Filter by:Obesity results from complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors, and are strongly associated with metabolic complications such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. Obesity is defined as an excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health, a risk that is highly dependent upon the type of adipose tissue accumulation, whether visceral or sub-cutaneous, but also upon the characteristics of the fat tissue, especially inflammatory cells accumulation. Because of the well known sexual difference in fat accretion, this obesity-associated risk may also be very different for men and for women. In addition, recent data indicate that various factors such as the intestinal microbiota, but also the dietary intake of protective nutrients might be important determinants of the metabolic complications of obesity. Here we propose to: 1) study the metabolic adaptations and the mechanisms of adipose tissue accumulation during a period of controlled caloric over-nutrition, both in men and in women; 2) evaluate the potential protective effects of a supplementation with polyphenols on insulin resistance and other metabolic adaptations.
The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of detecting Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) in healthy subjects by using hyperpolarized xenon gas MRI. In this pilot study, MRI of BAT of healthy adult volunteers will be performed at 3 Tesla to assess image quality using a prototype surface coil and pulse sequence following inhalation of hyperpolarized 129Xe (xenon) gas at thermoneutrality and under mild cold condition. The investigators are testing the abilities of xenon MRI to see brown adipose tissue and detect its thermogenic activity.
This prospective randomized pilot study aims to evaluate the impact of aggressive life style modification in terms of calorie-controlled diet and supervised exercise on outcome of catheter ablation in overweight and obese patients with atrial fibrillation. Hypothesis: Weight loss and management by adoption of strict diet and exercise regimen improves the chances of freedom from recurrence following catheter ablation.
Evaluate the impact of a 12-week behavioral weight management program on body weight and quality of life. We hypothesize that participants will lose body weight and see improved quality of life after program completion.
In this study the investigators hypothesize that pathological alterations in adipose tissue biology already occur during the development and progression of obesity in children and adolescents. The investigators aim to identify and characterize mechanisms and molecular targets that affect the development of adipose tissue and ensuing obesity in childhood and adolescence.
Obesity is a growing problem worldwide and its prevention has become one of the leading priorities for the World Health Organisation. Obesity results from chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Although early prevention of obesity is preferable, surgical treatment is often required for severely obese people. Bariatric surgery has been shown to be the most effective therapy for severe obesity. Weight loss following bariatric surgery results in significant improvements in coexisting comorbidities, such as diabetes and hypertension but there is controversy whether bariatric surgery also improves aerobic capacity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of bariatric surgery on cardiopulmonary function and on daily physical activity. It is hypothesized that bariatric surgery will improve aerobic capacity and result in beneficial lifestyle changes from sedentary to more active.
The overall aim of the study is to investigate if patients with musculoskeletal chronic pain have reduced semen quality in comparison with age matched healthy controls. Secondly, the aim is to investigate whether overweight with or without chronic pain are related to reduced semen quality. We will investigate semen quality in obese chronic pain patients, normal weight chronic pain patients and in obese and normal weight healthy controls.
Background: Obesity-related diseases have a profound economic impact on health care systems. Laser acupuncture has been shown to have beneficial effects on obesity. However, to our knowledge, those trials were either non-randomized, non-blinded, or included low-calorie diet control. Investigators have therefore designed a patient-assessor-blinded, randomized, sham-controlled crossover trial to investigate the significance of laser acupuncture on obesity. Methods/design: One hundred and four subjects above 20 years of age with a body mass index (BMI) of over 25 kg/m2 will be divided into two groups: experimental and control. Each subject will receive the treatment relevant to their group three times a week for eight weeks. After eight weeks of treatment the subject will enter a two week washout period, after which the subjects will switch groups. Measurements will include BMI, body fat percentage, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist circumference, hip circumference, skinfold thickness, thigh circumference, body fat, blood pressure, heart rate, hunger, and the 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36). Discussion: The results of this pilot study will provide the basis for future large-scale multicenter trials investigating the effects of laser acupuncture on obesity.
This is a pilot project in which investigators will recruit obese (pre-pregnancy BMI of ≥ 35 kg/m2) women from the newly developed "My Clinic" at London Health Sciences Centre as well as normal obstetrical care at London Health Sciences Centre. Patients will be randomized to one of three treatment groups: 1) the full Nutrition and Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (NELIP), 2) Nutrition program only, or 3) Exercise program only. The investigators hypothesize that the evidence-based NELIP for obese pregnant women will be feasible to adopt in a clinical setting and will prevent excessive gestational weight gain, gestational diabetes and promote healthy infant growth patterns at the 6 and 12 month milestones. Outcomes may be improved in My Clinic over normal obstetrical care patients with interprofessional services.
Neuroimaging is becoming increasingly common to investigate the neural networks underlying eating behaviour and food preference in normal-weight and obese humans. It has been observed that obese in comparison to lean individuals display altered activation patterns in networks of brain areas involved in reward, emotion and cognitive control. Interestingly, obese individuals who are capable of losing weight appear to have a stronger connectivity between areas related to food value and to the control of eating behaviour. The same areas are also associated with healthy food choices. It has been suggested that activation in the prefrontal control areas indirectly modulate valuation-related activity. Based on this, brain-related intervention strategies to support weight loss and long-lasting weight maintenance are of particular interest. Hence, we first want to examine the effect on eating behaviour of neurofeedback training-induced up-regulation of functional connectivity between reward- and impulse-related brain areas as a pilot, and second we want to examine up-regulation of the activity of prefrontal control brain areas.
