BNP Testing in Patients With SOB on Presentation to ED

A trial to examine whether a new heart failure blood test can improve the outcome of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with shortness of breath. We hypothesise that a BNP test performed in real-time in patients presenting to the Emergency Department with shortness of breath will help identify additional patients with CHF and consequently to change practice and allow more patients to recieve correct treatment earlier.

Skeletal Muscle Dysfunction in Heart Failure

Patients suffering from congestive heart failure report reduced exercise capacity. This skeletal muscle dysfunction is also detectable when using small muscle groups which should not put any demand on the heart. We hypothesize that congestive heart failure has systemic effects that causes the skeletal muscle dysfunction.

The Effect of Alfa-Adrenergic Receptor Blockade on Insulin-Stimulated Forearm Glucose Uptake and Metabolism in Chronic Heart Failure

The activity of the sympathetic nervous system seems to influence the uptake (and handling) of glucose by the skeletal muscle of the forearm. Conditions in which sympathetic activity is increased seem to inhibit/reduce forearm glucose uptake. Inversely a decrease in sympathetic activity seems to increase glucose uptake. This study analyzes the effect of alfa-adrenergic receptor blockade (counteracting sympathetic influence) on insulin-stimulated forearm glucose uptake in patients with increased sympathetic activity (patients with chronic heart failure).

Effect of Intravenous Ferrous Sucrose on Exercise Capacity in Chronic Heart Failure

This is a two-center, randomised, single-blind (physician), prospective, controlled study to assess the acute (8 weeks) and chronic (16 weeks) effects of intravenous (IV) iron sucrose supplementation in anaemic and non-anaemic iron deficient patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The hypotheses are: - Treatment of anaemic and non-anaemic iron-deficient CHF patients with IV iron sucrose improves exercise capacity as measured by peak VO2. - IV iron sucrose is safe and well tolerated in subjects with moderate to severe CHF.
