Filter by:The child will complete computerized tasks and paper-pencil test, and will be presented with symbols, letters, or numbers on a computer screen and asked to respond by pressing a button on the computer. Before each task a researcher will explain the instructions of the task and assess if the child needs a break before completing the next task. While the child is completing computerized tasks, the parent/guardian will be asked to fill out paper-pencil questionnaires about the child and to sign a release of medical information form so that we can study how physical markers of health effect cognition.
This is a prospective, randomized, open label, parallel, 16-week study to explore and evaluate the therapeutic effects of liraglutid, dapagliflozin and acarbose on the cognitive function, olfactory function, and odor-induced brain activation in overweight/obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) inadequately controlled with metformin monotherapy.
Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and their associated complications like amputations are increasingly becoming a problem in low and middle income (LMI) countries. Obesity (increased body fat/adiposity), which has been shown to complicate many diseases, is also increasing in LMI setting. It is however not certain whether increased adiposity, may make it difficult for DFUs to heal. Investigators aim to understand whether increased adiposity and accompanied local microbial factors have any negative impact on healing and progression of DFUs.
Obesity among children is a major problem. Therefore, it is important to start promoting a healthy lifestyle in an early stage. However, professionals find it difficult to start a conversation about overweight and lifestyle. Within Centre for Overweight Adolescent and Children's Healthcare (COACH) at the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+) a tool was developed, based on motivational interviewing, to help professionals engage in conversation with the children about weight and lifestyle. The aim of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators perceived by professionals, working with children, to start a conversation with a child with overweight or obesity about weight and lifestyle. In addition, this study researches the effects of the developed COACH Conversationstarter, a tool that can help healthcare professionals to start a conversation with children about overweight and lifestyle and to gain more insight in the views, thoughts and beliefs of the child and its family.
Once written consent is obtained, the participant will be provided with an accelerometer to be worn for 7 days to assess current physical activity levels. Subjects will be provided with a standardized diet (55/15/30% CHO/PRO/FAT) prior to collection of pre-intervention data of insulin sensitivity. Individuals will then participate in an 8-week electrical stimulation intervention (30min/day, 3x/week) and randomized into placebo/control, NMES, resistance training combined with NMES (RT +NMES), or resistance training (RT) group (n=15 per group), followed by collection of post-intervention data. The control group will receive electrical stimulation up to sensory level, the NMES group will receive stimulation up to tolerable intensity to induce visible muscle contraction, the RT+ NMES will receive stimulation up to tolerable intensity during resistance training, and the RT group will only receive exercise training. Pre-and post-intervention data includes measurements for body composition, resting metabolic rate, VO2max, insulin sensitivity, and comprehensive blood work.

To assess the safety and effectiveness of the LGV in treating obese subjects with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 to 55 kg/m2 who have failed one or more conservative weight-reduction alternative(s), such as supervised diet, exercise, and behavior modification program(s).
Cow's milk is a dietary staple for children in North America. Though clinical guidelines suggest children transition from whole (3.25% fat) milk to reduced (1%) fat milk at age 2 years, recent epidemiological evidence supports a link between whole milk consumption and lower adiposity in children. The purpose of this trial is to determine which milk fat recommendation minimizes excess adiposity and optimizes child nutrition and development. CoMFORT will be a parallel group randomized controlled trial among children aged 2 to 4 years participating in the TARGet Kids! practice-based research network. Children will be randomized to receive one of two usual care nutritional recommendations: 1) a recommendation to consume whole milk, or 2) a recommendation to consume reduced (1%) fat milk. The primary outcome is Body Mass Index z-score (zBMI); secondary outcomes will be cognitive development (using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire), vitamin D stores (serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D), cardiometabolic health (glucose, hsCRP, non-HDL, LDL, triglyceride, HDL and total cholesterol, insulin, and diastolic and systolic blood pressure) and sugar sweetened beverage intake (measured by 24-hour dietary recall). Outcomes will be measured 24 months post-randomization and compared using ANCOVA, adjusting for baseline measures. This trial will contribute to nutrition policy for children in effort to reduce childhood obesity using a simple, inexpensive and scalable cow's milk fat intervention.
This study is designed to investigate whether the sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor Empagliflozin reduces sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in humans.
Obesity, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and gene-specific dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are common medical conditions. Small-scale studies have shown that these are associated with proarrhythmic changes on 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and a higher risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, these studies lack the deep electrophysiological phenotyping required to explain their observations. Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGi) is a non-invasive alternative to 12-lead ECG, by which epicardial potentials, electrograms and activation sequences can be recorded to study adverse electrophysiological modelling in greater depth and on a more focussed, subject-specific scale. Therefore, this study proposes to better define the risk of arrhythmia and understand the underlying adverse electrophysiological remodelling conferring this risk in three groups (obesity, RA and DCM). Firstly, data from two large, national repositories will be analysed to identify associations between routine clinical biomarkers and proarrhythmic 12-lead ECG parameters, to confirm adverse electrophysiological remodelling and a higher risk of arrhythmia. Secondly,ECGi will be performed before and after planned clinical intervention in obese and RA patients, and at baseline in titin-truncating variant (TTNtv)-positive and -negative DCM patients, to characterise the specific and potentially reversible conduction and repolarisation abnormalities that may underlie increased arrhythmic risk.
