The aim of this study is to investigate the movement of the right hemidiaphragm when lifting a load with the left and right hand.
HMB supplementation has been shown to have potential to optimize resistance training responses, which may have important implications for sport, exercise, and health. However, HMB literature shows uncertainties as to which is the superior pharmaceutical form of supplemental HMB (i.e., the calcium salt or the free acid form) in terms of pharmacokinetic profile and bioavailability when consumed by humans. This research project investigated the bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of two different forms of supplemental HMB, namely HMB calcium-salt (HMB-Ca) and HMB Free Acid (HMB-FA). Further, HMB-Ca was provided both diluted in water and encapsulated in gelatine capsules. This pharmacokinetics study adopted a crossover design, open-label design in which male and female participants visited the laboratory on 3 different occasions to receive one the 3 treatments: 1g of HMB; the equivalent of 1g of HMB-Ca in water; the equivalent of 1g of HMB-Ca in gelatine capsules. Venous blood samples were collected before and multiple time points after treatment ingestion, for a period of 12 hours in total. A pre-ingestion midstream urine sample was collected as well as a 24-h post-ingestion total urine sample. All plasma and urine samples were analysed for their HMB concentrations via LC/MS. Time to peak, maximum concentration, area under the curve, half-life time and slope of the incremental phase were calculated to examine the pharmacokinetic profile of HMB and compare the 3 different pharmaceutical forms.
A subset of young adults participating in the American Lung Association (ALA) Lung Health Cohort (LHC) will be imaged using Hyperpolarized 129Xe MRI to assess lung structure and function. Images will be used to improve the understanding of lung health and early lung abnormalities that may lead to chronic lung disease.

The present neuroimaging study investigates cerebral and behavioral markers of spatialization. Spatialization in memory corresponds to a mental representation of successive items from left to right in Westerners. A simple task to detect spatialization consists in presenting a series of stimuli sequentially. All stimuli are centered on the screen, so there is no spatial information during the task. After the presentation of the sequence, there is a recognition phase in which the participant is requested to take a decision as to whether a memory probe belongs to the sequence maintained in memory. The decision is made by pressing a key with the left or the right hand, depending on the instruction. The main measure is the difference in response times between the two hands. The standard spatialization effect in working memory in Westerners is that left-key responses are faster when retrieving the first items of the sequence whereas later items elicit faster right-key responses. To date, the factors that can influence this spatialization process in working memory as well as the brain structures involved remain largely unknown. Participants need to complete three experimental conditions associated with fMRI recording of brain activity. In task A (Visual Spatial), participants will see the sequences presented from left to right; in task B (Visual No Spatial), participants will see sequences of items presented in the middle of the screen; and in task C (Auditory), the sequences will be presented in an auditory format. When comparing tasks, A and B, we will be able to investigate if seeing information from left to right (spatialization is provided through the spatial coordinates of the items) is comparable to spatializing information from left to right (spatialization is not provided, all items have the same spatial coordinates). The comparison between task B and C will allow us to investigate the effect of seeing items (spatialization is not provided, all items have the same spatial coordinates) versus hearing them (spatialization is not provided and items have no spatial coordinates).
The purpose of this research is to study the efficacy of ultrasound microvessel imaging for evaluation of Chronic Kidney Disease. Definity is an ultrasound contrast agent currently approved by the FDA for use on the heart, liver, and urinary tract. This study will look at its effectiveness on the kidney.

After recruiting a population of subjects with different metabolic severity (subjects of normal weight and obese patients with and without metabolic syndrome), the objectives of the present research will be: 1. determine leukocyte mRNA levels of Cidea (gene associated with BAT functional status), Hoxc9 (gene associated with browning of WAT) and Cpt1a (gene associated with β-oxidation of fatty acids in both tissues, i.e. BAT and WAT) (secondary endpoint); 2. to determine energy expenditure with indirect calorimetric technique, body temperature and circulating catecholamine levels, which will be correlated to leukocyte levels of Cidea, Hoxc9 and Cpt1a mRNA (secondary endpoint); 3. determine the plasma levels of an extensive panel of sphingolipids, including in particular ceramides and sphingosine-1-phosphate which, by exerting a lipotoxic, lipoinflammatory and anti-adipogenic effect, will be correlated to the leukocyte levels of Cidea, Hoxc9 mRNA and Cpt1a (primary endpoint); 4. determine the erythrocyte, leukocyte and platelet levels of sphingolipids which, acting as peripheral biomarkers of cardiometabolic dysfunction (e.g., atherogenesis, thromboembolism, arterial hypertension, insulin resistance, low-grade chronic inflammation, etc.), could phenotypically identify patients with increased cardiovascular risk (e.g., obese patients with or without metabolic syndrome) (secondary endpoint). Hypothesis: the existence of a relationship between sphingohypotoxicity and transdifferentiation of adipose tissue and a combination of sphingolipids (plasma/erythrocyte/platelet/leukocyte) and gene regulators (WAT/BAT-related) which, with sensitivity and specificity, is associated with diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
The purpose of this investigation is to examine the effects of consuming a new dietary microalgae based supplement vs. placebo on neuromuscular function, energy utilization, soreness, perceptual wellness, swelling, and markers of muscle damage and inflammation in healthy young men before and after an acute exercise-induced muscle damage protocol (downhill running), and influence on endurance capacity after prolonged consumption.
