Pterostilbene is one of several stilbenes found in certain berries, particularly blueberries, that have demonstrated pre-clinical benefit to cholesterol, blood pressure, and oxidative stress. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether pterostilbene will help control cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as improve markers for oxidative stress in patients with dyslipidemia meeting inclusion criteria. The investigators also want to look at the safety of pterostilbene in these patients.
Forty overweight and obese subjects (BMI 25-39.9) with metabolic syndrome will be randomized to inadequate dairy (<0.5 serving/day) and adequate dairy (3.5 servings/day) weight maintenance (eucaloric) diets for 12 weeks. Body weight will be measured weekly and body composition (via dual X-ray absorptiometry), insulin sensitivity index, plasma lipids and calcitrophic hormones will be measured at weeks 0, 4 and 12 of the dietary intervention. Oxidative burden will be assessed by measurement of plasma malonaldehyde, 8-isoprostane F2α and oxidized LDL and inflammatory stress will be assessed by measurement of IL-6, IL-15, MCP, C-reactive protein, adiponectin and TNF-α levels in plasma at 0, 1, 4 and 12 weeks). An additional global evaluation of diet-induced changes in cytokines will be conducted using cytokine protein arrays to profile relative changes in 36 additional potentially relevant cytokines. All data will be analyzed via two-factor (diet X obesity status) multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA)
The study is done to find out whether the combined use of the nutritional supplements N-acetylcysteine and Siliphos (milk thistle extract) corrects the shedding of urine protein and oxidative damage (damage to cells and organs often compared to fast aging) in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and diabetic kidney disease.
Liver fibrosis is the most serious complication of schistosomiasis mansoni. However only limited proportion of subjects with infection develop this pathology and there is limited knowledge on risk factors for the differential morbidity patterns observed in endemic communities. Our preliminary cross-sectional study indicated that serum levels of antioxidants may be related with the development of fibrosis. The present project is a randomised double blinded placebo controlled prospective study investigating the role of food based antioxidant supplements on the outcome of anti-schistosomal chemotherapy with regards to the extent of fibrosis reversal.
This study investigates the effects of daily use of lithia water on blood tests of neuronal oxidative stress, mood, and well-being. Lithia water is a type of pure spring water containing trace levels of lithium, which is a naturally occurring mineral. Neuronal oxidative stress is caused by normal chemical reactions in the human body that sometimes result in damage to brain cells. Participation in this study will last for 8 weeks and includes daily use of study water for drinking. The primary objective of this pilot study is to test the hypothesis that, in healthy male participants, daily use of lithia water will improve neurogenesis and antioxidant capacity as measured by serum levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and oxidative stress markers. Secondary objectives will include examining self-reported changes in mood, cognition, and well-being.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the ability of portable high efficiency particle air (HEPA) filters to reduce exposures to PM2.5 and woodsmoke air pollution indoors and to improve subclinical indicators of microvascular function, systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress among healthy adult participants.
Glutathione is a powerful protective substance found within every cell in the body. It has been shown that glutathione levels go down as a person gets older, which makes a person more likely to get heart disease, high blood sugar problems and different kind of cancers. N-Acetyl Cysteine is used as a dietary supplement. It has been reported to increase glutathione levels in the body. The diet supplement called ProImmune is also changed by the body into glutathione. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out the effect of ProImmune in healthy people. This study will also help to prove whether or not the ProImmune is able to improve the blood levels of glutathione in healthy people.
Eight healthy adult subjects will be given a meal of one, two or four cups red raspberries, or two slices white bread with or without 200 mg vitamin C, after an overnight fast and consumption of a low polyphenol diet for two days. Blood samples will be taken at various time points over an eight hour period to measure oxidative stress and antioxidant levels in the blood. Each subject will attend 5 study visits with one week intervals and be given each meal in a random order. It is hypothesized that raspberry consumption at higher doses will greater protect against meal-induced oxidative stress compared to bread controls.
Despite widespread efforts to improve the treatment of obesity, only limited progress has been made. Calorie restriction (CR) has consistently been shown to produce weight loss, as well as delay the onset of age-related diseases, in numerous species. Most overweight individuals, however, are unable to sustain CR induced weight losses, possibly due to internal feedback systems that signal the body to increase food intake or decrease energy expenditure in response to weight loss. Novel treatment approaches are thus urgently needed that can assist overweight individuals in adhering to a CR regimen over the long-term. Botanicals represent an important and underexplored source of potential new therapies that may facilitate CR. In particular, one promising botanical that may reduce food intake and body weight by affecting neuroendocrine pathways related to satiety is Garcinia Cambogia (Garcinia Cambogia Desr.)-derived (-)-hydroxycitric acid. This compound has been found to facilitate weight loss in a number of studies. To date, few studies have directly tested the effect that this botanical on food intake in humans, its mechanism of action, or its effect on oxidative stress levels; thus rigorous scientific studies on this compounds need to be conducted. A double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study will be conducted to explore the role that two different doses of this botanical compound have on food intake, satiety, weight loss, and oxidative stress levels. It is hypothesized that compared to placebo, both doses of Garcinia Cambogia (hydroxycitric acid) will reduce food intake, increase satiety, decrease weight, and reduce oxidative stress levels.
