Diet and COVID-19 Vaccination

Recently, obesity and excess visceral fat were shown to be major risk factors for the development of complications following Covid 19 infection. Recently, KDs have been suggested as possible weapons to tame the cytokine storm being described in those developing complications upon COVID-19 infection, and preclinical evidence strongly supports the hypothesis, with mouse models of COVID-19 infection in the elderly reporting strikingly better outcomes upon consumption of a KD. Short-term interventions that use low-calorie ketogenic diets may be prescribed for selected overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes. No data is available on the impact of a ketogenic diet on immune modulation following vaccination. We herein aim at investigating whether obesity and unhealthy body composition are associated with poor seroconversion following the upcoming COVID-19 vaccine administration, and whether consumption of a KD before and between COVID-19 vaccine doses leads to better immune response in obese subjects. 24 obese patients will be assigned to follow a LCKD regimen for 5 weeks.

There is a strong link between obesity and reduced quality of life as well as serious sequelae of diseases. Step by step is a treatment model that has been developed at the Obesity Unit, Orebro County Region and includes six group meetings over 6-8 months. The aim is to increase patients' knowledge about the disease obesity, to provide support for lifestyle changes and weight control, and to reduce stigma-related psychosocial disorders. A 1-year pilot study aimed at evaluating the Internet-based Step by Step treatment has recently been completed. Results after 6 months of treatment show that the participants who completed the treatment were mainly satisfied with the program and the content. However, the dropouts from the treatment were more than expected.

Motivational Wellness Coaching to Reduce Childhood Obesity in Families and Kids

Primary care settings lack interventions to address the childhood obesity epidemic that are feasible and sustainable without requiring significant resources. The investigators propose to modify and test an intervention shown to lower children's body mass index(BMI) so that it is feasible, sustainable, and easily disseminated in a real-world clinical setting. If successful, the investigators will be able to provide recommendations to providers and health care systems that help prioritize future intervention strategies and research investments to reduce obesity in children that can be quickly translated into other settings and widely adopted after the study period, with the goal of halting and reversing the childhood obesity epidemic.

Study on outcomes on bariatric surgery, particularly in terms of metabolic parameters in the UAE is scant. Also Genetic data from this population is limited and hence a study on genetic determinants of response to bariatric surgery is highly warranted. This study is expected to provide a better understanding of the causes of severe obesity in the UAE population and help us to evaluate the efficacy of Bariatric surgery in patients with genetic forms of obesity. The information generated will allow us to better advise patients regarding the risks and benefits of Bariatric Surgery as a treatment. Objective To investigate the metabolic outcomes of bariatric surgery, to study the prevalence of monogenic forms of obesity among a cohort of patients with morbid obesity who underwent bariatric surgery and to compare the outcomes of Bariatric surgery in patients with and without underlying genetic condition.

Fruit and Vegetable Products Enriched With Fibre From Potato Starch With Prebiotic Properties for Children and Youth

The main goal of the project is to test fruit and vegetable mousse, with the addition of a fiber preparation made of potato starch with prebiotic properties, on selected clinical, metabolic and immunological parameters in overweight and obese children. The study will be performed in a group of 80 to 100 children aged 6 to 10 years (pre-pubertal age), using a double-blind procedure. Children will be randomly assigned into two groups, i.e. the intervention group (they will receive a vegetable and fruit mousse with the addition of potato starch fiber preparation with prebiotic properties) and the control group (they will receive an identical preparation in their diet, but without the addition of potato starch fiber preparation).

Healthy vs Unhealthy Obesity: Mehanistic Insights and Effects of Time-Restricted Eating

Obesity-related cardiometabolic diseases are now a leading cause of death worldwide. These diseases result from a dysfunctional adipose tissue (AT) that induces inflammation, insulin resistance and altered endocrine function. However, not all obese people develop metabolic complications, which has given rise to the concept of "metabolically healthy obesity" (MHO). Recent evidence suggests that intermittent fasting methods, in particular time-restricted eating (TRE) may be effective in improving cardiometabolic health, independently of weight loss, and this could be particularly effective in MUO subjects. The investigators hypothesize that in young male adults TRE is a more effective/beneficial approach in MUO than in MHO due to the weight loss-independent improvement in their inflammatory and metabolic derangements. To this aim, a 16-week 8h TRE intervention study will be performed in MHO and MUO subjects, assessing anthropometric, endocrine, and other outcomes.
