Obesity has reached pandemic proportions in recent years, affecting not only the physical health, but also the mental health, of obese people. According to Spain's National Health Survey 2011-12, the prevalence of obesity in the adult population of Spain was 17%, having increased by 2.5% since 2006. Therefore, a constant and worrying increase in the prevalence of obesity is being observed, which is having a great impact, both individually, in terms of health and quality of life, and socially, inter alia, by raising health expenditure due to increased morbidity. In this context, the desirability of a comprehensive approach that includes psychological intervention in attending obese patients (Rev Cochrane, 2006), has been given greater prominence. Paying attention to the emotional and psychopathological aspects related to obesity has proven to be an action that could have positive impact on obesity intervention models. The aim of this project is to measure, through a clinical trial, the efficacy of a psychotherapy group program for obesity patients who are attended by the consulting endocrinologist at the Infanta Leonor Hospital (Madrid). The impact of body mass index, psychological wellbeing, psychopathology and quality of life of two experimental study groups will be compared, one a control group of patients that follows the standard treatment, the other an experimental group that follows not only the standard treatment, but also the psychotherapy group intervention program.
To initiate a low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) or ketogenic dietary (KD) intervention among a cohort of outpatients with either schizophrenia or bipolar illness who also have metabolic abnormalities, overweight/obesity, and/or are currently taking psychotropic medications experiencing metabolic side effects.
The aim of the study is to investigate the long-term effects of the ketogenic diet and exercise (including interactions) on health markers, exercise performance and wellbeing outcomes in sedentary overweight individuals.
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center, parallel group study on overweight and obese individuals following healthy lifestyle consisting of calorie-reduced diet (20% calorie restriction) and increase in daily activity (1000 steps more per day once compared to the baseline steps)
This study will evaluate the impact of blueberry consumption on markers of gastrointestinal health including gut microbiota, intestinal permeability, and gut-derived inflammation in those vulnerable to a unhealthy gut milieu. All participants will consume a blueberry powder and a placebo in this crossover study.
This is a single institution study. All patients, one year after sleeve gastrectomy will be included. All will have a CT scan looking for clip ascent. For patients with chronic gastric symptoms such as retrosternal burning, regurgitations, and epigastric pain, a pH-metry will be performed. Those symptoms appeared at least 6 months after the surgery. A second consultation is done one year after. The aim of the study is to correlate clip ascent, pyrosis proved by ph-metry and epigastric symptoms after sleeve gastrectomy. The demographic data collection confirms the definition of clip ascent, define its frequency, and look for correlation with the median weight loss.
VA MapTrek is a mobile-phone-based web application that allows participants to take a virtual walk in interesting locations around the world while tracking their progress against the progress of other veterans on an interactive map. Steps are counted using a commercially-available triaxial accelerometer (e.g., Fitbit), and users see their progress overlaid on Google Maps. The objective of this study is to report activity levels to veterans, thereby encouraging them to walk more. Once participants know how to text and use Google maps, no additional training is needed. VA MapTrek does not require a special app, so there are no logins or passwords to remember. Simply registering one's Fitbit and mobile phone at an initial enrollment meeting suffices.
The broad, long-term aims of this scope of work are to investigate the effects of the Pritikin Program to the general population. The study will test the effects on individuals from the community with dysfunctional lipids, blood pressure and glycemic control. To assess the effectiveness of the Pritikin Program in the community, the effects of Pritikin lifestyle intervention on overall health will be investigated.
To examine weight loss and acceptability of a modified WW program. This study is designed to detect differences in weight loss at the end of 24 weeks of intervention.
