The CONQUEST-Study. Evaluation of Clinical Endpoints for Treatment-induced Changes in GERD-related Symptoms (BY1023/NL511)

The aim of the study is to compare two different endpoint measures: heartburn as assessed by the physicians versus gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)-related symptoms as assessed by the patient using the ReQuestâ„¢ questionnaire. The assessment is made in GERD-patients treated with a daily dose of 40 mg oral pantoprazole over an 8-week period.

A Study of Avastin (Bevacizumab) Plus Taxane-Based Therapy in Patients With Locally Recurrent or Metastatic Breast Cancer.

This single arm study will assess the safety and efficacy of a regimen of Avastin plus a taxane, with or without additional chemotherapy, as first-line treatment in patients with locally recurrent or metastatic breast cancer. All patients will receive Avastin (10mg/kg iv every 2 weeks, or 15 mg/kg iv every 3 weeks) plus taxane-based chemotherapy. If taxanes are contraindicated, alternative chemotherapy (other than anthracyclines or pegylated liposomal doxorubicin) may be used. The anticipated time on study treatment is until disease progression, and the target sample size is 500+ individuals.

Effect of Atazanavir on Endothelial Function in HIV-Infected Patients

It is known that certain antiviral therapies, the socalled protease inhibitors, used in the treatment of HIV infection has an untowarded effect on the blood vessels, promoting early occurence of atherosclerosis. A a newer protease inhibitor, atazanavir, has been shown to have no negative effect on the levels of blood cholesterol and it is hypothesized that this may indicate that atazanavir is less prone to induce atherosclerosis. An early sign of atherosclerosis is a reduced vasomotion and this study investigate the influence of atazanavir on functionality of the conduit blood vessels compared to that of "standard" antiviral therapy.

Cetuximab, Docetaxel, Cisplatin, and Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Locally Advanced Esophageal Cancer That Can Be Removed by Surgery

RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as docetaxel and cisplatin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Giving cetuximab, docetaxel, and cisplatin together with radiation therapy before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed. PURPOSE: This phase I/II trial is studying the side effects of cetuximab, docetaxel, cisplatin, and radiation therapy and to see how well they work in treating patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer that can be removed by surgery.
