Impact of Immunonutrition on the Patients With Cystic Fibrosis

The primary objectives: To evaluate the effect of immunonutrition on the adult patient suffering from cystic fibrosis 1. Safety of immunonutrition 2. The effect of immunonutrition on parameters of oxidative stress 3. The effect of immunonutrition on the inflammatory parameters 4. The effect of immunonutrition on nutrition status Hypothesis The high oxidative stress is present in patients with cystic fibrosis. Immunonutrition has been shown to positively modulate oxidative stress in the different clinical setting however it has not yet been evaluated inpatients with cystic fibrosis who frequently need some support by means of enteral nutrition. We anticipate that the substitution of routine enteral nutrition by immunonutrition will result in improving of oxidative stress parameters.

Flaxseed Modulates Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in CF

Flaxseed (FS) is a safe and well tolerated supplement with an ability to fight inflammation and oxidative stress - a byproduct of daily stress the human body faces everyday and especially with chronic diseases. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease resulting from a mutation in sodium and chloride transport channels that results in pancreatic insufficiency, chronic sinusitis and chronic lung infections. The investigators hypothesize that chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are a part of the chronic exacerbations that are a part of cystic fibrosis. The investigators believe that flaxseed with its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties can help dampen these stressors on the CF lung and potentially result in fewer exacerbations of CF, fewer antibiotics, fewer hospitalizations, and improved well-being.

Cultural Meal and Postprandial Oxidative Stress

This one-year randomized crossover study is proposed to compare the changes of postprandial oxidative stress (POS) after consumption of meals from different cultures in healthy Chinese adults, using a 'real-life, cultural meal' approach. It is hypothesized that the changes of POS differ with meals from different cultures. Four cultural meals are chosen, namely Southern Chinese, Northern Chinese, American, and South Indian, based on the known prevalence of chronic diseases between Caucasians, Chinese and Indians, and within the Southern and Northern Chinese population.

Vitamin E or Lipoic Acid on Serum Oxyphytosterol Concentrations

Background of the study: We now know that plant sterols can oxidize, which results in the formation of oxyphytosterols. Animal studies have suggested that oxyphytosterols are atherogenic components, however this relation has not yet been studied in humans. In our previous study (METC 09-3-088) we have shown in healthy volunteers that serum oxyphytosterol concentrations are linked to oxidative stress status (i.e. we were able to identify high and low sterol oxidizers). From the literature is known that especially type II diabetics and IGT subjects are characterized by increased oxidative stress markers and reduced antioxidant capacity. For this reason we also want to evaluate the oxyphytosterol concentrations in this population. Moreover, we know propose to evaluate the effect of antioxidant supplementation, i.e. vitamin E or lipoic acid, on serum oxyphytosterol concentrations in type II diabetic patients. If possible to lower oxyphytosterol concentrations in these populations this is obviously beneficial in case oxyphytosterols turn out to be atherogenic. The major objective of the present study is to examine the effect of consuming vitamin E (804 mg) or lipoic acid (600 mg) for 4 weeks on fasting oxyphytosterol concentrations in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes.

Effect of Mother DHA Supplementation on Term Newborn.

In the present study, we evaluate the effect of the mother suplementación with DHA during the gestation and lactation on diverse aspects of the development of newborn. The effect on the oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, bone turnover and piscomotor and visual development was studied. Women will in the sixth month of pregnancy, consume a diet balanced during last 3 months of pregnancy and the whole lactation. In addition the women will divide in two groups: one will receive a supplement of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to evaluate the effects on the development of the newborn child; whereas another group will receive a placebo. Different samples of blood of the mother and of mother milk will be taken and we will correlating her lipidic profile with the brain development of the newborn child, evaluated by different tests.

Effect of Mother DHA Supplementation on Premature Newborn.

To date, the investigations in the field of the supplementation with DHA in premature babies have been focused on the study of neuronal and visual development, giving place to contradictory and ambiguous results, because they did not consider in many cases important aspects of this supplementation, such as the mother´s diet, dose, duration, etc., and precise studies have not been performed in the field of the oxidative damage, inflammation and bone development in this population. Hypothesis: If the composition of the mother´s milk is modified on the basis of her diet, a mother supplementation with high doses of DHA will increase proportionally the levels of this fatty acid in her milk, fact that will allows the premature newborn child receive a major dose of this fatty acid, and therefore this way, we will manage to improve the neuronal and visual development and to take part on the inflammatory process, oxidative damage and its evolution, together with the development or bone mass increase in the premature baby. Aims: Overall we aim to evaluate in a multidisciplinary way the effect of a mother supplementation during the lactation with high doses of DHA on the development and wellness of the premature newborn children. We try to deepen into the effect on the neuronal and visual development and to study, for the first time, the effect on the oxidative damage, pro- and antiinflammatory citoquines activity and bone metabolism in this group of newborn babies.
