Filter by:Focusing on newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes participants with overweight and obesity (24kg/m2 ≤ body mass index ≤ 30kg/m2). 50 participants per arm (acarbose & lifestyle combination / vildagliptin & lifestyle combination), using abdominal computed tomography scans and other methods to evaluate the effects of acarbose and vildagliptin on visceral fat distribution in overweight and obesity patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.
The project focuses on prevention of major pregnancy and birth related complications : pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), caesarean section (CS), and large-for-gestational-age (LGA), i.e. the birth weight of the baby exceeds the 90% percentile of birth weights for the specific pregnancy duration. The investigators focus on the pre-conception period, i.e. the pre-conception period of the 2nd pregnancy in women with an excessive weight gain during their 1st pregnancy, aiming to decrease the complications rate in their 2nd pregnancy. Women with an excessive gestational weight gain have obtained the extra weight during a rather short period of time, e.g. 20 kilos in the last 4 or 5 months of their pregnancy. This characteristic distinguishes the target group from the general population with overweight/obesity, in whom the extra weight was acquired during many years and independent from a pregnancy, making a behaviour change more complex. The coaching intervention combines face-to-face counselling with the use of a mobile App connected to medical devices (scale and pedometer). The app monitors important indicators (weight, eating behaviour, physical activity, mental wellbeing), provides coaching through established behavioral change techniques, and is specifically tailored for women with excessive weight gain during the previous pregnancy. The goal is to decrease the rate of pregnancy and birth-related adverse outcomes in the next pregnancy by a healthy life style, starting shortly after their 1st delivery and sustained during the next pregnancy.
Prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled-trial 30 subjects in each groups Group - I consume pure D-allulose 5 g 3 times a day before meal to right after meal (with any liquid) and Group - II control group with non-calorie sweetener erythritol 5 g 3 times a day before meal to right after meal (with any liquid) Total number: n = 60 Either males or females, non-diabetic, aged > 18 years old with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 Primary objectives Efficacy 1. Compare the efficacy of pure D-allulose (psicose) plus conventional therapy on 1.1 visceral fat area (VFA), subcutaneous fat area (SFA), total fat area (TFA) change 1.2 body weight, BMI and body fat percentage (with impedance method) change after 24 weeks of D-allulose (psicose) consumption to erythritol consumption and between pre- and post-intervention. Secondary objectives 1. Efficacy of pure D-allulose (psicose) plus conventional therapy versus erythritol plus conventional therapy on 1.1 insulin resistance, fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c 1.2 adiponectin, leptin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, lipid profiles (total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglyceride, very low-density lipoprotein, LDL, chylomicron), apolipoprotein AI, apolipoprotein AII,apolipoprotein B48, apolipoprotein CIII and apolipoprotein E, free fatty acids 1.4 waist circumference, hip circumference, waist/hip ratio Safety 1. Safety of the study by comparing with conventional therapy, monitoring blood pressure, pulse rate, hematological parameters and urinalysis
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and Obesity-Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS) are common conditions in obesity, which may influence the prognosis in patients undergoing surgery. There is a need for simple screening tools to identify such patients at high risk. The current multicenter observational study aims to investigate occurrence of OSA and OHS in obese individuals undergoing elective abdominal surgery and further address its impact on perioperative and postoperative complications.
The overall objective of this research is to test, among families with children age 2-5 years, the immediate and longer-term impacts of a home-based intervention to improve household routines associated with reduced obesity risk. The investigators primary hypothesis is that, compared to control, children in the intervention group will have lower BMI following the 6-month intervention period and 18-month follow-up period. The secondary outcomes are change in children's % body fat, waist circumference and obesity-related behaviours: sleep, activity, sedentary behaviour, family meals, and dietary intake. Although child outcomes are the focus of this evaluation, changing household routines may also improve parent behaviour; thus, the investigators will assess change in parent behaviours and weight outcomes. This study will also assess the cost-effectiveness of the intervention from a societal perspective.
The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of an electronic-based intervention to help pregnant overweight and obese women gain an appropriate amount of weight and improve their delivery i.e. to reduce the rate of labour procedures and interventions. We chose a composite outcome including instrumental delivery and Caesarean section, as clinically relevant outcomes because the mode of delivery is one of the major goals of the obstetrical management and is is strongly associated with body mass index and gestational weight gain.

This is a prospective, single-centre case control comparison of expression of target genes responsible for energy utilisation, mitochondrial function and oxidative stress and levels of histone acetylation/ DNA methylation in obese and non-obese adult cardiac surgery patients. The study aims to test several inter-related hypotheses in a consecutive sequence of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.
The objective is to investigate neuro-anatomical correlates of gastrointestinal taste stimulation by means of functional MRI before and after bariatric surgery. Intragastric administration of glucose, monosodium glutamate, chloroquine and placebo is followed by functional brain MRI in obese humans before and 3 months after surgery.
This research project will provide insight into the efficacy and safety of aspiration therapy in the management of obesity and its comorbidities in the Asian population, and will determine if there is a role for this novel endoscopic device in the treatment algorithm of obesity in the investigators' local regions.
