Pediatric obesity is a risk factor for the onset of obesity in adulthood and is a risk factor for various chronic non-communicable diseases. Metabolic syndrome (MS) is the name for a group of risk factors that increase cardiovascular risk and other health problems characterized by the presence of abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycaemia and high blood pressure. Numerous preclinical and clinical data suggest a potential role of the intestinal microbiota in these diseaes. Unfortunately, comparative studies of the gut microbiota are still scarce in pediatric subjects suffering from obesity than obesity complicated by MS. The aim is to study the metagenomics and metabolomics characteristics of the intestinal microbiota in obese children/adolescents with or without MS, that could provide useful data for innovative intervention strategies for these conditions.

The European NAFLD Registry is a prospectively recruited, observational study supporting the study of the clinical phenotype, natural history, disease outcomes and pathophysiology of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis. The ultimate goals are to better understand the drivers of interpatient variation in disease pathophysiology and severity and to utilise this information to develop and validate biomarkers that, singly or in combination, enable detection and monitoring of disease progression and/or from NAFL through NASH to fibrosis and cirrhosis.

Sex Disparities in Hypoxic Sympatholysis and Impact of Obesity

Patients with sleep apnea are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease - with women at potentially greater risk than men. Contributing mechanisms are not well understood, but may be related to how women respond to low oxygen and, given over 70% of patients with sleep apnea are obese, the impact of obesity. This project seeks to increase our understanding of mechanisms that may contribute to sex differences in the cardiovascular response to low oxygen with the hope that this knowledge will improve the efficacy of current therapies and support the discovery of novel therapeutics.

Medication Following Bariatric Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

The aim of this study is to investigate the continued usage of standard diabetes medications in the post operative period following bariatric surgery to determine whether this approach may improve long term diabetes control. At present, the standard of treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes is that all medication is stopped in the immediate postoperative period and only re-started if symptoms of diabetes re-emerge. Although a large proportion of patients with diabetes will initially go in to remission, 80% experience relapse within five years. This study is needed to determine whether continuing medications is not only safe but will improve long term outcomes for patients with diabetes.

All ligatures will be performed in the gastric body starting at the distal body; 5 parallel rows, with the last one in the proximal body.The entire procedure can be completed in 30 min. Oxygen is used for endoscopic air insufflation.Endoscopy is performed using propofol for sedation.
