The primary objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of Rimonabant (SR141716) compared to placebo on change in HbA1c and on relative change in body weight over 36 weeks in obese type 2 diabetic patients inadequately controlled with diet and exercise alone. The secondary objectives are: - To evaluate the effect of Rimonabant compared to placebo on other parameters related to the glucose control, waist circumference, Body Mass Index and metabolic parameters; - To evaluate the safety and tolerability of Rimonabant compared to placebo; - To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of Rimonabant.
The primary objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of SR141716 (rimonabant) compared to placebo on change in HbA1c and on relative change in body weight over 52 weeks in obese type 2 diabetic patients on monotherapy inadequately controlled with oral anti-diabetic drug (sulfonylurea or α-glucosidase inhibitor). The secondary objectives are: - To evaluate the effect of SR141716 compared to placebo on other parameters related to the glucose control, waist circumference, Body Mass Index and metabolic parameters - To evaluate the safety and tolerability of SR141716 compared to placebo - To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of SR141716
People with psoriasis have significantly higher rates of obesity, diabetes, heart failure and high blood pressure than the general public. The purpose of this study is to determine how substances produced in the fat (inflammatory markers) relate to the risk of heart disease in people with the metabolic syndrome and psoriasis. People with metabolic syndrome have insulin resistance, increased waist size, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.
Primary objective: - To assess the effect on microalbuminuria levels of treatment with rimonabant 20 mg versus a placebo during a 12 month period. Secondary objectives: - Percentage of patients in both arms of the study whose levels of microalbuminuria decrease, stabilise, increase towards macroalbuminuria or are unchanged after 12 months of treatment with rimonabant or placebo. - To assess the effect of treatment with rimonabant 20 mg versus placebo over a 12 month period on: - Weight and waist circumference. - Glycaemia profile: fasting glycaemia, fasting insulinaemia and HbA1c. - Lipid and lipoprotein profile: triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, apolipoproteins A1 and B. - Inflammatory markers - Adipocytokines. - Blood pressure. - Glomerular filtration rate. - To assess the quality of life by means of questionnaire filled in. - Safety parameters
Children with an excess in body weight, increase the risk of obesity-related co-morbidities and cardiovascular diseases. Childhood obesity may be due to diets laden with fat and lack of physical activity. Omega-3 fish oil is a supplementation that may promote a greater reduction of pro-inflammatory mediators; combined with exercise and nutritional regimens it may also help improve glycemic, lipid markers, and body composition in overweight children and adolescents.
Obesity is associated with an increase in blood levels of estrogen. Estrogen or "female hormone" is believed to have a negative effect on sperm production. Aromatase inhibitors such as anastrozole work to decrease the production of estrogen and increase testosterone in the body. By decreasing the level of estrogen, sperm production should improve. In this study, the investigators will try to determine the benefit of anastrozole in obese men with low sperm counts. Patients participating in this study will be randomly assigned (by chance) to treatment in one of two study arms: Group A: Anastrozole 1mg per day for 4 months and Group B: Placebo for 4 months. Neither patients nor doctors will know in which treatment group they are. Screening assessments will take place prior to the start of treatment. During this time, demographic data and medical history will be reviewed and recorded. Also, testicular exam, sperm count and laboratory blood analysis will be performed. Over the course of study, semen and blood analysis including hormonal profile (testosterone, estrogen, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone) will be recollected. At the conclusion of the trial, the investigators expect the group that received anastrozole to have an improved sperm count, increased testosterone and decreased estrogen levels.
The primary objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of SR141716 compared to placebo on body weight and triglycerides changes over a period of 52 weeks. Secondary objectives are: - To evaluate the effect of SR141716 compared to placebo over a period of 52 weeks, on HDL-cholesterol and visceral fat area. - To evaluate the safety of SR141716 compared to placebo over a period of 104 weeks. - To evaluate the pharmacokinetics of SR141716.
Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE) is a trans-community multidisciplinary site-specific intervention and evaluation plan for a Head Start and family-based culturally and developmentally appropriate intervention. The primary goals are to increase physical activity and improve dietary intake through increased consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grain and decrease consumption of sweetened drinks and high-fat foods,decrease television and other screen time, and decrease obesity in three to five year old Hispanic and American Indian children enrolled in Head Start programs in rural New Mexico. The trans-community intervention includes: A classroom curriculum for children; an in-service training program for Head Start teachers and educational aides; a school food service component; a family intervention; a community leader/local health care provider component; and a grocery store component. Participants include 16 Head Start programs serving Hispanic and Native American children and families from underserved communities in rural New Mexico. This is a randomized trial with an Intervention Condition and Control Condition. One cohort of three-year old Head Start students will be followed and measured for two years. During the two years in Head Start those children, their teachers, and families enrolled in the Intervention Condition will receive a program of activities to modify their dietary, physical activity, and screen viewing behaviors. Also addressed are the Head Start and community environments and policies, local grocery stores, and health care providers. CHILE uses an ecological framework including social cognitive theory, intervention mapping, environmental and policy changes, developmental theory, and sound educational practices. The approach includes in from the community to ensure acceptability, cultural appropriateness, feasibility, sustainability, and later transferability to similar communities. The primary outcome measures include changes in physical activity levels, dietary fiber intake, dietary fat intake, intake of sugared drinks, television viewing and other screen time, in BMI. Secondary measures include changes in the Head Start and community environments and policies related to physical activity, school food service, school snacks, and availability of healthful options. We will also examine the role of community leaders, especially health care providers, in raising awareness and creating a supportive and sustainable environment for the prevention of obesity.
