Filter by:The purpose of this pilot study is to examine the effects of different types of just-in-time intervention messages on daily meeting dietary, activity, and weighing goals in a sample of young adults participating in a mobile-based weight loss program.
Diabetes is a major health concern in obese older Veterans, especially in those who are African American. The negative impact of diabetes on muscle and physical function contributes to metabolic as well as physical decline and is under-studied. This randomized controlled trial compares a higher-protein, weight loss regimen previously shown to improve physical function to an Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) protein intervention in obese older male Veterans with pre-diabetes and functional limitations. Equal numbers of white and black male Veterans will be studied, filling gaps in the investigators' knowledge of differential responses by race as well as obesity interventions for men in general. The primary outcome is functional performance by Short Physical Performance Battery and secondary measures include muscle quality, insulin sensitivity, lean body mass, physical activity, recent falls and fear of falling, instrumental activities of daily living, and quality of life measured at 0, 3 and 6 months. The goal of this research is to accelerate functional recovery and enhance independence in obese male Veterans, which is strongly aligned with the RR&D mission to "maximize the physical and social autonomy of Veterans".

Compare the Effect of Different Physical Programs on the Body Composition of Adult Women and Men With a Total Body Fat Percentage ≥ 30 % at the Beginning of the Test or BMI ≥25
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of high protein (HP) vs. normal protein (NP) diets on weight loss, loss of fat free mass (FFM), and remission of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in individuals with T2D. Both diet groups will receive dietary and physical activity guidance through a group-based weight loss program, State of Slim (SOS). The central hypothesis is that the HP diet (with ≥4 weekly servings of lean beef) will lead to greater remission of T2D vs. a NP diet by 1) producing greater weight loss and limiting weight regain and 2) preferentially reducing fat mass while preserving FFM.
This study is for physically inactive adults. Participants will be enrolled in the Positive Psychology and Physical Activity intervention designed to help them overcome barriers to physical activity, based on the principals of positive psychology. This will involve six weekly one-hour group-based sessions at a local YMCA with a trained group leader. In addition to the in-person sessions, there will be text messages sent to participants about physical activity that include positive psychology content.
This study aims to test two strategies for weight loss maintenance. It involves two phases, a weight loss phase and a maintenance phase. During Phase I (the weight loss phase), participants will receive a 16-week, Web-based behavioral weight loss program that involves access to weekly weight loss information and weekly personalized feedback on diet, activity, and weight loss goals. Individuals who lose at least 5% of their initial body weight during this program, will be invited to participate in Phase II. During Phase II, two 4-month treatments for weight loss maintenance will be tested. At the beginning of Phase II, participants will be randomly assigned to one of the two maintenance programs: (1) a behavioral maintenance program that involves in-person group meetings plus daily exercises in which information about a healthy lifestyle is reviewed or (2) a behavioral maintenance program that involves in-person group meetings plus daily exercises in which descriptions of positive future events are reviewed. Throughout the study, participants will complete assessments that examine the effects of the interventions on delay discounting, physical activity, weight, and other important health and psychosocial outcomes.

Introduction: Obesity is a major public health problem and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, while effective, is challenging in real-world settings. Culinary coaching is a behavioral intervention that aims to improve nutrition and overall health by facilitating home cooking through an active learning process that combines culinary training and health coaching. Our goal is to evaluate whether a culinary coaching telemedicine program (twelve 30-minute sessions) will significantly improve outcomes among subjects with overweight or obesity. General hypothesis: A culinary coaching telemedicine program will result in significant weight loss, and improvement in culinary attitude and self-efficacy, nutritional intake, and metabolic outcomes. Methods: This is a two-site, 36-month randomized controlled trial in which study participants between the ages of 25 to 70, with 27.5 ≤ BMI ≤ 35 Kg/m2 will be randomly assigned to nutritional counseling combined with a structured culinary coaching program or to nutritional counseling group (18 intervention, 18 control at each site). Intervention will include a 3-month culinary coaching telemedicine program with outcome data collected periodically for 12 months. The pre-defined primary outcome is body weight loss at 6 months, and secondary outcomes include change in body weight and composition at 1 year, as well as culinary attitudes and self-efficacy through a validated questionnaire, nutritional intake, lipid profile, blood pressure, and HgA1c (glycated hemoglobin); and participants' perception of the program. Potential impact: The investigators believe that this program has a potential to be a viable tool in promoting effective and scalable home cooking interventions aimed at improved nutrition and health outcomes in overweight and obesity.
The study aims to test the Mindful Construal Diary (MCD- a mindful eating intervention) initially developed by Mantzios and Wilson. The diary aims to facilitate weight-loss, while also promoting a present centred awareness to current food consumption. There has yet to be any research testing the MCD in clinical populations.
