A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study of Droxidopa for Fatigue in Parkinson's Disease

This is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial comparing droxidopa to placebo for fatigue in Parkinson's Disease. The primary outcome measure is change in the Parkinson's Disease Fatigue Scale, a 16-item scale that measures the physical effects of fatigue as well as the impact of fatigue on daily functioning and activities, including socialization. Secondary outcomes are the PDQ-39, a 39-item self-report questionnaire assessing Parkinson's disease-specific health related quality over the last month in 8 different dimensions of function and well-being, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, a questionnaire querying 8 situations for which the subject will rate the likelihood of falling asleep. There will be a screening visit (SC), baseline visit (BL), 2 clinic visits at 6 and 12 weeks (V01, V02), and telephone contact at 4 weeks and 8 weeks (T1, T2). In-person visits will include review of informed consent, concomitant medication review, adverse event review, pill counts, vital signs (including supine blood pressure), and outcome measurements. Telephone visits will include review of informed consent, concomitant medication review, and adverse event review.

The objective of this study is to measure sympathetic nervous system function and stress responses in patients with clinically documented and self-reported chronic fatigue that is worsened by stress, compared to healthy controls. Baseline norepinephrine (NE) levels and stress-induced NE levels in patients who fulfill criteria for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and who self-identify with stress induced worsening fatigue, will be compared to data from normal individuals pre and post-stress.

The Effects of T4 Versus T4/T3 on Psychological Distress After Total Thyroidectomy in Thyroid Cancer Patients

The goal of this research is to compare the effects on psychological distress between T4 mono replacement group and T4/T3 combination replacement group after total thyroidectomy in thyroid cancer patients. 1. Subjects: - Psychologically distressed patients, such as depression, anxiety, and fatigue patient after total thyroidectomy with thyroid cancer are considered for participation. Screening of distress after total thyroidectomy is used HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) ≥ 8 for depression or anxiety, and MDASI-F (MD Anderson Symptom Inventory -Fatigue) ≥ 4 for fatigue. 2. Randomization: - Using the table of random sampling numbers, patients assign to T4 mono replacement group or T4/T3 combination replacement group. 3. Evaluation for distress: - Assessment will be made baseline, 4 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks to investigate change of psychological distress (depression, anxiety, and fatigue). Level of distress after thyroidectomy will determine using Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) for depression or anxiety, and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) for fatigue.

The Effect of a Caffeine Blend on Reaction Time, Mental Performance and Focus in Athletic Males

This is a cross-over design study in which subjects arrived to the lab and were assigned a supplement to ingest. Prior to ingestion subjects completed baseline reaction time testing along with a questionnaire. Thirty minutes after ingestion subjects filled out the same questionnaire, completed a reaction time test, followed by a series of dynamic exercises. After the last exercise was finished subjects filled out the questionnaire, completed another reaction time test and repeated the series of dynamic exercises. Following the exercises, subjects filled out the questionnaire and completed a fourth round of reaction time testing. In total subjects would complete 2 rounds of dynamic exercises and 4 rounds of reaction time testing with heart rate being recorded before and after the dynamic exercise rounds. Subjects were told to wash-out for 7 days and return to the lab to complete the same testing but on the alternative supplement.

Achieving Resilience in Acute Care Nurses (ARISE).

Nurses are exposed to myriad stressors, both in the workplace and in their everyday lives, which can lead to adverse personal and professional outcomes. While workplace stress cannot be eliminated, nurses can learn techniques to build resilience, mitigate stress, and decrease fatigue. Organizational employee health, wellness, and assistance programs are all intentioned to provide this type of support; however, nurses often lack awareness of options and opportunities, and access can be a challenge. The purpose of the proposed study is to assess the outcomes of a multi-modal intervention and toolkit, ARISE, designed to enhance resilience and promote awareness of organizational resources for health, wellness, and employee assistance. We will evaluate the impact of participation in ARISE on resilience and other outcomes in nurses in critical care and trauma settings. As a Best Practice Spotlight Organization designated by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), this project will incorporate relevant recommendations from Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) related to Workplace Health, Safety, and Well-being of the Nurse; and Preventing and Mitigating Nurse Fatigue in Health Care.

A Longitudinal Study of Cancer-related Fatigue Among Colorectal Cancer Patients During Adjuvant Chemotherapy

Worldwide, nearly 1.25 million patients are diagnosed with and more than 600,000 patients die from colorectal cancer each year. The third leading cause of death is colorectal cancer in Taiwan 2012. The current treatments for colorectal cancer including surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy are prescribed to improve survival and lower the risk of recurrence. However, disease and treatment-related toxicities in cancer patients may result in fatigue and interfered quality of life (QoL). Previous studies have reported that cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is the most common symptom experienced by patients at all stage of diseases, it can occur during treatment, in advanced disease and in disease-free survivors; the prevalence of fatigue is reported to be between 59-96% in patients undergoing chemotherapy, 65-100% in patients receiving radiation therapy, and 30% in long term survivors. Also, CRF has been reported as the most frequent and distressing toxicity of colon and rectal chemotherapy. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) has published guidelines for the definition of CRF as ''a persistent subjective sense of physical, emotional, and/or cognitive tiredness or exhaustion related to cancer or cancer treatment that is not proportional to recent activity and that significantly interferes with usual functioning." Besides, CRF could dynamically change with the interactions among disease progression, treatment regimen, tumor site, nutrition, infection or other factors. Therefore, to minimize the impact of CRF on cancer patients, more in-depth researches on CRF are needed. The aim of this longitudinal study is to examine the dynamic changes, correlated factors and QoL of CRF among colorectal cancer patients during adjuvant chemotherapy. Furthermore, the results will supply physicians with more understanding about CRF, and help them to enhance the quality on cancer care to being perfected in the future.

supplementation with L-carnitine that is available both as an FDA-approved therapy for primary carnitine deficiency, as well as widely available as an over-the-counter ergogenic aid will improve wellbeing and function measured by questionnaires in patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). based on our review of literature that addition of health coaching (HC) to L-carnitine will yield greater gains.
