Efficacy of Personal Pharmacogenomic Testing as an Educational Tool in the Pharmacy Curriculum

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of personal genomic educational testing (PGET) on student knowledge and clinical skills surrounding pharmacogenomic testing to ensure it is of educational benefit to our student population. Students will be provided the opportunity to opt-in to test their own pharmacogenomic panel while participating in the standard curriculum. Students will have the option of using their own reports or dummy reports during classroom activities. Our hypothesis is that those students who have their own pharmacogenomics tested will show better overall performance.

A Study to Compare Two Different Formulations of Lasmiditan in Healthy Participants

The main purpose of this study is to compare the amount of lasmiditan that gets into the blood stream and how long it takes the body to get rid of it, when given as a oral-disintegrating (OD) tablet compared to immediate-release (IR) tablet formulation. The information about any adverse effects experienced will be collected and the tolerability of lasmiditan when administered as OD tablet will also be evaluated. Screening is required within 28 days prior to the start of the study. For each participant, the total duration of the clinical trial will be about 5 weeks, including screening.

Chronic inflammation, which is defined as a persistent, low-grade inflammatory response within the body, is associated with many of the negative health conditions which are prevalent in our society today. It is most well-known for its role in the progression of diseases including obesity, metabolic syndrome, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Chronic inflammation is also linked to many of the underlying factors associated with disease development including perturbations in sleep, and mental health status such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, and quality of life. Natural killer cells, commonly referred to as NK cells, are a subset of white blood cells that play an important role in the coordination of inflammation in the body. Although many interventions aimed at controlling chronic inflammation and enhancing NK cell number and activity have been explored, relatively few have been administered without significant barriers. Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive hemp derivative, is a potential, attractive therapeutic target. However, there is very little information in humans that addresses the potential of CBD to improve your health and immune function. The overall goal of this study is to explore the effects of 8-weeks of CBD supplementation on mental and physical health, sleep measures, and NK cell number and cytotoxic function. Specific Aim 1. Explore the effect of 8-weeks of CBD administration on sleep measures as well as measures of mental and physical health in conjunction with measurements of NK cell number and function.

Reference Values of Aerobic Fitness in the Contemporary Paediatric Population

In most pediatric medical conditions, tremendous progress in pediatrics has significantly improved the overall prognosis and transferred the mortality from childhood to adulthood. Nevertheless, chronic diseases remain the leading cause of death and physical inactivity appears to be a major aggravating factor. Yet, a good physical activity has a positive impact on quality of life and prevents future health morbidities, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, after focusing on the survival of children with chronic diseases, more attention is being given to health-related quality of life and secondary prevention. In this context, the cardio-pulmonary exercise test (CPET), which is a non-invasive and dynamic examination, has become the gold standard to identify subjects with impaired physical capacity and to identify the causes of their limitations (muscular, cardiac, respiratory, behavioral, etc.). Moreover, CPET is the key examination to enroll patients in personalized physical rehabilitation programs (muscle deconditioning, respiratory limitation, etc.). Despite a growing interest in CPET and individualized rehabilitation programs for chronic diseases, the investigators still face the lack of reference values for pediatric CPET. In current practice, many CPET pediatric laboratories use the reference values of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) defined by Cooper et al. in 1984, from a cohort of 109 healthy children. However, their equations are linear and based on weight only. Non linear equations and the use of other anthropometric variables may be relevant in pediatrics. For instance, in the current era, normal CPET pediatric values should consider the prevalence of overweight and obesity in childhood general population (respectively 30% and 10% in Europa and 35% and 25% in North America), as well as in the population of children with chronic disease. In the past decade, our group has developed a research program on physical capacity in children, with a focus on pediatric CPET and physical rehabilitation, from a cohort of nearly 1000 exercise tests in children. The lack of reliable pediatric reference values for VO2max, and all CPET variables as well, has become an important issue. In this study, the investigators aim to define pediatric reference CPET values from a large cohort of 6 to 17 year-old children, using several anthropometric variables to define the most appropriate Z-scores equations (part 1). The investigators will also validate the Z-scores equations using an independent population (part 2).

The Effect of Transcranial Direct Stimulation on Cognitive Functions of Healthy Adults

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS) has been used to improve cognitive functions in healthy young adults. Purpose: To investigate the effect of TDCS application on different cortex regions on cognitive function. Methods: Sixty individuals aged 18-30 were included in the study. The participants were randomly divided into the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (Left DLPFC Group)(n=20), the right posterior parietal cortex (Right PPC Group)(n=20), and the sham group (Sham Group)(n=20). tDCS was applied for 20 minutes on weekdays for 2 weeks. The participants were evaluated in terms of cognitive functions with Neuropsychometric Test Battery before and after treatment.
