Optimising Patient Experience in Head and Neck Radiotherapy

This study is a phase III, randomized, single-centre, multiple arm trial examining the set-up accuracy of three different types of immobilization methods for head and neck cancer patients receiving radical radiation therapy. The methods of immobilization under investigation in this study are two types of open faced head and neck masks compared with the convention closed faced head and neck mask. Patients receiving treatment using an open faced mask will have their intra fraction motion monitored through the use of intra fraction surface guided monitoring. The study aims to determine the set-up accuracy of the three types of immobilization through measuring the magnitude of the translational corrections on the daily cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). To be eligible for the study a patient must be planned to receive a minimum of 30 fractions of head and neck radiation therapy. Patients distress levels associated with each type of immobilization device will be measured using the psychological measure General Health Questionnaire-12 (GHQ-12) which will be collected at the beginning and end of their course of radiation therapy treatment.

Non-invasive Spinal, Cortical, and Sensorimotor Biomarkers in Motor Neurone Disease

Substantial variability exists in the onset, and rate of degeneration across individuals with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This variability requires biomarkers that accurately classify and reliably track clinical subtypes as the disease progresses. Degeneration occurs in the brain and spinal cord, however, non-invasive diagnosis of spinal cord function remains highly challenging due to its unique alignment in spine. Disruption of complex spinal and cortical circuits that transmit and process neural signals for position sense and movement has not been adequately captured in the neurophysiological profiling of ALS patients. The overarching aim of this study is to reveal and quantify the extent of change in the sensorimotor integration and its potential contribution to network disruption in ALS.

The objective of this clinical study is to evaluate the long term safety and effectiveness of intrastromal implantation of the Allotex TransForm corneal allograft (TCA) for providing near vision in presbyopic subjects. A maximum of 101 eyes of qualified and consented subjects will undergo long term follow-up after instrastromal implantation of the TCA for presbyopia.

The Impact of E-cigarettes During Pregnancy on Childhood Health Outcomes Study

Tobacco smoking in pregnancy is now widely accepted as having adverse health outcomes for both the mother and fetus. Tobacco smoking in pregnancy is associated with increased incidence of miscarriage, stillbirth and preterm birth as well as low birthweight, respiratory infections, wheeze and asthma in childhood. E-cigarettes are a popular method for trying to quit smoking in Ireland and there has been an explosion in the use of e-cigarettes over the past ten years. However, there is currently insufficient evidence on their long-term safety and effectiveness as a smoking cessation tool. E-cigarettes contain varying combinations of compounds and flavours which are used differently in different e-cigarette types, with unknown long-term effects. Research has shown that pregnant women perceive e-cigarettes to be a healthier option when compared with tobacco smoking. But, there is very little known about the long-term health impact of exposure of unborn babies to e-cigarettes during pregnancy. The ECHO study will determine what the long-term health outcomes are in children born to mothers who use e-cigarettes during pregnancy. Specifically, we will focus on birth, nutritional, brain development and respiratory outcomes in children. To answer this research question, the ECHO study will recruit infants born to women who use e-cigarettes during pregnancy across three maternity hospitals and follow them up over 2 years. We will invite women at their booking visit to take part in this research study. We plan to also recruit a similar number of both non-smoking and tobacco smoking pregnant women for comparison. We will record a detailed record of e-cigarette and tobacco use by women during pregnancy as well as checking smoking using special monitoring tools. After the baby is born, we will perform growth measurements, neurocognitive assessments and a respiratory questionnaire at 6 months, one year and two years of age.

The Oral Symptom Assessment Scale in Older Patients With Frailty

Oral (or mouth) symptoms are common in older patients who live with frailty. It is known that frailty describes someone's overall resilience and how this relates to the chances of recovery following a health problem. A questionnaire called the Oral Symptom Assessment Scale (or OSAS) was designed to look at mouth symptoms in patients who had an advanced cancer. These symptoms may overlap with patients who have frailty. This research study is taking place to find out if the OSAS will be a suitable questionnaire that can be used in older patients with frailty. This study will take place in Our Lady's Hospice & Care Services, Harold's Cross and St James' Hospital over six months.

H. Pylori Screen-and-treat Study in a Population of Young Adults

Gastric cancer remains a major challenge to public health on a global scale. H. pylori related cancer burden contributes to the largest proportion of cancer cases attributable to infections in Europe. Considering its absolute burden and persisting disparities, in addition to the substantial prevalence of H. pylori infection worldwide that is treatable, gastric cancer is a logical target for urgent action for prevention. Population-based H. pylori test-and-treat has therefore been proposed as a strategy for gastric cancer prevention. To fill the gaps in knowledge about gastric cancer prevention through H. pylori screening and eradication in younger adults, a study of a population-based H. pylori test-and-treat strategy in Ireland, Croatia, Latvia, Poland, Romania and Slovenia. Main goals of this study are to assess future program processes, feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness. In total of 6,800 adults aged 30-34 will be tested for H. pylori infection. They will be randomly selected to represent the chosen population and invited to participate in the study based on informed consent. Confirmed infections will be treated by available combined therapy in line with treatment guidelines and the success of eradication will be retested during a control check-up. Patients who will provide their consent to participate will undertake an interview about the risk factors in early childhood and their habits regarding alcohol consumption and use of tobacco. Compliance to testing and treatment, treatment results, adverse effects and reasons for dropping out will be additionally monitored. Gathered data will be analysed in alignment with our research questions. The investigators will disseminate reports and present the results to both the general public and the scientific community in order to foster future developments in gastric cancer prevention.

The goal of this post-market clinical follow up Study is to demonstrate the efficacy, safety, acceptability, and quality of life implications of Essilor® Stellest® spectacle lenses in slowing myopia progression in European children and adolescents. Participants will receive Essilor® Stellest® at inclusion visit and will be asked for a full time wear (>12 hours daily) for 24 months. The primary endpoints are the change in axial length and cycloplegic autorefraction from baseline to 24 months compared to expected change based on axial length and refraction centile positions at baseline.

After receiving a referral or self-referral, they conduct an assessment, connect people to services in the community, and follow-up with people over time. This project will investigate if connecting to physical activities through an intermediary can improve health and wellbeing. It will also investigate people's experiences of working with an intermediary. This project is a pilot feasibility study, which means the investigators are evaluating the measures used and the way the trial is designed to see if they are suitable for a larger study in the future.

Assess the Effect of a Whole Fruit Powder on Gut Microbiome Function on Overweight & Obese Adults

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effect of freeze-dried blueberry powder on the gut microbiome in overweight and obese adults. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: - Does the supplementation of freeze-dried blueberry powder reduce the risk of obesity or lower the weight of people with a high BMI? - Does freeze-dried blueberry powder alter the gut microbiome function? Participants will; - Mix one sachet of Study Product (freeze-dried blueberry powder/placebo) into breakfast/dessert/yoghurt daily for 56 days during the intervention phase. - Partake in 4 site visits over the 14-week period, including an initial screening visit and a follow-up visit after the intervention phase. Researchers will compare the effect of freeze-dried blueberry powder with a placebo in a population comprising overweight and obese adults to see if the gut microbiome is altered and if there is a change in body composition.
