Filter by:Obesity is likely to be the disease of the 21th century. The growth of obesity is worldwide, a pandemic, and has increased globally in the last 30 years. Developed countries were more affected, but developing countries have increasingly contributed to this epidemic as they continue to modernize. The national and global burden of obesity, with its public health and financial implications, is projected to increase markedly in the next two decades. the study aimed to assess the effect of Vit D supplementation on preventing altered levels of calcium, Vit D, and parathormone after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
This parallel, double-blind, randomised controlled trial aims to assess the effect of a polyphenol-rich dietary supplement on obesity parameters, in combination with a hypocaloric diet, for adults with morbid obesity, bariatric surgery candidates. Participants (n=40) will be randomly assigned to intervention group (IG) or control group (CG). Together with a regular hypocaloric diet (1,200 kcal/d), the IG will be given the supplement and the CG will be given a placebo. Both groups will take three capsules a day (400 mg per capsule, a total of 1,200 mg), distributed in three daily intakes (with meals). After 12 weeks and 3 visits (baseline visit, week 6 and week 12), pre and post intervention data and intervention versus placebo data will be analysed. Anthropometric and health parameters, dietary habits, lifestyle characteristics and physical activity will be assessed, and blood and urine samples will be collected in all three visits. Faecal samples will be collected at baseline and visit 3. Results will provide evidence on the effects of a combination of polyphenols on several well-established obesity parameters and will unravel possible underlying mechanisms by metabolomic analyses and microbiota diversity.

Several case studies of severe and fatal infections have identified possible effects of obesity on disease progression; these effects include extensive viral replication in the deep lung, progression to viral pneumonia, and prolonged and increased viral shedding. The quadrivalent recombinant high-dose influenza vaccine has been shown to have greater immunogenicity and efficacy than standard influenza vaccine in non-obese adults older than 50 years. However, this vaccine has never been evaluated in obese subjects. Investigators thus planned this trial to assess whether the use of the new quadrivalent recombinant high-dose influenza vaccine (RIV4) will induce a better immunological answer than current quadrivalent standard vaccine (SD) in patients with severe obesity, with an acceptable safety profile, thus leading to a better protection against influenza in this population at high risk of influenza complications.

The overall relationship between sleeve gastrectomy and gastroesophageal reflux disease is still unclear. Only acid reflux can be detected in the esophagus with a standard 24-hour pH-meter. A 24-hour pH-meter is normal in 30-50% of patients with nonerosive reflux. Impedance-pH meter, on the other hand, is a newly developed technique and determines all kinds of reflux (gas, liquid, acid and non-acid), the level of reflux and the clearance time of the esophagus. This prospective series aims to examine the relationship between LSG operation and esophago-gastric physiology using intraluminal impedance testing before and after LSG operation.
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are major causes of illness and premature death worldwide and their incidence is increasing rapidly. Bariatric surgery is considered as the "gold-standard" surgical treatment for both conditions. However, not all patients do equally well after surgery and indeed the weight loss experienced by patients undergoing bariatric surgery can vary. As such when patients are seen after bariatric surgery in clinic they fall in one of the following two categories: 1. Good responders: this is the majority of patients who lose the expected amount of weight based on the published studies. 2. Poor responders: this is a small group of patients who either lose less than the expected amount of weight after bariatric surgery or lose the expected amounts of weight early after surgery but then regain a substantial proportion of the weight they have lost. The so-called "poor responders" are exposed to all the risks of the operation and do not benefit from the weight loss as much as good responders. This study would therefore like to investigate the physiological factors that distinguish poor from good responders before, and after bariatric surgery. The study team hypothesizes that compared to good responders, poor responders exhibit: 1. a smaller degree of fullness sensation after a meal, 2. a lower energy expenditure after a meal, and 3. genetic changes (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that predispose the poor responder to development of obesity. In addition, the study team hypothesizes that poor responders exhibit: 1. lower gut hormone secretion after a meal and 2. are less sensitive to the physiological action of gut hormones compared to good responders and that this difference in gut hormone secretion and response to gut hormones prior to bariatric surgery can be helpful to predict response to bariatric surgery.
The purpose of this study is to 1) evaluate the relationship of physical activity to quality of life and psychological functioning among adults with severe obesity (BMI>40) and 2) evaluate the effects of activity monitoring on changes in physical activity during a 6-week intervention interval.
This study randomizes patients to two commonly used peri-procedural antibiotics after gastric bypass with the pre and post-operative collection of stool samples, to identify significant differences in relative abundances of gut microbiota phyla, genera and species between the two antibiotic groups used. Gastric bypass may beneficially affect hypertension by altering the post-operative microbiome and specific antibiotics can further enhance the resolution rate by improving microbial diversity and richness.
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has proven to be an effective treatment for morbid obesity by reducing weight and comorbidities. Extending the pouch may improve weightloss without the increase of complications. Some patients regain weight after initially good weightloss. Placing a minimizer around the pouch may prevent weight regain.
