Filter by:The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness a 13-week community based nutrition education program to assist participants program in improving in physical and emotional well being and to assess if there are differences in outcomes based on a participant's socioeconomic status.
This is a study of tirzepatide in participants with obesity. The main purpose is to learn more about how tirzepatide affects the number of calories participants burn and the amount of food they eat. The study lasted for 28 weeks and will include about 21 visits to the study center.
The major aim of the proposed study is to develop a gender-sensitive individually tailored add-on intervention that focusses on improving individual gender-specific SIRs (subjective illness representations) in obese or overweight individuals. We will investigate whether this will improve compliance with and long-term success of common weight loss interventions. The effectiveness of this intervention in every-day-life with regard to weight-related behavioral changes and weight loss will be evaluated within a randomized controlled setting.To enhance the applicability of the intervention in every-day-life and its dissemination we plan to develop a smart-phone-based intervention.
Purpose: The primary purpose is to determine the combined effects of essential amino acids (EAA) supplementation and high intensity interval training (HIIT) on body composition, muscle characteristics, and muscle architecture in overweight men and women over the course of eight weeks. A secondary purpose is to determine the metabolic effects of EAA supplementation and HIIT on whole body protein turnover, metabolic rate, substrate metabolism, and metabolomics. A tertiary purpose is to evaluate the modulatory effects of sex on body composition, metabolism, metabolic profile, cardiorespiratory fitness, and hunger and satiety in response to EAA supplementation and HIIT. Participants: Healthy overweight and obese men and women (30-50 years) Procedures (methods): In a block randomized design, 78 healthy, overweight or obese men and women will be randomized, to one of four, eight-week intervention groups using a 2:2:2:1 group allocation design: 1) essential amino acids (EAA) supplementation (7.2 grams EAA daily); 2) HIIT, two days per week of cycle ergometry training; 3) EAA + HIIT; or 4) control (CON), receiving no intervention. Measurements of body composition, muscle characteristics, resting metabolic rate, substrate metabolism, and cardiorespiratory fitness will be measured at baseline, 4-weeks, and 8-weeks. Metabolomics and whole body protein turnover will also be measured at baseline and 8-weeks. Subjects will be asked to arrive to testing sessions following a 12 hour fast (except for water), consuming no food, caffeine, or alcohol. Participants will also be asked to abstain from physical activity for 24 hours prior to testing. Subjects will complete one electronic contact (phone/email screening) and up to 22 in-person sessions (enrollment; 5 testing sessions [2 at base, 1 at 4week, 2 at 8week]; 16 training sessions [for HIIT and EAA+HIIT]) over the course of 8 weeks.
This study will compare the systemic and white adipose tissue inflammatory profile of individuals who are classified as lean and obese. Blood and white adipose tissue samples will be collected in the fasted state to assess inflammatory status. There is evidence to suggest that markers of inflammation in the blood and white adipose tissue increase with increasing levels of obesity. However, the white adipose tissue total protein content and phosphorylation of proteins involved in inflammatory pathways has not previously been compared between lean and obese individuals. The investigators hypothesise that obese individuals will have increased levels of inflammation in the blood and white adipose tissue, compared to their lean counterparts.
This study determined effects of a cognitive distraction on amount, preference, and memory of food consumed and perceptions of fullness, hunger, and enjoyment of food in a healthy young-adult population. A randomized controlled crossover study of 119 healthy adults, assigned to begin in either the distracted or control condition, was conducted.
The study looks at how the study medicine affects the level in the blood of a birth control pill. The study also looks at how the study medicine affects the duration of emptying of the stomach. Participants will get 1 injection of study medicine once a week for 12 weeks by a study nurse at the clinic. The study medicine is injected with a thin needle in a skin fold in the stomach. In addition, participants will get 1 birth control pill per day for 8 days before the first dose of the study medicine and again after 10 weeks of dosing with the study medicine. Participants will also get a dose of acetaminophen before the first dose of the study medicine and again after 10 weeks of dosing with the study medicine. Acetaminophen is a mild painkiller but used here to assess the emptying of the stomach. The study will last for about 9 months, but participants will only be in the study for about 6 months. Participants will have 17 clinic visits with the study staff and some will be overnight visits. There will also be 3 phone calls with the study staff. At all visits, participants will have blood drawn along with other clinical assessments. Participants will be asked about their health, diseases and habits including mental health questionnaires. Participants must not be able to become pregnant if they want to participate in the study.
This study will look at participants' body weight from the start to the end of the study. The study will last for about 1½ years. This is to compare the effect on body weight in people taking semaglutide once a week or people taking liraglutide once every day. Participants will either get semaglutide, liraglutide or "dummy" medicine. Which treatment is decided by chance. Participants who receive semaglutide or semaglutide "dummy" medicine will need to take 1 injection once a week. Participants who receive liraglutide or liraglutide "dummy" medicine will need to take 1 injection once daily. The study medicine is injected with a thin needle in a skin fold in the stomach, thigh or upper arm. During the study participants will have talks with study staff about eating healthy food and how to be more physically active. Participants will have 16 clinic visits and 7 phone calls with the study doctor. At 4 of the clinic visits participants cannot eat and drink (water is allowed) for 8 hours before the visit. Women cannot take part if pregnant, breast-feeding or planning to become pregnant during the study period.
The purpose of this protocol is to define an "individualized diet" approach based on obesity related phenotypes (pathophysiology obesity classification), which would increase weight loss, adherence, and weight loss maintenance.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a worksite based Fruit & Vegetable Prescription (Rx) Program designed to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and improve diet quality and other health outcomes of participants. The program includes incentives (coupons) and skill building/educational sessions to increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and other health promoting foods (i.e. legumes, whole grains). The program will focus on delicious, nutritious, affordable, simple and quick meal preparation.
