The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of 3 different treatment regimens in reducing or clearing the Hepatitis B Virus in patients infected with HIV and Hepatitis B (co-infection)
A new treatment for indigenous people with mental illness in remote communities has been developed. The study hypothesis is that this new treatment will result in better outcomes for clients and carers than the outcomes of clients and carers who do not receive the treatment. The treatment is a combination of a talking treatment and sharing of stories about mental health. The treatment will be delivered to the client with their chosen carer and with the local Aboriginal Mental Health Worker or Health Worker. The treatment will be given by the research team - a psychiatrist and an indigenous research officer. The trial will compare two groups of clients - a control group which is receiving 'treatment as usual', and the group which receives the new treatment. Measures of social functioning and symptoms of mental illness will be administered at base line and every six months for two years.
Australian Trial in Acute Hepatitis C (ATAHC) A prospective non-randomised dual arm longitudinal cohort of newly acquired hepatitis C infection into which participants will be enrolled and then followed at 3 monthly intervals over a 3 year period. All participants will be offered a 24 week course of pegylated interferon alfa 2a which will be commenced within 12 weeks of screening (patients coinfected with HIV will be offered 24 weeks with pegylated interferon alfa 2a plus ribavirin).
This study will examine whether food is a cost-effective method for improving treatment compliance for TB patients in Timor Leste. Our hypothesis is that the provision of locally available, locally acceptable, cheap and highly nutritious food at the clinic will encourage patients to come for daily directly observed treatment, and thus improve the chance of TB cure and decrease the chance of the development of TB drug resistance. Primary outcome will be successful completion of treatment and secondary outcomes will include treatment compliance and clinical and biological measures of nutritional improvement.
Cardiovascular disease is the main cause of death in patients on dialysis for end stage renal disease. Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants have been shown to be protective in the general population. A diet of fish and fruit, which will provide the fatty acids and the antioxidants is being tried in dialysis patients to assess the effect on cardiovascular disease in this high risk group.

The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal treatment strategy for MDD patients with melancholic features who do not respond to a standard daily dose. This study will allow investigators to mimic standard clinical practice. During the first 2 weeks of treatment, clinical evaluation of individual patient tolerability and efficacy will enable the dose of duloxetine to be adjusted. Patients allocated to the Flex group may have their daily dose of duloxetine adjusted in the attempt to elicit a clinical response.
The primary objective of this study is to show that a prandial insulin regimen, consisting of premeal insulin lispro "mid mixture" (or a combined regimen of insulin lispro "mid mixture" and insulin lispro "low mixture") plus metformin will result in significantly better overall glycemic control (lower HbA1c) at endpoint than once-daily insulin glargine plus metformin. Insulin lispro "mid mixture" consists of 50% insulin lispro and 50% NPL. Insulin lispro "low mixture" consists of 25% insulin lispro and 75% NPL. In a substudy of approximately 60 patients, additional data will be collected on markers associated with risk of atherosclerosis or cardiovascular disease in the context of a controlled, outpatient, high-fat test meal.
