The Effect of Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on Cardiometabolic Health

Obesity- related diseases are linked to elevated levels of inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring compound that demonstrates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Improvements in measures of metabolic health have been observed in mouse models of obesity and type 2 diabetes following MSM treatment. However, the effect of MSM on obesity-related risk factors for disease in humans has not been investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation will be to determine whether MSM supplementation improves metabolic health, and markers of inflammation and oxidative status.

Impacts of Resistance Training on Acute Secretion of Irisin in Obese Older and Young Adults

It is established that resistance training improves metabolic health; however, the mechanisms of this process are not fully understood. A biologically active substance, irisin, has recently received interest in the scientific community with respect to its effects on energy expenditure and weight loss. The purpose of this study is to compare the different irisin release response during a resistance exercise training session. The study will compare individuals two different age groups (young adults: age 18-30; older adults: age 65-75) living with obesity.

Beta Glucan and Acetate Production

Based on our hypothesis that orally administered resistant starch and beta glucan will be fermented into a SCFA pattern high in acetate and that this will lead to beneficial effects on human substrate and energy metabolism, we aim to address the following primary objective: To investigate the effects of an acute administration of inulin/beta glucan in combination with resistant starch on fecal and plasma acetate, as well as on fasting and postprandial substrate and energy metabolism in lean normoglycemic men and obese, prediabetic men.

Telenutrition in Spinal Cord Injury

The purpose of the study is to provide tele-nutrition counseling after a spinal cord injury (SCI). During the three months of participation, subjects will be given an iPad and the iPad will be used to record meals using a photo journal application, YouAte. In addition, subjects will receive dietary advice two times a month with a registered dietitian (RD). The dietitian role in the study will be to educate healthy weight management and accommodate any cultural and behavioral habits. The objective of this study is to show that the proposed tele-nutrition program will be effective with weight management through 3-month tele-nutrition counseling via iPad FaceTime. The hypotheses are 1) that weight and waist circumference will not increase after 3 months of tele-nutrition program, 2) quality of life will improve, and 3) quality of diet will improve.

Impact of High-fat Meals Varying in Fatty Acid Composition on Adipose and Systemic Metabolic-inflammatory Responses

Cardiometabolic disorders are a leading cause of death worldwide. Replacing saturated fatty acids (SFA) with unsaturated fatty acids is recommended as a way of lowering cardiometabolic disease risk. Consuming a diet rich in SFA may lead to a greater metabolic-inflammatory response in white adipose tissue during the fasting state, when compared to eating a diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). Since individuals spend most of the day in the fed (or postprandial) state, it is important to see how different types of dietary fatty acids affect postprandial white adipose tissue and systemic metabolic-inflammatory responses. This study will investigate the effect of a SFA-rich meal on markers of white adipose tissue and systemic metabolic-inflammation, compared to a MUFA-rich meal in overweight adults. In a randomised, single blind controlled, cross-over manner participants will consume either a SFA- or MUFA-rich meal and sequential blood and white adipose tissue samples will be collected before and until 6 hours postprandially.

Maintaining well-controlled blood glucose concentrations is essential in the prevention of chronic cardiometabolic diseases. The blood glucose response to dietary and/or lifestyle patterns may vary between individuals. Insulin resistance in specific metabolic organs such as skeletal muscle, adipose tissue or the liver may underlie differential blood glucose responses. This dietary intervention study aims to obtain insight into the metabolic and lifestyle determinants of postprandial blood glucose responses, and to establish the effect of macronutrient manipulation of a 12-week dietary intervention on blood glucose homeostasis in metabolically different subgroups an its relationship to physical and mental performance and well-being.
