Intragastric balloon degree of efficacy and duration of effect can be variable and unpredictable. The Spatz Adjustable intragastric balloon (AIGB) was developed to extend implantation to 1 year, decrease balloon volume for intolerance and increase volume for diminishing effect. The aim of the study was to determine the utility/efficacy and responder rate with the Spatz3 AIGB.

The Role of Visfatin in Obesity and Periodontal Disease

Visfatin is an adipokine that plays an important role in immune functions as a growth factor, enzyme, and proinflammatory mediator. The investigators aimed to determine the levels of visfatin, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in both obese/non-obese patients, with/without generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP). Patients were categorized as obese (O) (n=31) or non-obese (nO) (n=19). Groups were divided into four subgroups according to periodontal conditions: (1) periodontally healthy without obesity (nO-Ctrl); (2) GCP without obesity (nO-CP); (3) periodontally healthy with obesity (O-Ctrl); and (4) GCP with obesity (O-CP). Demographic variables and anthropometric and laboratory data were recorded. Periodontal measurements were recorded at baseline and 3rd months after either non-surgical periodontal treatment or calorie restricted diet therapy. At the same time GCF samples were taken from patients to analyze TNF-alpha, IL-6, and visfatin levels.

Oatmeal Effect on N-acyl-phosphatidylethanolamines

N-acyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (NAPEs) and their active metabolites, N-acyl-ethanolamides (NAEs) are lipid satiety factors that are normally biosynthesized in the intestinal tract in response to food intake. Reduced levels of NAPEs and NAEs have been found in obese individuals, and increasing plasma NAPE and NAEs levels may be beneficial to obese individuals trying to lose weight or to keep off weight gain after losing weight. We have found that oatmeal has large amounts of NAPEs, and based on previous mouse studies, we hypothesize that a single dose of dietary oatmeal is sufficient to double plasma NAE from baseline, possibly inducing satiety and increasing basal metabolic rate. To test this hypothesis, we will feed volunteers a single weight-based serving of oatmeal while monitoring its effects on serum glucose, NAPE and NAE levels as well as on subjective satiety.

Healthy Diet for Healthy Moms and Babies

The purpose of this clinical study is to collect baseline information on dietary habits and metabolic risk factors, and to examine the effects of a dietary intervention focusing on fiber and antioxidant rich berries on the development of gestational diabetes, maternal glucose and lipid control and inflammation in obese pregnant women at risk of developing diabetes. With the ongoing epidemic of obesity, the prevalence of gestational diabetes is significantly increasing and the goal of this research is to identify optimal dietary strategies that can reverse this condition or control the rise in blood glucose among those with already developed diabetes.

McGrath Videolaryngoscopy and Direct Laryngoscopy in Morbidly Obese Patients

Our goal is to compare conventional direct laryngoscopy using a Macintosh blade with the McGrath videolaryngoscope for endotracheal intubation in very morbidly obese patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Specifically, we propose to test the primary hypotheses that videolaryngoscopy improves visualization of the vocal cords, defined with modified Cormack and Lehane classification, compared to direct laryngoscopy.

Role of Dopamine Transporter in Glucose Control

Healthy subjects will be enrolled in this study. Each subject will be scanned twice with F18-FP-CIT PET which is commercially available. F18-FP-CIT reflects dopamine transporter availability of striatum. Before each PET scan, subject will be injected either glucose or normal saline. Therefore, PET scan will reflect the changes of dopamine transporter availability after the injection of glucose.
