Glycoxidation, Arterial Biomechanics, and Target Organ Damage

Vascular target organ damage (TOD), defined as structural or functional deleterious changes in large and small arteries, is related to unfavorable arterial biomechanics, atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction due to unfavorable redox and glycation status states on the bases of these phenomena. However, little is known about the role of glycoxidation on arterial biomechanics and TOD in apparently healthy individuals. The main hypothesis is that glycation and glycoxidation status are associated with arterial biomechanical abnormalities and TOD in patients with moderate to high cardiovascular risk. This is an observational, ambispective, and multicenter project that will include non-smoking patients over 18 years, without diabetes mellitus or established cardiovascular disease. Demographic, epidemiological, and clinical-anthropometric variables will be collected, including data from ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. We will measure the serum percentage of glycated hemoglobin and fructosamine levels; along with quantification of skin advanced glycation end productos (AGEs). Plasma concentration, activity, and structure of catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase in relation to the patient's glycation and glycoxidation status will be also evaluated. Concurrently, several biomechanical parameters will be assessed in the Common, Internal Carotid Artery, and distal limb arteries using ultrasound exploration. Incipient microvasculature damage will be also evaluated by retinal image. Patients will be followed up for the development of arterial biomechanical abnormalities and TOD, along with cardiovascular events and mortality.

Effect of Krill Oil Supplementation on Red Blood Cell Physiology Against Changes in Markers of Iron Metabolism.

Research group: the research will be conducted in a homogeneous group of professional rowers (N=30), all competitors qualified for the Polish Youth Rowing Team: - aged 18 - 24, because the age group must be homogeneous, - the size of the group is about thirty people, which in the case of a homogeneous group will enable statistical analyzes to be conducted. Rowing performance test: at the beginning and at the end of the training camp, participants will perform a test on a rowing ergometer (Concept II, USA), each subject will have to cover a distance of 2000 m in the shortest possible time, which is the distance starting in rowing competitions. The results of both tests will be considered in the selection for the championship team; therefore, athletes will be well motivated to perform both tests with maximum effort. The investigators set a research hypothesis that supplementation with krill oil may have a beneficial effect on athletes by limiting lipid peroxidation and inhibiting ferroptosis which in consequence may lead to red blood cell membrane protection.

Gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with abnormal blood sugar levels throughout pregnancy in women without prior diabetes. Many studies have been conducted on the relationship between diabetes and oxidative stress. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the presence of fundus findings in patients with gestational diabetes and/or impaired blood sugar based on the results of previous studies and to simultaneously investigate the thiol-disulfide homeostasis in the tears of the patients.There was no previous study in the literature on thiol disulfide homeostasis in tears in gestational diabetic patients.

The present study is a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical study in which 94 individuals will be screened, and considering a screening failure rate of 20%, approximately 76 participants will be randomized in a ratio of 1:1 to receive either CaroRiteā„¢ or placebo and will be assigned a unique randomization code. Each group will have at least 30 completed participants after accounting for a dropout/withdrawal rate of 20%. The intervention duration for all the study participants is 90 days.

Effect on Markers of Cardiovascular, Reproductive and Cancer Risk From Firefighting Training

Epidemiological studies based on Danish registries have observed that Danish male firefighters have more cardiovascular disease, infertility diagnose and a trend to increased risk of cancer than other Danish employed males. Firefighting activities include a combination of stressors such as strenuous work under heat, smoke and soot known to be able to affect cardiovascular and reproductive health, with smoke and soot also being known to increase the risk of cancer. The training facilities of real-fire extinguishing exercises in Denmark operate using wood or natural gas fire, which will have differential gradients of smoke, soot and possibly heat. The investigators will use different training conditions to create gradients of the different stressors and investigate health effects thereof. With this approach, the investigators expect to be able to evaluate the individual contribution of the different stressors in markers of cardiovascular, cancer and reproductive health risk. The project will include approx. 35 young conscript participants on a firefighting course, followed in four sessions, three firefighting training sessions under different fire conditions (no fire, wood fire and gas fire) and one control scenario.

Effect of Combined Antioxidant Therapy on Oxidative Stress Markers and Inflammatory Cytokines in Patients With Tinnitus

The main objective of our study is to evaluate the effect of combinated antioxidants therapy with Adepsique® (amitriptyline, perphenazine, and diazepam) on patients with tinnitus chronic symptoms, evaluating the levels of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in blood. The researchers intend to include 58 patients, divided into two intervention groups, who will be randomly assigned a pill with antioxidants or placebo, and the patient must eat one pill per day for 3 months. In the study, the clinical characteristics of tinnitus, inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers will be evaluated, before, during and after the intervention with antioxidant therapy. Subsequently, the clinical and sample results will be evaluated to compare the effects between them.
