Filter by:The overall goal of this project is to understand how a mother's health at conception may influence her child's growth and development.
Purpose of the present research project is to study a new in-vivo test for abnormal platelet function and to study the effect of certain drugs on clinical bleeding. This is a randomized clinical trial of a new in-vivo test of platelet function known as the bleeding volume test(BVT)which relies on an on-line measurement system. This trial will assess the sensitivity and specificity of the new BVT by studying the effects of aspirin which is known to affect platelet function in-vivo. This is not a clinical trial of drugs. This is a clinical trial of a novel in-vivo on-line laboratory test. The BVT measures the total volume of blood in the discrete blotches of blood on the blotter paper during the BT test and thus the BVT gleans valuable additional information from the bleeding time test (BTT)procedure. We hypothesize that the BV test will be a more accurate, specific and sensitive test for diagnosing platelet function abnormalities and for detecting a person's bleeding tendency compared to the BTT, and commercially available in-vitro platelet function tests.
To collect three dimensional retinal measurements of the optic disc and the macula lutea on healthy normal subjects using the 3D OCT-1000 Mark II for the purpose of developing a normative database that is stratified by age.
Hypothesis: during fasting and exercise will there be an activation of sirtuins (Sirt1). Primarily the investigators will investigate Sirt1 activity in muscle- and fat-biopsies after fasting for 36 hours and after 1 hour of ergometer-cycling at 50 Vo2max. In addition to this the investigators will investigate the effect of fasting and exercise on the velocity of carbamide synthesis, aminoacid rate of turnover and glucose rate of turnover.
Potentially inappropriate prescribing is common in older patients and encompasses overuse, misuse and underuse of medications. Potentially inappropriate prescribing is associated with negative outcomes including adverse drug events and hospitalization. STOPP (Screening Tool of Older Person's potentially inappropriate Prescriptions) and START (Screening Tool to Alert doctors to Right Treatment) is a new screening tool designed to detect instances of potentially inappropriate medication use and under-prescribing of clinically indicated medications in older patients. The purpose of this study is to determine whether clinical implementation of STOPP/START criteria in hospitalized older patients is effective in improving prescribing quality.
This study will measure the bioavailability of allicin, the main active compound of garlic, from garlic supplements and garlic foods (raw, cooked, processed) so that - supplement manufacturers and clinical investigators know how supplements need to be made and consumed to obtain high bioavailability - consumers can know how garlic can be prepared to obtain any established health benefits of garlic.
The investigators propose a cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT) of computerized point-of-care alerts in the EHR to prevent errors related to laboratory monitoring at the initiation and continuation of drug therapy and a results management system to prevent errors related to the delay in follow-up of abnormal laboratory testing.
Research Protocol Assessment of Hip, Spine and Lower Limbs Digital Radiograph Measurements in Pediatric Population: using PACS integrated Computer Software (TraumaCad from OrthoCrat ™). Introduction The integration of the PACS system into many medical institutions created a plethora of digital measurements to assess anatomic and deformity parameters for torso and limbs. A number of commercial digital software is being offered to supply the medical practioner with tools to assess normal and pathological bony architecture land marks. The relevant architecture of the pelvis (hip joint), spine and the length and alignment of lower limbs may be measured using these digital software's. The validity and accuracy of digital work in comparison to conventional radiographs has been studied recently, mainly with lower extremity axial alignment, the digital length and anatomical angles measurements were found to be more reliable in terms of intra observer reliability than conventional radiographs (1, 2). Study purposes 1. To compare the, accuracy and reliability of specifically designed digital software (TraumaCad from OrthoCrat ™) measurements using wizard guidance, to those produced by using the tool bar (ruler and angle guide tools) of the DICOM folder. 2. To assess intra and inter observer reliability of the TraumaCad software for different pediatric orthopaedics conditions. Methods *Twenty hip joins radiographs (AP views) of patients who suffer from Cerebral Palsy (10) and Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (10) will be measured using the TraumaCad software hip joint wizard, and than again using basic tools of the DICOM folder. **Twenty spinal scoliosis radiographs (AP and Lat views) will be measured using the TraumaCad software templates. ***Ten digital radiographs of long leg standing (AP views) from normal and from patients with deformities will ne analyzed for length and angular differences using the LLD wizard. The following parameters will be measured *Hip joint radiographs: Acetabular Angle, Central Edge Angle, and Reimer's Index **Spinal radiographs: Cobe Angle (AP views), Coronal Balance, Sagital Balance. ***Long standing views: length of Femur and Tibia, mLDFA, mMPTA, mLDTA, JLCA, (the "Baltimore numbers"). All measurements will be taken by 4 senior orthopaedic surgeons after consensus conference for the technique. Intra observer reliability will be tested by repeating the same set of measurements on 2 different dates, after all radiographs are randomly mixed and done at least 2 days apart. High resolution single computer will be used for all measurements by all participating surgeons. The intra and inter observer reliability for the hip joint measurements will be calculate to compared between TraumaCad software wizard and the DICOM measurements tools. All measurements using TraumaCad software will be analyzed for intra and inter observer reliability using accepted statistical tools. The regulatory effects of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) concern almost all organs which permanently feed information back to this global biological vigilance system controlling allostasis. Heart rate fluctuations are highly dependent on ANS control, making the heart one of the best indicators of ANS activity. Low ANS activity level is associated with severe cardiac and cerebral events, as well as to death from any cause in the general population. It is even associated with sleep apnea/hypopnea.
