Mannitol Versus Nitroglycerin for Kidney Injury Prevention in Robotic-assisted Radical Prostatectomy or Cystectomy

Laparoscopic and minimally-invasive robotic access has transformed the delivery of urological surgery. While associated with numerous desirable outcomes including shorter post-operative stay and faster return to preoperative function, these techniques have also been associated with morbidity such as reduced renal blood flow and post-operative renal dysfunction. The mechanisms leading to these renal effects complex are multifactorial, and have not been fully elucidated. However they are likely to include direct effects from raised intra-abdominal pressure, and indirect effects secondary to carbon dioxide absorption, neuroendocrine factors and tissue damage from oxidative stress. It is well documented that pneumoperitoneum places profound stress on the cardiovascular, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems; it also places strain on the renal system. During robotic surgery, continuous pneumoperitoneum and continuous rising of intra-abdominal pressure causes transient oliguria. Moreover, kidney function, estimated by the GFR, deteriorates during elevated intra abdominal pressure (IAP), and most of the studies identified decrease in renal blood flow (RBF) and renal cortical perfusion. Studies conducted to assess the contribution of the nitric oxide (NO) system to the renal hemodynamic/function alterations during pneumoperitoneum, concluded that these adverse effects are probably related to interference with the NO system, and could be partially ameliorated by pretreatment with nitroglycerine. Mannitol is an osmotic diuretic and a renal vasodilator that promotes tubular flow, prevents intratubular cast formation, decreases postischemic cellular swelling, and might serve as a free radical scavenger. Mannitol has traditionally been administered before renal surgeries to minimize perioperative renal dysfunction according to preclinical animal studies and clinical experience with renal transplantation. However, high-level clinical data in support of this belief are not available. The aim of this study is to characterize the effects of increased intra-abdominal pressure on renal perfusion and function in cases undergoing robotic lower tract urologic surgeries, and to assess the contribution of either mannitol or nitroglycerin infusion to the renal hemodynamic/function alterations during pneumoperitoneum.

Bone Bioactive Liquid Efficiency in Improving Dental Implant Osteointegration Oral Soft Tissue Hellingand Oral Surgery

The investigators implanted 264 Galaxy TS implants (with or without BBL) in 33 patients across both jaws. Implant stability and osseointegration were assessed using Initial Stability Quotient (ISQ) measurements, computed tomography (CBCT) scans and pain evaluations at various intervals post-surgery. Further, implant surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In vitro studies evaluated the efficacy of BBL on dental pulp pluripotent stem cells (DPPSCs) osteogenesis, and inflammatory factor modulation in human macrophages.

Epidemiology of Injuries in the Professional Women's Swedish National IceHockey League Permitted to Body-Checking

This research project can contribute to a deeper understanding of injury patterns among professional female ice-hockey players allowed to body check. An understanding of common injury types and mechanisms aids the clinician in diagnosis and management. This information can guide preventative strategies in the areas of education, coaching, rule enforcement, rule modifications, equipment improvement, and sportsmanship. Today, ice hockey is a sport associated with many severe injuries that not only causes suffering and lower quality of life for the athlete, but also costs society a lot of money. Reducing the number and severity of sport-related injuries is therefore of importance. Knowledge of the injury epidemiology of women's hockey could also contribute to better preventive training programs and other injury preventive actions in the sport. Currently, only a minority of all sports medicine research is made on female study participants (26). This research project has the possibility to gain more knowledge about the female athlete, not only applicable for elite hockey-players, but also for female athletes in different disciplines and in youth teams. Knowledge of factors associated with injury could also contribute to better injury preventive actions and highlight subgroups in extra need of future preventive interventions.

Analyze the natural recovery process of postoperative recurrent laryngeal nerve injury in esophageal cancer by tracking vocal cord movement (based on endoscopic examination) and hoarseness symptoms; combined with perioperative related surgical and laboratory indicators, identify the relevant risk factors associated with delayed recovery of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury.
