Reducing Obesity Health Disparities in Hispanic Youth

The proposed study will evaluate the efficacy of a family-based obesity prevention intervention in increasing physical activity and improving the quality of dietary intake among Hispanic Youth. Additional primary outcomes that will be examined include drug use and sexual risk behaviors. Secondary outcomes include examining the effects of family functioning and BMI. The knowledge expected to be gained in this study will have strong implications for prevention as well as contribute to the reduction of obesity-related health disparities seen in Hispanic youth.

Anhedonia and abnormalities in reward behavior are core features of overweight/obesity (OW), a highly prevalent condition within MDD populations, and is independently associated with reward disturbances. The investigators therefore aim to investigate the brain substrates subserving reward and motivation in adults with overweight/obesity. The primary aim of this pilot study is to determine whether associations exist between obesity and decreased performance on the respective motivation/reward paradigms.

Healthy Weight for Teens

POWER is uniquely positioned to evaluate characteristics of multi-component PWM programs that are associated with "favorable" health outcomes for treatment-seeking youth with obesity. The POWER Data Coordinating Center developed ranking reports of the 33 participating sites based on weight status change at 6 months. An in-depth review of program design of 4 "top-performing" sites was conducted. A unique feature identified was offering an individual program orientation session to patient-families prior to the start of the multi-component PWM program. This orientation helped patient-families better understand the program's expectations, and offered an opportunity to evaluate readiness to change, barriers for making lifestyle changes, and mental health problems. This information was used to tailor the intervention to better meet the needs of participating patient-families. When a survey of program characteristics was conducted of the 33 participating sites, this "top-performing site" was the only one to offer such a program orientation session prior to patient-families starting the PWM program. Therefore this program feature was included as part of the "bundle of program enhancements" (BPE) for this proposed pragmatic pilot study.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy operations performed for morbid obesity are among the most common methods in the world. Gastric or intestinal bypass surgery with or without sleeve gastrectomy is thought to be more effective in controlling both weight loss and metabolic diseases. For this purpose, Roux-en-y gastric bypass, transit bipartition, duodenal switch, jejunoileal bypass are performed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of jejunoileal bypass surgery on weight loss and metabolic diseases in patients with sleeve gastrectomy.

Evaluation of an Enhanced Delivery Model for Go NAPSACC

This study will compare the effectiveness and cost of Basic and Enhanced delivery models for Go NAPSACC on child care centers' use of evidence-based nutrition and physical activity practices. Technical assistance (TA) coaches from Child Care Aware of Kentucky will lead delivery. Half of the TA coaches will deliver Go NAPSACC using the Basic model and the other half will deliver the program using the Enhanced model. It is hypothesized that the Enhanced model will result in greater use of evidence-based nutrition and physical activity practices and will also be more cost effective.
