Filter by:The purpose of this study is to identify neurocognitive functions and language processing of 8-year-old children who were fed either breast milk, milk-based formula or soy-based formula during the first year of life.
Our group has discovered that routine vaccinations in childhood may have non-specific and sex-differential effects on overall mortality. The effects are so large that they may have marked effects on overall mortality and seriously distort female-to-male mortality rates in high-mortality settings. We recently experienced periods during which oral polio vaccine (OPV) was lacking. Hence, some children did not get the recommended OPV at birth. We were following all infants as a part of a vitamin A supplementation trial. Surprisingly, we discovered that not receiving OPV was associated with significantly lower mortality in boys, but not in girls. We bled a subgroup of the children. Receiving OPV at birth significantly dampened the immunological response to BCG given at birth in both sexes. Based on these observations, receiving OPV at birth may have two negative effects, first, it may increase male mortality, and second, it may interfere with immunity against tuberculosis. OPV at birth is given for logistic reasons, to boost polio immunity. There have been no polio cases in Guinea-Bissau for the last 10 years. Hence, there is every reason to test in a randomised trial whether not receiving OPV at birth is associated with 1) mortality, morbidity and growth and 2) immunological response to BCG.
Force enhancement (FE) describes the phenomenon of strength potentialization of a muscle cell or the complete muscle during and after active extension compared to the strength of an isometric contraction with same muscle length. The underlying physiological mechanism of this phenomenon is not completely known today. In vitro trials indicate that the interaction of an active and a passive component on the cellular level are responsible for the higher strength measurements. So far FE could be shown in vitro and in vivo on muscle fibers and small human muscles. Further research is needed for verification of the existence of FE in voluntary motor activity in everyday life. In order to approach this objective the investigators will scrutinize the functionality of the deliberately activated musculus (m) quadriceps femoris during and after active extension on the basis of in vivo studies.
The American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology (AHA/ACC) recently encouraged "increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish or capsule form (1 g/day) for risk reduction" and stated that "for treatment of elevated triglycerides, higher doses are usually necessary for risk reduction" (Smith SC et al. Circulation 2006;113:2363-72). These recommendations are based on conflicting evidence about the efficacy of the omega-3 treatment with data derived from single randomized trials or non-randomized studies (Smith SC et al. Circulation 2006;113:2363-72). Much effort has been undertaken to elucidate the role of omega-3 fatty acids in the development of cardiovascular disease, but even recent meta-analyses deliver no clear picture; they either favor (Mozaffarian D Jama 2006;296:1885-99) or reject (Hooper L Bmj 2006;332:752-60) the hypothesis of cardioprotective effects of omega-3 FAs. The objective of the clinical study is to study the effects of fish oil on blood and urinary markers of inflammation and cell stress. By using different permutations of high-dose supplementation of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids versus different alimentary omega-3 fish doses and grain alcohol versus different kinds of red wine, this trial will study how omega-3 fatty acids, ethanol and red wine constituents modulate biomarkers of inflammation and cell stress.

The primary purpose is to test intersubject variability and establish the qualitative features of normal VRI images and the range of normality of the VRI quantitative lung data values that may be used to differentiate normal from abnormal breath sound distribution. Our hypothesis was that VRI breath sound images of healthy subjects are similar in a qualitative and quantitative manner.
