Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine which substances in cocoa produces changes in mental energy. This is a double blind study. The primary outcome measures are performance on tasks of sustained attention (serial subtract, continuous performance test and Bakan task) at pre and 90, 120 and 160 minutes post intervention, energy and fatigue symptoms (profile of mood state), and ratings of motivation to perform cognitive tasks. The assigned interventions are the following:
Postcancer fatigue (PCF) is a frequently occurring, severe and invalidating problem, impairing quality of life. Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) also suffer from severe fatigue symptoms. Although it is possible to effectively treat CFS, the nature of the underlying physiology remains unclear. The presence of an underlying immunological problem has been suggested as an explanation for PCF and CFS. The aim of this study is to compare the humoral and cellular immune responses upon influenza vaccination in PCF patients, CFS patients, non-fatigued cancer survivors, and healthy controls. PCF (n=20) and CFS patients (n=20) will be vaccinated against influenza. Age and gender matched non-fatigued cancer survivors (n=20) and healthy controls (n=20) will be included for comparison. Antibody responses will be measured at baseline and at day 21 by a hemagglutination inhibition test. T cell responses will be measured at baseline and at day 7 by lymphocyte proliferation, activation, and cytokine secretion.
The purpose of this study is to test the effects of a videotelephone-delivered patient-partner dual-focused cognitive behavioral stress management intervention on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) symptoms and related psychosocial and neuroimmune processes in patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Study tests the hypothesis that videophone-delivered patient-partner cognitive behavioral stress management (T-PP-CBSM) intervention improves patient CFS symptoms relative to a videophone-delivered patient-partner Health Information (PP-T- HI) condition.
The number of long-term cancer survivors is growing. As a result, treatment-related morbidity - such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, functional decline and fatigue - is impacting quality of life and impairing survival. Metabolic syndrome in the general population is currently treated with lifestyle advice to increase physical activity (PA) and reduce caloric intake. This approach is still underused as standard care for cancer survivors. The aim of this study is investigate whether a tailored PA program that starts early (during curative chemotherapy with cardiovascular toxic potential) is superior in terms of reducing long-term cancer-treatment-related metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular morbidity to a program that starts late (after completion of chemotherapy).
Fatigue is a common complaint after stroke, reported by 39-72% of patients. Poststroke fatigue is related to poor neurological recovery, low level of activities of daily living, decreased quality of life and may possibly affect the ability to return to work. Little is known about strategies addressing post-stroke fatigue and their effectiveness. Aim: to develop, test and evaluate a health promotion program based on strategies addressing poststroke fatigue.
This randomized clinical trial studies the preliminary efficacy of a yoga skills training (YST) compared to counseling and education (CE) for reducing treatment-related symptoms in patients with colorectal cancer who are receiving chemotherapy. The YST may reduce fatigue, other treatment-related symptoms, and improve the quality of life (QOL) of patients with colorectal cancer. It is not yet known whether YST is more effective then CE in reducing these outcomes.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disabling, unexplained disorder characterized by physical and mental exhaustion. Complaints of disturbed and unrefreshing sleep are very common in CFS patients, however, the relationship between (disturbed) sleep quality and fatigue is still not fully elucidated. To evaluate the effect of sodium oxybate on fatigue and to explore the interdependence of sleep quality and fatigue in CFS, a double blind, randomized, placebo controlled cross-over trial with sodium oxybate is carried out in CFS patients. The aim of this study is to address the issue of the effect of sodium oxybate on fatigue as a presenting symptom in chronic fatigue (CF) and CFS patients, in the absence of underlying medical or psychiatric illness. The answer to this question may shed further light on the enigmatic relationship between sleep and fatigue. We also want to investigate the effect of sodium oxybate on sleepiness and general health in the same target population. Zero-hypothesis: there is no effect.
Fatigue related to cancer is the most common reported symptom and it prevents 91% of patients of having an active life, and in several cases, the fatigue persists for several months or even years after treatment. Fatigue does cause an impact in all dimensions of patients' quality of life and it is the main cause of reduction in patients' daily life activities. Fatigue is reported by cancer patients in all phases of the illness as one of the most frequent symptoms, especially in cases presenting metastases. In order to monitor fatigue, pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques may be employed, such as physical activity. Physical exercise has shown positive results in mitigating fatigue improving cardiopulmonary functioning, physical capacity and patients' quality of life. This study will assess the efficiency of physical activity upon controlling the fatigue and quality of life in patients with advanced stage of the disease at the end of 7 days using FACT-F subscale.
Cancer-related fatigue occurs in both adult and pediatric patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. Recently, methods to measure fatigue have improved - however, no non-medication interventions have been studied. Ameliorating fatigue may result in an improved quality of life for patients. Acupuncture is a safe and well-tolerated procedure and has been used for many indications in pediatric patients. Adult studies have suggested improvement in cancer-related fatigue after acupuncture in adults. In this trial, we propose using acupuncture for the treatment in cancer-related fatigue in children and adolescents with central nervous system tumors.
OBJETIVE: To study the influence of musicotherapy in reduction of fatigue related to cancer in patients with breast's or gynecology's cancer, during the radiotherapy treatment.
