Effects of Mode of Administration of Soluble Fibre Blend on Glycemia, Appetite & Sensory Parameters

FI-FORM
Start date: July 2012
Phase: Phase 1/Phase 2
Study type: Interventional

Soluble, viscous fibre has been established as an effective dietary component for lowering postprandial glycemia and promoting satiety. The effectiveness of viscous fibre has been related to its ability to increase the viscosity of the intra-luminal contents of the small intestine. Hence, the proposed mechanism with which soluble fibre affects the glycemic response, dependent on the viscosity development in the gut, would require that soluble fibre be extractable from the food matrix. This, in part, may be dependent on the food matrix that the soluble fibre is incorporated in. While properties of soluble fibre and their physiological effects have been studied extensively, limited data exists on the most effective mode of administration of fibre to optimize benefits. Furthermore, there are no studies to date that have evaluated how different modes of highly viscous soluble fibre would affect the subsequent meal. Hence, we propose a research study to determine whether the form of administration, taking into consideration the carbohydrate availability of a viscous fibre blend supplement, has a significant impact on postprandial and second meal glycemic response and subjective satiety in healthy individuals.

The Efficacy and Safety of Iron Supplementation

Start date: March 2012
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Each year, 5 million packs of iron tablets are dispensed in England and Wales to treat anaemia due to iron deficiency. Iron tablets are not always easy to take. The investigators think that there could be ways to reduce the number of iron tablets needed, by increasing the dietary intake of iron. In this study the investigators will assess the efficacy and safety of a dietary iron supplement compared to iron tablets using controls and new biomarkers.

The Lifestyle moDIfCation Study

LUDIC
Start date: February 2012
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Rationale: Lifestyle modifications, such as increasing physical exercise and reducing dietary salt and saturated fat intake contribute to prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Relevant improvements can already be achieved by small adaptations in everyday life. It is unclear whether simple low-cost interventions in the working environment can promote such healthy lifestyle adaptations. Objective: To study the effect of low-cost interventions for promoting healthy lifestyle modifications. Study design: Before-and-after intervention study. The study period will be subdivided in four parts of 2 weeks each: a run-in period, a before-measurement period, an intervention-period, and an after measurement period. Study population: Staff and visitors of the University Medical Center Utrecht. Study interventions: - Promotion of stair climbing. - Promotion of a low-salt soup alternative for the 'soup of the day'. - Promotion of a low-fat alternative for the butter croissants. - Exchange of the basket positions of butter and margarine between convenient and harder to reach locations. Outcome measures: - Number of passages through each part of the stair cases. - Number of low-salt cream soup and normal clear soup cups sold in the hospital restaurant and ratio between them. - Number of low-fat and normal croissants sold in the hospital restaurant and the ratio between them. - Number of low-fat margarine servings and butter servings sold in the hospital restaurant and the ratio between them.

Comparing the Reliability of Expressed Prostatic Secretion (EPS) and Post Massage Urine (PMU) for the Prediction of Prostate Cancer Biopsy Outcome

Start date: July 14, 2009
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This randomized pilot phase I trial studies the best way, either expressed prostatic secretion (EPS) or post massage urine (PMU) biomarkers, of predicting biopsy results in patients undergoing prostate biopsy. Studying samples of urine in the laboratory may help doctors detect prostate cancer. It is not yet known whether EPS or PMU biomarkers are more effective in predicting prostate biopsy results

Taiwanese People's Willingness to Participate in Cancer Screening: Colon, Oral Cavity, Breast, and Cervical Cancer Screening

Start date: October 2010
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

Cancer Screening is necessary for promoting cancer prevention in the area of public health. The Department of Health, Executive Yuan of the Republic of China has expanded and included colon cancer screening, oral cavity cancer screening, breast cancer screening, and cervical cancer screening in national-wide preventive healthcare services. However, most of the Taiwanese do not have the concepts of what cancer screening is and regular participation of cancer screening. This will easily cause their neglect of quality of personal healthcare and habits of cancer screening. Recently, in order to reach the national goal of cancer prevention, the parallel methods, multi-promotion for reinforcing concepts and free cancer screening, have been utilized to cultivate Taiwanese people's active participation of cancer screening. Therefore, this study will use health service utilization model to investigate Taiwanese people's concepts of cancer-related knowledge and the major causes of low participation of cancer screening. In order to investigate Taiwanese people's health service utilization model and quality of health life, this study first review the related regulations and screening rates of cancer prevention, including cancers of colon, oral cavity, breast, and cervical, in Taiwan. In addition, the structured questionnaire will be conducted to collect, investigate, and analyze the relationship between the willingness of participating the aforementioned cancer screening and personal characteristics, quality of health life, medical history, and concepts of cancer, etc. It is expected that the results of this study will provide accurate and effective promotions of cancer screening to medical institutions and medical affairs to reinforce the concepts of participation for raising the rates of cancer screening; furthermore, to awaken Taiwanese people's crucial awareness of early treatment improves the chances of recovery on cancer.
