Gastrointestinal Tolerability to Agavins and Impact on Host-gut Microbiota-metabolism Interactions Modulation

Agavins are branched neo-fructans and prebiotic fiber found in Agave plants. In preclinical studies, agavins have demonstrated an effect in reversing metabolic disorders associated to overweight and obesity through the modulation of gut microbiota activity and composition, showing their interesting potential in the context of high obesity and cardiovascular diseases prevalence in Mexican population. However, current information about gastrointestinal adaptation and effects of agavins intake in humans is scarce. We hypothesized that increasing amounts of agavins up to 12 g/day, will be well tolerated by healthy and obese adult participants, but with differences between these groups, modulating gut microbiota activity and structure differentially, as well as the metabolic status after a 5-week dose-escalation intervention.

It will target overweight and obese children with intellectual disability (ID). The primary outcomes will be both fatness-related and fitness-related outcomes. In addition, the effect of the intervention on blood pressure will be evaluated as the secondary outcomes.

The goal of this study is to evaluate components of a preschool-based intervention designed to (1) increase children's nutrition knowledge, (2) increase physical activity in childcare settings, (3) increase emotional, behavioral and eating-related regulation, and (4) provide guidance to parents/caregivers about appropriate parenting and child-feeding strategies that promote healthy eating behaviors, dietary patterns and physical activity in preschool-aged children. The long-term goal is to help children develop healthy habits that reduce risk for obesity.

Pre-Operative Airway Assessment of Patients With Morbid Obesity

Backround:The incidence of difficulty in laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation is more common in obese patients. There are conflicting data on factors predicting difficult intubation. Also, these predictors are uncertain when video laryngoscopy (VL) is used. In this study we aim to investigate the correlation between airway assessment tests, anthropometric measurements and Modified Cormack-Lehane Classification (MCLC), assessed by C-MAC-D-blade VL and predictive values for intubation difficulty in class-III patients. Methods: This prospective observational study was performed in 121 obese patients (Body mass index (BMI)≥45kg/m2) undergoing bariatric surgery. BMI, modified mallampati scores (MMS), thyromental distance (TMD), sternomental distance (SMD), interincisor distance (IID), and neck, waist, and chest circumference were all recorded preoperatively. Endotracheal intubations were performed with a C-MAC D-blade VL. The glottic view and intubation difficulty were determined according to the MCLC. MCLC I-IIa was recorded as the group with no risk of a difficult intubation, the MCLC IIb-III was recorded as the group with risk of a difficult intubation and the MCLC-IV was recorded as the group with a difficult intubation. The correlation between the airway tests, anthropometric parameters and the MCLC, as well as their sensitivity and specificity in predicting the intubation difficulty based on the MCLC, were analyzed. The duration of intubation, number of attempts, external laryngeal maneuver, the equipment requirements (style, guide), and complications during intubation were recorded.

Cytokine Levels of Patients Who Underwent Obesity Surgery

Obesity is an important public health problem worldwide. There are large regional differences in the prevalence of overweight and obesity. Obesity is a growing problem in both developed and low-income countries. Obesity is a common condition characterized by excessive fat accumulation in adipose tissue. It is associated with metabolic, hematological and musculoskeletal complications, increased risk of dyslipidemia, heart disease, diabetes and some malignancies, leading to a shortened life span. Inflammation from adipose tissue has been identified as the main source of systemic inflammation and may also be associated with insulin resistance. Adipocytes and adipose tissue-related macrophages from obese individuals are an important source of inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1 and MCP-1. It has also been shown that decreased levels of IL-10, an anti-inflammatory cytokine, are associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome.We aimed to evaluate changes in 13 different proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass.
