Hypoxic Training in Obese Patients

By analyzing energetic and biomechanical basis of walking, and the subsequent changes induced by hypoxic vs normoxic training in obese individuals, it may optimize the use of walking in hypoxia to gain perspective for exercise prescription to set up training programs that aim to induce negative energy balance and to deal with weight management. However to the investigators knowledge, the analysis of changes in mechanics, energetics and efficiency of walking after continuous hypoxic training (CHT) has not been performed yet. The aims of the present study were: 1. Comparing the changes in body composition between continuous hypoxic training (CHT) and similar training in normoxia; e.g. continuous normoxic training (CNT) in obese subjects. 2. Comparing the metabolic and energetics adaptations to CHT vs CNT. 3. Finally, comparing the associated body‐loss induced gait modification since walking intensity at spontaneous walking speed (Ss) is lower in CHT than in CNT.

The primary goal of this study is to assess the accuracy of conventional fat fraction proton MRI for the detection of Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) in healthy subjects using 18F-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucosefluorodeoxyglucose -PET as gold standard. In this pilot study, MRI and PET imaging of BAT of healthy adult volunteers will be performed on a combined PET/MRI scanner under mild cold condition.

Obesity is epidemic in Australia, and current preventative strategies have had limited success in alleviating this health crisis. While numerous options are available for treatment of obesity, most do not result in sustained weight reduction. Obesity results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, therefore new methods that correct this imbalance are essential for effective long-term treatment. Rodent studies show that brown adipose tissue (BAT) can burn more energy than any other tissue in the body, therefore targeting BAT to increase its activity (energy burning rate) and quantity in humans is potentially a powerful tool for the treatment of obesity and related diseases. BAT has only recently been irrefutably identified in adult humans therefore little is known about how it functions in humans.
