Intestinal flora or microbiota is the group of bacteria that live in the intestine, in a symbiotic relationship with the human body. It is estimated that human beings have around 2,000 different bacteria species. The gut microbiota plays a key in many of the body's functions. Hence, the analysis of the gut microbiome provides insight into the state of the microbiota as an indicator of overall health due to its metabolic, protective and nutritional functions. A balanced diet promotes the formation and maintenance of a well-structured microbiota, in which the different species of microorganisms cohabit in a balanced and controlled system. The study is based on the hypothesis that the intake of certain plant-based foods rich in various active ingredients (especially non-digestible carbohydrates, certain types of fats and polyphenols) can modulate the microbiota and thus improve the health status of the human population. Taking into account this background, the objective of this study is to assess the effect of the inclusion of functional foods and ingredients within a balanced diet on the composition of the microbiota and also on health parameters associated with metabolic disease.

Human Milk Oligossaccharide and Acetate Production in Vivo

The study investigators hypothesize (1) that the SCFA/acetate metabolism differs between metabolic phenotypes and (2) that using a mixture of fibres that differ in degree of polymerization and branching namely a resistant starch and a human-like milk oligosaccharide enhance the acetate availability in the distal colon and systemic circulation, consequently leading to its metabolic effects. To study this, the investigators will supplement lean, normoglycaemic vs. overweight/obese, prediabetic men with the fibre mixture the day before the clinical investigation day (CID) and study during the CID its effects on fasting and postprandial substrate and energy metabolism.

Research Study to Investigate How Well Semaglutide Works in People Living With Heart Failure and Obesity

This study will look at how the participants daily life is affected by their heart failure. The study will also look at the change in participants body weight from the start to the end of the study. This is to compare the effect on heart failure symptoms and on body weight in people taking semaglutide (a new medicine) to people taking "dummy" medicine. Participants will either get semaglutide or "dummy" medicine - which treatment participants get is decided by chance. Participants will need to take 1 injection once a week. The study medicine is injected with a thin needle in a skin fold in the stomach area, thigh or upper arm. During the study participants will have talks with the study staff about healthy lifestyle choices including healthy food and physical activity. The study will last for approximately 59 weeks. Participants will have 11 clinic visits and 1 phone call with the study doctor. Women: Women cannot take part if they are pregnant, breast-feeding or plan to become pregnant during the study period.
