The Effects of Soy Protein on Post-thoracotomy Pain

This study seeks to determine whether soy protein supplements reduce the pain that often occurs following surgery for a lung tumor. Patients are randomized to receive either soy protein or milk protein prior to and following a thoracotomy for a lung tumor. We are especially interested in pain severity and pain medication use following surgery and will measure function and quality of life.

Intravenous (IV) Lidocaine for Opioid-refractory Pain

Opioid medicines, like morphine, are the main treatment for severe cancer pain. Unfortunately, some patients suffer severe pain despite high doses of opioids. We hypothesize that intravenous lidocaine can quickly and effectively treat this kind of opioid-refractory pain.

TRAUMEEL for Pain After Fracture of Neck of Femur

We hypothesize that Traumeel S is more effective than placebo in reducing 48-hour mean cumulative morphine consumption in patients scheduled for surgical correction of fracture of neck of hip. 224 patients, meeting all inclusion and none of exclusion criteria, will be enrolled in the trial. Patients will be randomized to receive either intraoperative injection and post operative oral Traumeel S Tablets or placebo injection (normal saline) and indistinguishable oral placebo tablets. Baseline measurements of relevant outcome measures will taken preoperatively. Immediately after surgery, patients will receive an initial dose of morphine of 0.1mg/kg body weight. Patients will take the oral study medication for 21 days. Every four hours after surgery, patients will be asked to grade their pain on an NRS. Subsequent doses of morphine will be calculated based upon the patient's weight and current NRS, according to a preplanned scheme. Patients will be permitted to request additional morphine, beyond their calculated dose.

S0308 Zoledronate or Ibandronate in Preventing Bone Problems in Women With Stage IV Breast Cancer That Has Spread to the Bone

RATIONALE: Zoledronate and ibandronate may prevent or help relieve bone pain and other symptoms caused by bone metastases. It is not yet known whether zoledronate is more effective than ibandronate in preventing bone problems caused by bone metastases due to breast cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying zoledronate to see how well it works compared to ibandronate in preventing bone problems in women with stage IV breast cancer that has spread to the bone.

RATIONALE: Celecoxib may help relieve moderate or severe pain associated with cancer. It may also decrease weight loss and improve muscle strength in cancer patients. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying celecoxib to see how well it works in managing pain, weight loss, and weakness in patients with advanced cancer.
