Filter by:To date, focused and radial types of extracorporeal shock wave therapy have been effectively used in lateral epicondylitis. However, studies directly addressing a comparison between radial and focused types of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in lateral epicondylitis have not been done. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate comparative effects of radial and focused extracorporeal shock wave therapy options on lateral epicondylitis.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of using white noise, embracing and facilitated tucking on physiological parameters, crying duration and pain during heel lance blood sampling in healthy newborns. This study was a prospective, randomized controlled trial. The study was conducted with healthy newborns who were born between 38 and 42 weeks of gestation. The newborns were divided into 4 groups by the applied pain relief methods during heel lance blood sampling in newborns; embracing(n=40), white noise(n=40), facilitated tucking(n=40) and control group (n=40). The physiological changes were evaluated before and after the procedure. NIPS (Neonatal Infant Pain Scale) was used for pain scoring.
Following laparoscopic bariatric surgery, multimodal analgesia is recommended to avoid the adverse effects of opioids by reducing their use. Although lidocaine, ketamine, and dexmedetomidine have been used as adjuvant analgesics, no studies have evaluated the superiority of their intra- and postoperative infusions as components of multimodal analgesia in bariatric surgery. The present study is aimed to compare lidocaine, dexmedetomidine, and ketamine in multimodal analgesia management following Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery. Postoperative pain scores, the requirement for additional postoperative analgesia, retching, nausea and vomiting, time to mobilization, and hospital length of stay will be evaluated.
The rationale of this study was to compare the efficacy of peri-tract bupivacaine infiltration with intravenous post-operative analgesia following PCNL in reference to the context with the previous studies so that we can adopt the better technique to curtail the post-operative pain.
Orthodontic pain has been the primary concern from all patients who requires orthodontic treatment. The design of the study will help us comprehend how patient experienced and managed pain during their orthodontic treatment, average pain level in different orthodontic appliances and factors that could affect pain level experience during treatment, including gender, age, brackets types, hygiene level and habitude.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a very common but mysterious pain disorder characterized by chronic widespread muscular pain. Fatigue, anxiety and depression are common comorbidities. The syndrome is commonly associated with several symptoms, including fatigue, sleeping disturbance, cognitive impairment, and comorbid pain syndrome, especially irritable bowel symptoms and temporomandibular disease. Anxiety and depression are common psychiatric co-morbidies. Daily stress is believed to trigger or aggravate pain conditions. These symptoms can markedly affect patients' quality of life, and even lead to disability. So far, the etiology and pathogenesis are largely unknown, and diagnostic biomarkers and curative treatment remain to be developed. Recent technological advances enable scientists to explore mechanisms by genetic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic researches. However, no definitive result has been concluded for clinical practice so far. In this study, the investigators use tailored questionnaires to evaluate fibromyalgia and associated symptoms, including numeric rating scale for soreness, widespread soreness index, Fibromyalgia impact questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and perceived stress scale. The investigators also use metabolomics and lipidomic approach to probe the potential pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. In our prior translation research (PMID: 32907805), the investigators found that excessive LPC16:0 resulting from lipid oxidization inflicts psychological stress-induced chronic non-inflammatory pain via activating ASIC3. In this content, our prior translational research identified a potential nociceptive ligand that causes fibromyalgia symptoms, which is likely to function as biomarkers for diagnosis or disease monitor. In the current clinical investigation, the investigators aim to reversely translate the novel findings in animal studies and validate the bio-significance of LPC16:0 for fibromyalgia with clinical approaches.
This study will use a randomized controlled design to test whether medical marijuana use by adults on high-dose chronic opioid therapy (COT) for chronic non-cancer pain is associated with reduced opioid dose and improved pain intensity and interference when added to a 24-week behavioral intervention (POTS).
This study was conducted to determine the effect of progressive relaxation exercises with music therapy on sleep quality and pain severity of patients hospitalized in the surgical departments of a university hospital. This single-blind, pre-test-post-test with control group design quasi-experimental study was carried out between March-July 2019. 31 patients who were hospitalized in surgical departments for at least one week and regularly performed relaxation exercises consisted of experimental group, and 31 patients who were hospitalized for at least one week but did not do relaxation exercises consisted of control group. The study data were collected by using "Descriptive Characteristics Form", pain severity of patients was measured using "Visual Analogue Scale", and sleep quality of patients was measured using "Visual Analogue Sleep Scale". The patients were asked to perform the exercises with music an average of 30 min before sleeping every day for a week. The observation of the nurse working in department and the patient's statement were used for control. The ethical permission and the approval of hospital management were obtained for the study. In the statistical analysis of the data, independent sample t test, one-way anova and paired sample t test were used. Statistical significance level was taken as p<.05.
Intravitreal injections (IVI) are the mainstay of treatment modality in many ophthalmologic diseases including neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and retinal vascular occlusions. Patients endure monthly IVI for several years. Although standardized topical anesthesia protocols are being carried out, many still suffer from pain during and after the procedure. Previous studies at the investigators clinic have demonstrated that alpha-agonist eye drops and cool eye compresses can be successfully used in order to reduce pain levels when administered prior to IVI. In the current research, the investigators wish to study whether cooled anesthetic eye drops and antiseptics can be utilized as well to reduce the pain and subconjunctival hemorrhage caused by bevacizumab IVI.
Background: Stress is the critical method for survive of reacting to a condition including a threat, challenge or physical and psychological challenge. Stress either physiological or biological is an organism's response to a stressor such as an environmental condition. Stimuli that alter an organism's environment are responded to by multiple systems in the body. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system are major systems which the body reacts to the stress. It has been reported that cancer patients receiving chemotherapy perceived a lot of stress. It has been believed and well known that stress-related illness is one of the reasons contributing to the increase in long-term sick leave during the last decade in many countries. Purpose: The aims of this study are to evaluate the effects of aromatherapy on cancer patient receiving chemotherapy: 1) for physical effects by meridian electrical conductance, heart rate variability (HRV), vital sign, visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain; 2) for psychologic effects by State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Materials and methods: This is a prospective, pre post comparison study. A total of 40 cancer patients receiving chemotherapy will be recruited as participants in this study. The characteristics data will be collected in all participants. Blood orange and rosewood will be chosen as the essential oils for aromatherapy in this study. Essential oils will be applied to all participants by inhalation for 30 minutes. Meridian electrical conductance, HRV, vital sign, VAS for pain, and STAI were evaluated and compared before and after aromatherapy. Expected outcomes: It is expected to understand more about the effects of aromatherapy on the meridian system, HRV and emotional status by undertaking 30 minutes session aromatherapy intervention for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. The results may suggest aromatherapy as one of the affiliated programs of chemotherapy.
