Filter by:The General Aim of this study is to verify if a short term supplementation can modulate diverse aspects related to the physical regular high intensity activity. To get this general aim and following the criteria established by the EFSA Guides, this general aim will be divided in specific or concrete aims, and will be studied by its specific analytical. First Specific Aim: To study how the supplementation with 200 mg of ubiquinol in a short term (2 weeks) study can influence the physical performance, resitance , muscle function and weakening: maintenance of normal muscle function, maintenance of endurance performance, increase in endurance performance/capacity, reduction in the rated perceived exertion/effort during exercise, increase in physical performance and maintenance of muscle mass and piscological variables that the sportsman suffers before and after the high intensity exercise. Second Specific Aim: To study how the supplementation with 200 mg of ubiquinol in a short term (2 weeks) study can influence the biochemical and haematological parameters in sportsman. Third Specific Aim: To study how the supplementation with 200 mg of ubiquinol in a short term (2 weeks) study can influence the oxidative stress asociated to a high intensity exercise. Fourth Specific Aim: To study how the supplementation with 200 mg of ubiquinol in a short term (2 weeks) study can influence the inflammatory signaling, the activity of diverse pro - and anti-inflammatory citokines associated to high intensity exercise.
Increasing Reactive oxygen and nitrogen production occurred simultaneously with decreasing serum and intracellular level of antioxidants and enzymes in critical ill patients, which result in increasing ventilator dependency and length of stay in intensive care unit and it also accelerate organ failures in patients. In this double blind clinical trial, the investigators examine effect of alfa-lipoic acid on those patients who admitted to intensive care unit that the investigators expect to stay for more than 7 days in this ward and who have tube feeding and don't have severe liver and kidney failure, AIDS and hepatitis. After randomization of included patients by block randomization the investigators will give 900mg/day alfa-lipoic acid for ten days to treatment group and identical placebo to control group by naso-gastric tube. The purposes of this study are decreasing ventilator dependency period, length of stay in ICU, mortality and decelerate of organ failures.
The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in patients suffering from non valvular atrial fibrillation is derived from studies regarding recurrences of atrial fibrillation after catheter ablation. Prospective studies in european countries are lacking. Furthermore, the impact of metabolic syndrome on cardiovascular events in patients with non valvular atrial fibrillation is still unknown.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of especial diet therapy "Anti-inflammatory Diet" on inflammatory, oxidative stress, and nutritional markers in the context of protein-energy wasting syndrome(PEW) in hemodialysis patients.
The investigators are investigating whether the flax lignan, secoisolariciresinol diglucoside, decreases oxidative stress and inflammation. The flax seed lignan is believed to be broken down in the body to produce the health benefits of flax. Flax lignan is separated from the whole flax seed as this compound is believed to have health effects. Decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation should improve a number of the problems associated with aging. This intervention consists of 600 milligrams of the flax lignan SDG daily or an equivalent amount of whey protein. The investigators are comparing lignan to a placebo (whey powder) to examine whether a dietary intervention (i.e. flax seed containing lignan) might decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.
Purpose: This study investigates the effects of dietary zeolite + dolomite on performance, exercise-induced acidosis, oxidative stress, inflammation and intestinal barrier dysfunction in trained people. Gestational diabetes (GD) is defined by a hyperglycemia discovered during pregnancy, leading to fetal and maternal complications which may be prevented by reaching very strict glycaemia targets. Prevalence depends on patient's ethnic group and is about 6 to 14%. This prevalence is increasing due to increased GD risk factors (obesity, pregnancy over 35) and also because criteria of screening have been strengthened after the results of last studies. Usual treatment is diet and in case of failure insulin therapy with multiple injections which may lead to hypoglycemia and weight gain and is very difficult to manage for patients. Some studies have shown the comparable effect of metformin and insulin in about 50% of GD obese patients. The aim of our study is to evaluate efficacy of metformin, outcomes in mother and fetus and baby of metformin. In case of metformin failure, insulin will be added in order to obtain glycaemia in desired goals.Oxidative stress will be assessed in mother blood, baby umbilical cord blood, baby umbilical cord and placenta in 90 women and the oxidative stress compared between insulin and metformin alone treated patients.
The purpose of this study is to determine the safety, bioavailability, and effectiveness of an organic yeast-selenium compound in reducing brain oxidative stress. Oxidative stress in the brain has been linked to a variety oif disorders including Alzheimer's disease. Selenium is a very powerful antioxidant that could prove useful in reducing the harmful effects of oxidative stress in the brain and may help prevent diseases such as Alzheimer's. Our recent work has demonstrated that the specific type of selenium compound greatly influences it's ability to enhance brain health and prevent Alzheimer changes in mouse models of this disease. This study will enroll 24 participants and will allow us to test the hypotheses that yeast-selenium supplementation is safe in the elderly, and that our specific formulation reduces brain oxidative stress.
The purpose of the present investigation is to compare the responses and adaptations of young and elderly individuals to repeated eccentric exercise in regards to muscle function and redox homeostasis in a side-by-side comparison.
