Individual Variability of Appetite Responses to a Standardised Meal

The aim of this study is to examine the interindividual variability of subjective and hormonal appetite responses to a standardised meal in healthy men and explore any moderating influence of the fat mass and obesity associated gene (FTO). Participants homozygous for the obesity risk A allele (AA) or low risk T allele (TT) of FTO rs9939609 will complete two fasted control and two standardised meal (5025 kJ energy, 47% carbohydrate, 9% protein, 44% fat) conditions in randomised sequences. Ratings of perceived appetite and venous blood samples will be taken before and after the interventions. Interindividual differences in appetite responses and the potential moderating influence of the FTO gene will be examined using bivariate correlations and linear mixed modelling.

Balanced (Egg) Protein During Obesity Reduction: Differential Responses of Insulin Resistance by Race

The purpose of the trial is to assess the effects of combining regular, generous intakes of high quality protein (with substantial amounts provided from whole eggs and egg whites) with calorie restriction on insulin resistance and weight loss (along with function, body composition, racial disparities, and a number of secondary outcomes) in black and white older adults with prediabetes who are participating in a 4-month intervention. The investigators will compare these effects to the same outcomes with a control group consuming a traditional control regimen of calorie restriction over the same duration.

School-Based Program On Metabolic Disease

Mexico occupies the first place worldwide in childhood obesity. Its urban and indigenous communities present different levels of westernization which have triggered different epidemiological diseases. This study aims to treat and prevent obesity and related diseases. A school-based multi-component intervention program is developed in three ethnic groups with varying levels of westernization: Mestizos, Seris and Yaquis. Measurements are obtained to evaluate obesity, cardiovascular, diabetes risk, hepatic and renal function, and physical fitness. The intervention consists on Physical Activity (PA), Health Education (HE) and Nutrition (NP) programs carried out in six urban (Mestizo ethnic group) and indigenous schools (Seri and Yaqui ethnic groups). A total of 800 participants were part of the PA and HE programs (Education Arm), and 117 of them were also part of the NP program (Nutrition Arm). Measurement differences, after and before treatments are used to assess the intervention effect by age, sex, ethnicity, nutritional status, and treatments. Expanded access is not applicable to this study. The Government's Secretary of Education does not allow developing a plan to share individual data of participants.

Evaluation of Food Additive Contributions to Obesity - Feasibility Study 1

The effects of food additives on body weight in humans are largely unknown. This is a before-and-after feasibility study in 5 obese adults who will be followed for 5 months. Eligible participants will meet with the study team and will be taught how to limit the exposure to the studied food additives in their diet. Participants will also be asked to limit eating out to a maximum of 2 days per week. Primary outcomes in this study are recruitment rate, retention rate and adherence to the proposed dietary intervention.

BACKGROUND: Several reports have observed that the alteration of normal biological rhythms is associated with obesity development. In this regard, those subject with the preference for evening seems to be prone to develop obesity. However, the current treatment of obesity does not take into account these aspects OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether a diet adjusted to patient's chronotype is more effective than the current dietary recommendations. SUBJECTS/METHODS: 209 subjects take part in a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. 104 subjects followed a typical hypocaloric dietary treatment (CONTROL) and the other 105 subjects undergone a diet with a daily caloric distribution adjusted to their chronotype (CHRONO). CONCLUSIONS: A chronotype-adjusted diet may be a promising alternative to the classical hypocaloric dietary treatment since the investigator's data indicate a higher effectiveness regarding weight loss when the diet was adjusted to the patient's chronotype.

Acute Exercise Effects in Obese Pregnancy

Obesity before and during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk for a number of obstetric and metabolic complications in women and their offspring. Of particular importance, obese women have a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. In addition, obese women have larger offspring who have a higher risk for the development of obesity and diabetes; both largely attributed to higher maternal glycemia and glucose intolerance during pregnancy. Thus, identifying rehabilitative interventions that improve maternal and offspring metabolic and cardiovascular health in obese pregnancy are critical and have immediate and generational impact. Resistance and aerobic exercise training is a clinical staple for improving musculoskeletal, metabolic and cardiovascular health in non-gravid adolescents and adults with obesity however little is known regarding the effects of exercise during obese pregnancy. This study proposes to collect preliminary data on the independent effects of acute aerobic and resistance rehabilitative exercise on glucose metabolism and vascular function during pregnancy in n=15 obese women in order to inform a large, multisite clinical trial examining the acute and chronic effects of aerobic and resistance exercise on glucose metabolism and vascular function in normal weight, overweight and obese women during pregnancy.
