Weight Loss for Obese Individuals With Gout

This study evaluates effect of weight loss in a group of obese patients with gouty arthritis. The study is a randomised group trial where half the patients receive intensive weight loss in the form of meal replacement from Cambridge as well as supervision from a clinical dietician and the other half get usual care.

Prepare - How to Reach Women of Reproductive Age With Obesity to Support Weight Loss Before Pregnancy?

Researchers at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital are conducting a study to learn more about how best to reach out to women (age 18-45) who are thinking about a pregnancy in the next couple of years and currently have a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2. Interested participants will be asked to complete a 15-minute survey. The survey will ask some more questions about their prior reproductive health history, opinions and experiences regarding lifestyle, weight and health. After completing the survey, researchers would like to arrange a time to complete a 20- to 30-minute semi-structured interview about their perceived health in the process of planning pregnancy.

ObeSity Related Colorectal Adenoma Risk

In the UK, around 1 in 16 men and 1 in 20 women will develop bowel cancer at some point in their lives. Most bowel cancers happen when a type of growth in the bowel called an adenoma eventually becomes cancerous. Cutting out adenomas reduces the risk of developing bowel cancer. Certain people are more likely to have adenomas than others, for example people who are overweight. People who are overweight are also more likely to develop liver disease by laying too much fat down in the liver. Studies in Asia have shown that people with fatty liver disease are more likely to have adenomas and these are more commonly found in the part of the bowel (right colon) furthest from the bottom end. Information on the link between obesity, fatty liver disease and adenomas is very limited, particularly in the Western population. The investigators will assess the link between body weight, fatty liver and adenomas in the UK population. 1430 patients will be invited; some through the bowel cancer screening programme and some with symptoms such as low blood count, bleeding or changed bowel habit. These patients will already have been referred for a camera test looking into the bowel, called a colonoscopy. Information including height, weight and some health questions will be taken. Blood samples will be taken. The investigators will compare the number of patients with adenomas who have liver disease or who are overweight with those who don't. This information will be used to develop a scoring system to predict risk of adenomas. This will help the investigators to decide if undertaking colonoscopies in these patients will identify those at increased risk of bowel cancer.

Research Study of a New Medicine (NNC9204-1706) in People With Overweight or Obesity

The study is testing a new medicine for weight control in people with overweight or obesity. The aim of the study is to find out how safe the study medicine is and how it works in the body. Participants will either get NNC9204-1706 (the new study medicine) or placebo (a dummy medicine) - which treatment participants get is decided by chance. NNC9204-1706 is a new medicine which cannot be prescribed by doctors. Participants will get an injection under the skin of participants' stomach each morning for 10 weeks. A medical tool called NovoPen®4 will be used for the injection. Participants must change the part of the pen including the medicine (the cartridge) each day. The study will last for about 16 weeks. Participants will have at least 17 clinic visits and 10 phone calls with the study doctor. At certain times during the study, participants will have blood drawn and 3 different kinds of heart tests (electrocardiograms). Study doctor will ask participants to answer mental health surveys.

Bikes For Life: Measuring the Effects of a Bicycle Distribution Program on Pediatric Obesity

The investigators propose a study to evaluate the success of a bicycle distribution program in increasing physical activity level, decreasing sedentary activity levels and positively affecting body-mass index (BMI) in participants aged 6 to 12 years old with overweight or obesity, who do not already own a bicycle, and are patients at the Children's Hospital Colorado Child Health Clinic (CHC), Lifestyle Medicine Clinic, or Rocky Mountain Youth Clinics. The investigators anticipate that the receipt of a bicycle will increase physical activity level, decrease sedentary activity time and decrease or stabilize patients' BMI. The investigators will answer this research question by distributing bicycles to 525 children and conducting follow up visits over the course of a year to measure the outcomes of interest.

Effect of Consuming "Home Meals" on Body Weight

The current epidemic of obesity relates to the transition from traditional to industrialised diets. The present project investigates the effect on body energy of recommending the consumption of traditional "home meals", which may be a useful recommendation against obesity. A randomized controlled trial design is applied assigning participants to a recommendation of consuming during 12 weeks either "home meals" or "healthy meals." Frequency of consumption of energy-dense foods and of exercise is monitored throughout the intervention; weight and body fat are measured at baseline and at four-week intervals. The hypothesis is that consuming more frequently "home meals" reduces at least as much weight and adiposity as "healthy meals".
