Test Properties of Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test: Effect of Verbal Instructions and Focus Techniques

Start date: July 20, 2022
Phase:
Study type: Observational

The Lower Quadrant Y-Balance Test (LQYBT) is a landmark test used in assessing lower extremity performance, determining risk factors for injury, and making return-to-sport decisions. Studies have shown that the individual's focus of attention affects balance. The literature, has shown that the use of external focus is more effective than the use of internal focus in the execution of a movement.Consistent with these findings, the use of an external focus instruction during the LQYBT may lead to achieve more realistic and a higher performance outcome than the test result with standard instructions. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the effects of using different instructions and focusing techniques on test performance on the LQYBT. The secondary aim was to investigate the reliability of the different instructions and focus tests we used for the LQYBT. Hypothesis of the study that test performance can be further enhanced by differentiating the instructions and focus techniques. A more effective assessment of individual performance may help us to make a more realistic decision to return to sport.

High-heeled Shoes in a Sample of Young Women

Start date: December 15, 2023
Phase:
Study type: Observational [Patient Registry]

At a postural level, many doctors, physiotherapists and chiropractors are convinced that lower back pain induced by heels is due to an increase in lumbar lordosis associated with an anterior pelvic tilt; this thought is even shared by the American Chiropractic Association and the American Physical Therapy Association. Furthermore, in most of the websites consulted, even by non-experts, the reason for the onset of spinal pain is attributed to hyperlordosis and pelvic anteversion. However, this thought is not entirely in agreement with other scientific publications. Therefore it is necessary to pay attention to online searches which often answer these questions without taking EBM into account. None of the studies reported above take into consideration the time factor. In fact, all the studies have evaluated the immediate changes brought about by heel raising. Women who complain of lower back pain when wearing high-heeled shoes rarely experience pain as soon as they start wearing them. The objective of the research arises from these considerations. The aim of this study (primary outcome) is to investigate whether wearing high-heeled shoes for at least 2 hours modifies the spinopelvic parameters compared to the barefoot condition and as soon as the shoes are worn. The secondary outcome will be to verify in the sample analyzed whether there are different behaviors between the subgroups of those who have complained in their anamnesis and those who have never complained of lower back pain when using high-heeled shoes for a few hours.

Bioavailability of Hydroxytyrosol in Healthy Adult Humans

Start date: February 3, 2024
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Brief summary: There is current scientific interest in hydroxytyrosol due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, efficient protection of vascular tissue and ability to neutralise free radicals via hydrogen donation. Recognised as the potent polyphenol within a commercially available olive-fruit water (OliPhenolia®), data from this research will determine the dose of OliPhenolia® required for the optimum absorption and metabolism of hydroxytyrosol. The primary aim of this research is to identify the dose of hydroxytyrosol (0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 mg∙kg-1) within OliPhenolia® that demonstrates the greatest area under the plasma concentration curve for hydroxytyrosol over a four-hour period. A secondary aim is to assess maximum concentration (CMAX) and time to maximum concentration (TMAX) of total hydroxytyrosol and secondary metabolites (Tyrosol, HT-3-glucoronide, HT-3-sulphate, 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic Acid, Homovanillic Acid and Oleuropein) following consumption of 3 randomised doses of OliPhenolia® on separate occasions with healthy adult volunteers.

The Development and Health of the Intestinal Flora During the First Year of Life

PREVENT
Start date: February 26, 2024
Phase:
Study type: Observational

In this research study (PREVENT 1), Alba Health, in collaboration with academic institutions (Uppsala University, COPSAC and University of Antwerp) is investigating the association between the developing gut microbiota (collection of microbes present in the human gut) in the first year of life and lifestyle, wellbeing and health in a Swedish population. The study is the first of its kind in a Swedish population to collect and associate microbiome composition to an extensive family history and health questionnaire, stool colour and crying type, building on learnings from previous studies performed in other countries, such as the HELMI and COPSAC studies (HELMI - Finnish Health and Early Life Microbiota cohort from the University of Helsinki in Finland; COPSAC - Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood in Denmark). The PREVENT 1 study is an observational research study led by Alba Health involving 300 families in Sweden with children between 0 and 12 months of age at the time of the study's start. After providing informed consent, the participating families will be asked to provide three stool samples from their child (the sample collection is not invasive and does not cause discomfort) and will be asked to answer questionnaires on lifestyle, well-being and family health. The participating families will not be asked to change their lifestyle beyond sample and data collection. From the collected stool samples, we will extract microbial DNA and subject this to deep metagenomic sequence analysis. The study will only analyze microbial DNA, any human related material will be discarded. The stool samples will be destroyed within one month of sequencing (maximum 3 months from collection). The data will be stored according to GDPR and Swedish law, with informed consent in Sweden and with appropriate security measures. All research will be carried out in Sweden.

Effectiveness of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Adults

Start date: March 1, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The goal of this controlled, experimental study is to learn about the effects of 10 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on physical performance, vascular circulation, biochemical parameters, and composition of the intestinal microbiota in young healthy men depending on the frequency of single treatments. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Do 10 treatments of hyperbaric oxygen therapy induce significant changes in physical performance levels, vascular circulation, and concentrations of biochemical parameters in young, healthy men? 2. Does the body's response to 10 treatments of hyperbaric oxygen therapy differ depending on the frequency of treatments? 3. Does a series of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments induce significant changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiota, metabolome, and functional status of the intestines? Participants are exposed to hyperoxia under hyperbaric conditions or form a control group with no treatment.

Fatigue and Recovery: a Comparison Between Trail and Marathon

MARA-TRAIL
Start date: December 28, 2023
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Road marathon is a famous running race known for hundreds of years. Trail running is an emerging running discipline which count new runners every year. Trail running and road marathon are two running endurance disciplines which differed by variation of elevation and nature of the terrain. While marathon is essentially run on flat roads, trail races are realized on steep paths (mountain, desert…) with an important variation of elevation. Neuromuscular, biomechanical and physiological consequences are different depending on the discipline, especially with a greater eccentric contribution in trail running. In spite of this characteristic, trail runners take part in several races longer than 40 km per year, while road runners participate in one to two marathons per year.

A Study of LY3938577 in Healthy Participants and Participants With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM)

Start date: May 15, 2024
Phase: Phase 1
Study type: Interventional

The main purpose of this study is to look at the amount of the study drug LY3938577 that gets into the blood stream and how long it takes the body to get rid of it. At a later stage of this study (part B and C) the blood sugar lowering effect and the duration of action of LY3938577 will be evaluated compared to Insulin Degludec. The study will also evaluate the safety and tolerability of LY3938577 and information about any side effects experienced will be collected. The study will be conducted in three parts (A, B, and C). Healthy participants in part A will receive one single dose of LY3938577 or a placebo, whereas participants in Parts B and C with T1DM will receive single doses of either LY3938577 or Insulin Degludec given via intravenous (IV) infusion. The study will last up to approximately 5.5, 10 and 13 weeks for parts A, B, and C, respectively, including screening period.
