-two patients presented for treatment at Dental University Hospital will be selected. The inclusion criteria are systemically healthy patients (ASA classification I or II), with no contraindications to corticosteroids (osteoporosis, systemic fungal infections, poorly controlled insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, ocular herpes simplex, primary glaucoma, allergy to corticosteroids, ulcerative colitis, a compromised immune status, and major psychosis). Patients under 18 years, pregnant or breast-feeding, took an analgesic agent within the last 6 hours, those with un-restorable teeth, teeth with periodontal disease will be excluded. Patients having mandibular molars with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with normal periapical area and moderate-severe preoperative pain (i.e. ≥ 34 mm on a visual analog scale (VAS)) will be included. Subjects will be randomly divided into 3 groups, namely placebo (control), 20 mg prednisolone and 40 mg prednisolone according to a computerized random numbers. Each participant will receive a single oral dose of either formulation (drug or placebo) 30 minutes before starting endodontic treatment. All medications will be placed in identical containers and will be coded; thus, both the operator and the patients will be blinded to the type of medication. Endodontic treatment will be performed and canals will be instrumented to a minimum of size 30, .04 taper following the standardized protocol. Postoperative pain will be assessed by using a visual analogue scale at 4, 12, 24 and 48 hours after initiation of therapy.
