A Pilot Trial of Disposable Nitrous Oxide Canisters in Providing Pain Control During Burn Dressing Changes

Improvements in burn care have resulted in increased survival. Despite these improved outcomes one of the leading challenges of burn care remains providing adequate analgesia during routine wound care and dressing changes. The traditional use of narcotics is challenging as the therapeutic window between analgesia and suppression of breathing becomes narrow with the intense pain and high doses of narcotics needed for dressing changes.

Cognitive Remediation Therapy for Participants With Late-Life Schizophrenia

Cognitive Remediation (CR) involving restorative and strategy-based methods has been previously validated in a pilot study for late life schizophrenia (LLS), where CR demonstrated a moderate effect on overall cognition. This study proposes to study the efficacy of CR in a larger cohort of participants with LLS and to assess the interaction of medication management with CR on cognitive outcomes. Eligible participants will receive CR during 12 weeks. CR consists of a series of computerized exercises targeting various cognitive functions, such as memory, attention and processing speed. It will be administered during facilitated group sessions consisting of 4-6 people. The study will recruit 40 participants with the aim to enroll 30 LLS participants age 55 or older who will undergo the CR intervention for two, 2-hour weekly classes over 12 weeks (24 classes in total). There will be baseline assessments (clinical and NP) prior to enrollment in the classes. In order to assess whether there has been a change in cognition, and some of the assessments will be repeated after the 12-week intervention.

PLAY (PhysicaL ActivitY) Policy Study

This study examines the effectiveness and appropriateness of a written physical activity policy implemented in licensed centre-based childcare on the physical activity levels of toddlers (1-2) and preschoolers (3-5 years). Half of the childcare centres will adopt the physical activity policy while the other half will continue with their typical daily programming and care. It is hypothesized that children enrolled in childcare centres that adopt the policy will display increased levels of physical activity during, and after participating in the policy intervention compared to children enrolled in centres that do not adopt the policy.

The Effect of Experimentally Decreasing Sedentary Behaviour on Subjective Well-being

This study will explore the causality between outcomes of subjective well-being and sedentary behavior, through experimentally decreasing the sedentary behavior levels of university students. Half of the eligible participants will receive a behavioral counseling intervention to increase non-sedentary behavior over one week, while the other half will receive no instructions. After one week, all participants will receive no instructions and continue to wear the inclinometer for another week.

Asthma With Nasal Polyposis

Asthma is often associated with various comorbidities that may influence its clinical expression. Among those, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) is observed in 5% of cases. Asthmatic patients with CRSwNP appear to have more severe and poorly controlled asthma, as well as greater bronchial and systemic inflammation, especially those using inhaled corticosteroids as control medication. However, this remains to be validated. In the last decade, there has been interest labeled for phenotyping of asthma and CRSwNP. However, there is scarce data on the phenotype of asthma with CRSwNP. This study aims to describe the phenotype of asthmatic patients with CRSwNP according to the clinical, physiological and inflammatory characteristics and whether there is a more severe phenotype related to the dose of inhaled corticosteroids and the percentage of induced sputum eosinophils.

Fixation In-situ vs Removal for Midfoot Lisfranc Injuries

Injuries to the midfoot tarsometatarsal joint, or Lisfranc joint, are notoriously debilitating. Poor functional outcomes following Lisfranc injuries have motivated surgeons to look for potential improvements in post-operative care. There are currently no evidence-based guidelines to direct implant removal for patients with operatively treated Lisfranc injuries. Routine implant removal has significant implications related to health care costs, lost time from work, potential surgical complications, and possibly functional impairment. Therefore, stakeholders including patients, surgeons, employers, and administrators will benefit from evidence-based guidelines for implant removal following operatively treated Lisfranc injuries. To date, there has not been a prospective randomized study evaluating the efficacy of implant removal compared with implant retention for Lisfranc injuries. The aim of this study is to directly compare patient-reported and radiographic outcomes, in order to provide robust evidence for optimal post-operative treatment regimens regarding implant removal or retention for operatively treated Lisfranc injuries.

MSG Use With 18F-DCFPyL PET/CT Imaging

18F-DCFPyL is an agent that binds to prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA). Due to high levels of PSMA in prostate cancer, treatments targeting PSMA have been developed to deliver therapy to these specific target cells. Unfortunately when this treatment is delivered there is radiotracer uptake in the salivary glands and kidneys, not related to cancer, which causes dry mouth and causes patients to stop treatment. It is proposed that having tomato juice containing monosodium glutamate (MSG) may reduce radiotracer uptake in the salivary glands and kidneys and reduce damage to these tissues.
