Effect of Celecoxib on Transitional Pain After Outpatient Surgery

Sixty adults having shoulder and forearm surgery will receive either placebo or celebrex started preoperatively and continued for 3 days. Rescue medications required as well as pain scores will be assessed using a patient diary to evaluate the effect of celebrex in controlling transitional pain

Acupuncture for Mucositis Pain in Cancer Care

This research is being done to see if acupuncture helps relieve mucositis pain in patients with leukemia who are undergoing chemotherapy. Many patients receiving chemotherapy develop mucositis (painful sores or blisters in the mouth or throat). Mucositis is not only a frequent complication in cancer care and extremely painful, but also increases the risks of infection and malnutrition and often leads to discontinuing or delaying the chemotherapy treatments.

A Study of Loading Doses of Intravenous Bondronat (Ibandronate) in Patients With Breast Cancer and Metastatic Bone Disease.

This single arm study will assess the efficacy of loading doses of intravenous Bondronat in reducing pain in patients with breast cancer and metastatic bone disease experiencing moderate to severe bone pain. Patients will receive an intravenous infusion of 6mg Bondronat on days 1, 2 and 3. The anticipated time on study treatment is <3 months, and the target sample size is <100 individuals.

Spinal Cord Stimulation Versus Nerve Blocks and Physical Therapy

The primary objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of SCS using the Precision implantable neurostimulation device and conventional medical treatment (nerve blocks + physical therapy) in subjects with recently-diagnosed Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) after some more conservative treatments have failed. There are significant numbers of patients with CRPS in whom conventional treatment is ineffective and SCS is used only as a last resort. If SCS is effective earlier in the treatment continuum, it would provide a much needed treatment alternative and increase awareness of the utility of SCS for this indication. It is also possible that early intervention with SCS may limit disease progression.

Topical Morphine for Analgesia in Patients With Skin Grafts

The management of pain endured by patients after skin grafting is complex. Pain is the single most distressing symptom but as it is difficult to manage, it is often under-treated. These patients may experience pain from two types of wound: the original injury and from "skin-donor" sites, areas of healthy skin from which skin is surgically removed and used to cover the original injury. As the section of skin which is removed is standardized, the wound created at the donor site is uniform and so provides a model of an acute wound. Opioids (such as morphine) are the backbone of treating the moderate to severe pain experienced by any patient. But due to their potentially severe side effects and that some patients do not experience sufficient relief from the treatment, optimal treatment schedules are still being sought after. Topically applied morphine has provided effective and safe analgesia in several clinical models. We, therefore, wish to apply this treatment modality onto skin-graft donor wounds. If found to be effective this could be an appealing non-invasive method to treat the pain of this type of wound.

All patients undergoing venepuncture or venous cannulation in pediatric emergency department will be treated with either Amethocaine, or Liposomal Lidocaine (4%) cream at the site of cannulation in order to determine the efficacy of these creams in controlling pain during procedures and to determine the success rate of these procedures.
