Filter by:Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is a geriatric syndrome, characterized by reduced muscle mass and function, and increase in body fat. It is classified as a new category of obesity in elderly. It found to be associated with higher risk of physical disability, hospitalization, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disorders and mortality. According to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and The Pacific's (UNESCAP) 2016 population data, Malaysians aged sixty and above contribute to 9.5% of the population. The aging individuals are estimated to reach 23.5% of the population by 2050. In the matter of human health, SO increases the risk of falls and fracture, deteriorates the performance of activities of daily living, enhances the risk of getting multiple health-related outcomes and results in physical disability. Eventually, the quality of life is adversely affected. In financial terms, SO cause significant burden to health care systems. Both hospitalization and cost of care during hospitalization are increased. Therefore, study of SO has experienced a revitalized research interest due to its negative impact on public health. In addition, there is significant lack of literature related to prevalence of SO in community-dwelling elderly in Malaysia, hence, a need to investigate this phenomenon.

The goals of this study are to: 1) test the acceptability of a 14-week family-based intervention with 3-5 year old children and their parents; 2) Estimate the effectiveness of a 14-week family-based intervention designed to show smaller changes, on average, in BMI appropriate for growth; 3) estimate the effectiveness of a 14-week family-based intervention designed to produce changes in television viewing, physical activity, fat, fiber, and fruit and vegetable intake in 3-5 year old Latino children and their parents at post-intervention and Year 1 follow-up.

The overall goal of this project is to determine the inflammation lowering impact of anthocyanin-rich Aronia berries. Inflammation is an underlying mechanism driving the development of several diseases. While an elevation in immune signals in the systemic circulation is commonly attributed to adipose tissue, inflammation is not present in all obese individuals. Adipose tissue must become inflamed, and the inflammation trigger may come from other sources. Microorganisms (microbiome), host tissues, and immune cells residing in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are a key source of pro-inflammatory signals that may cause the host organism to become inflamed. Anthocyanins are bioactive compounds with established anti-inflammatory and microbiome altering properties. We hypothesize that the GIT microbiome is a key determinant of host inflammation than can be manipulated by anthocyanins-rich berries to lower inflammation. We assembled a cohort of individuals, characterized their GIT microbiome and performed anthropometric measurements, basal measures of metabolism and metabolic health, and triglyceridemic, metabolomic, and inflammation responses to a high-fat meal challenge.
Age-related changes in body composition, muscular fitness, and metabolic health resulting in the onset of obesity, sarcopenia, and chronic diseases are profound public health issues that are in need of immediate attention. Effective and feasible methods, such as dietary therapies, are needed to improve health in older adults that in turn lead to independence, enhanced quality of life and reduced hospitalizations. Diet quality and dietary protein intake are vital for maintaining body composition, muscle mass and improved physical performance. Malnutrition in dietary protein intake is a major cause of reduced muscle mass, strength, and function in older adults. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary pattern is a high-quality therapeutic diet known to improve health status in various diverse and at-risk populations resulting in improved heart health, maintained cognitive function and reductions in metabolic diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The primary protein recommendations of the DASH diet are poultry and fish and it is recommended to decrease or exclude red meats from the diet. However, studies have demonstrated that lean red meat incorporated into a DASH-like diet doesn't exacerbate cardiovascular health indices in adults, indicating that lean red meat can be included in the DASH diet without negative effects on heart health. Although studies have reported on the DASH diet in older adults, no studies have investigated the effect of the DASH diet containing lean red meat on measures of body composition, muscle mass or metabolic health under controlled-feeding conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the DASH diet containing daily intakes of lean red meat on indicators of body composition, muscular fitness and biomarkers of metabolic health in adults 65 and older using controlled-feeding and systems biology approaches.
Outcomes of treatments for binge eating spectrum eating disorders are yet to yield desirable results, reporting up to 60-70% of patients remaining symptomatic at post-treatment. Adana City Training and Research Hospital Obesity Center is designed to provide multi-disciplinary health care services and training for groups of obese patients seeking professional help. The center includes a physician, dietitian, physiotherapist, psychologist, public relations officer, and a nurse acting as a life coach. Program is planned to carry initial assessment, health screening, necessary medical attention related to obesity, cognitive change, behavioral change, and sustainability activities. The initial assessment part consisted of one on one interviews of the patient with the physician, psychologist, dietitian, physiotherapist, and the nurse. Then, the patient is consulted with an endocrinologist, cardiologist, psychiatrist, and physical therapy and rehabilitation specialist to elucidate the significant factors that resulted in excessive weight gain and barriers in losing. Patients with severe or mismanaged medical conditions, including chronic diseases, neurological diseases, significant affective and psychotic disorders, and substance abuse or addiction disorders were directed to relevant clinics before registration. The patients who completed the screening are arranged into groups and weekly group meetings are planned. In two group meetings, basic medical knowledge and frequently asked questions are discussed. The center staff and the patients get acquinted. In the following twenty weeks, trainings by the physician, dietitian, psychologist and physiotherapist are conducted about medical information about obesity, using the technology to aid weight loss, what, when, how and why to eat, nutrition groups, ration management, water consumption, self-awareness, stress management, obesity and the association between the psychological processes, warming up and mobilization, correct stance and posture, and adequate physical activity. In addition to group meetings, in monthly individual meetings, the progress of the patients are evaluated. During the course of the program the patients with BED reported improvements in BED episodes and increased weight loss rate which give the idea to conduct a study. The primary goal of the study was to analyze the change in the severity of binge eating disorder in patients registered to the program. We expected to show a decrease in the frequency of the BED episodes in all the patients. The secondary goal includes the analysis of the context of the training program to compare the effectiveness of the topics and the methods. The study was a single-arm, prospective, quasi-experimental study with interrupted time-series design. There were no sampling methods; all patients registered to the center program with binge eating disorder and completed the acquaintance step were asked to be included. Inclusion criteria were having registered to the center for training, passed the first three steps, age between 18 to 65 years, a body mass index (BMI) equal to or over 30, and having binge eating disorder. Patients who failed to attend more than four pieces of training and complete a binge eating evaluation were excluded from the study. The training materials were developed by the trainers and edited by the author for the final version before training. The cases were analyzed for the change in the severity of binge eating disorder in the program. The data collection was performed via socio-demographic information form, binge eating disorder evaluation (BEDE) form, and progress record forms. BEDE was a structured form exclusively using DSM-5 BED diagnosis and the severity criteria1. Progress record form included weekly session content that was administered by a physician, dietitian, psychologist, and the physiotherapist and the monthly individual meetings data. BEDE and progress record forms were applied before the trainings that focuses on cognitive change and repeated every four weeks for 20 weeks. The patients were planned to receive 80 hours of training by the physician, dietitian, psychologist, and the physiotherapist.
