Quality of Life Related to Activities of Elderly Individuals Living at Home or Nursing Homes

For older persons, successful aging generally involves staying active and maintaining social interactions. Active aging involves more engagement in enjoyable activities. The hypothesis of this study was to determine the effects of multi-purpose activities on the quality of life of elderly individuals living either in a nursing home or in their own homes. Sixty-seven volunteers aged >60 were surveyed: 34 living in a nursing home and 33 living at-home. Participants performed activities consisting of physical, cognitive tasks, and handicrafts twice weekly for 12 weeks. Each participant completed the 36-item Short Form Health Survey both before and after the program, and the results were compared between the groups.

The Effect of Tai Chi and Therapy by Dance and Movement on Blood Irisin Levels in Older Adults Over 65 Years of Age.

The aim of this project is to estimate the effects of therapy with dance and movement and Tai Chi on irisin plasma levels, a myokine with proven neuroprotective effects, in the context of baseline levels of cognitive function and physical performance in seniors over 65 years of age. It is empirically verified that physical activity can have a positive effect on cognitive function even in individuals with mild cognitive impairment. There may be a number of reasons why this is the case. Recently, research investigating the relationship between the secretion of certain myokines and their neuroprotective effects has gained importance. One of these myokines is irisin, which has recently been shown to have beneficial effects on the CNS by upregulating the expression of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus in an animal model. Increased irisin levels as a consequence of exercise have recently been partially demonstrated in humans. What type of physical activity is most effective in terms of its effect on cognitive function in humans is another important scientific challenge. The possibility of influencing endocrine secretion of bioactive substances with proven effects on synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis and neuroprotection through effective therapies may help to combat neurodegenerative diseases, the prevalence of which is increasing with the average age of the population. According to Alzheimer's Disease International, 50 million people worldwide were affected by some form of neurodegenerative disease in 2017. The number of people affected is still rising. It is predicted that this number will reach 75 million sufferers by 2030 (https://www.alz.co.uk/research/statistics). Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis are the two most common manifestations of neurodegenerative diseases. The effect of therapy with dance and movement and the effect of Tai Chi on blood irisin levels in the context of cognitive function and physical performance levels, has not yet been conclusively demonstrated.

Training Early Childhood Educators to Increase Children's Physical Activity: The TEACH-Preschooler Study

This study aims to determine the effect of delivering a physical activity e-learning course to early childhood educators on young children's physical activity and sedentary behaviour while at childcare. It is hypothesized that levels of physical activity will increase and levels of sedentary behaviours will decrease during time spent in childcare in a sample of children who attend early childcare centres where early childhood educators have completed the physical activity e-learning course compared to children in centres where early childhood educators are randomized to not receive the intervention. Differences in changes in several secondary outcomes including fundamental movement skills, parent's perceptions of children's fundamental movement skills, children's cognitive development, emotional symptoms, conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, peer relationship problems and prosocial behaviours will also be examined.

Hispanic men and children experience health disparities for overweight and obesity-related medical conditions, and therefore family level obesity prevention programs for Hispanic populations are needed. 'Healthy Dads Healthy Kids' is the first program to primarily target fathers for obesity prevention for themselves and their children, with significant and clinically relevant treatment effects. This is an efficacy trial to assess a culturally adapted 'Healthy Dads Healthy Kids' for Hispanic families.

This controlled quasi experimental intervention study follows the MRC framework for complex interventions (Bleijenberg et al. 2018) aiming to promote educators' individual aspect of occupational well-being. The purpose of this study is: 1) to evaluate the effectiveness of 8-workweek SHINE (= Self-Help INtervention for Educators) on educator's individual aspect of occupational well-being comparing intervention and control groups and 2) to describe the possible associating factors for the effectiveness of the intervention (if any) and 3) to evaluate SHINE's acceptability (utility and usability) within intervention group.

Influence of Preschool Children's Fundamental Movement Skills, Physical Activity, and Physical Fitness on Executive Function: A Prospective Observation Study

Background: Early childhood is the most critical and rapid period of complete and healthy physical and cognitive development in human life. Executive function appears in early childhood and develops rapidly through complex coaction between environment and developmental processes. The preschool period is also characterized by a rapid growth in fundamental movement skills, physical activity and physical fitness. The scientific research on the relationship between fundamental movement skills, physical activity, physical fitness and executive function in preschoolers remains to be explored. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the cross-sectional relationship between fundamental movement skills, physical activity, physical fitness and executive function in preschool children while controlling for potential confounding variables, examine the prospective influence (independent and interactive role) of preschooler's fundamental movement skills, physical activity and physical fitness on executive function, observe the preschoolers' fundamental movement skills, physical activity, physical fitness and executive function changes with age, and investigate gender and age differences in preschoolers' fundamental movement skills, physical activity, physical fitness and executive function. Method: The proposed study consists of two phases, phase 1 is a cross-sectional study. Five hundred and five children aged 3-5 years will be recruited. The Test of Gross Motor Development Third Edition (TGMD-3) was used to assess children's fundamental movement skills. Preschool children's physical activity was monitored by accelerometer ActiGraph GT3X-BT. Physical fitness was tested using handgrip, 4*10m shuttle run, 20m shuttle run, 30s sit-ups, sit and reach, and balance beam. Executive function was tested by computer-based tasks including animal stroop, safari training and stop signal task. Phase 2 is a 12-month follow-up study. In the phase 2, all children enrolled in the baseline study will be followed up, the measurements and contents of the follow-up are the same as the baseline instrument.

Social innovation in aging needs to bring new ideas and services to meet new social and welfare needs identified in recent years. In our environment, people ≥60 years old accounted for 20% -24% of the population in 2015, and it is expected to increase to ≥30% by 2050. Older people living in rural areas have been severely affected by confinement, and new needs are being generated. To better understand the needs, an innovative element of this project is to involve the elderly-young people (60-74 years) from rural areas in the generation of solutions, which will make these solutions especially adapted to their needs. It also aims to study the effectiveness of a health education intervention based on participatory research, where young seniors co-create and implement the intervention among their peers, and focused on improving lifestyles, to prevent or to improve sarcopenia. The objectives of this project are: To characterize the elderly (60 to 74 years) who live independently in rural areas of the province of Tarragona, to actively involve them, through a process of participatory research to generate solutions. To achieve this goal, it is proposed to make a diagnosis of their health status (lifestyles, risk of malnutrition and sarcopenia), and conduct group interviews (focus groups) including earlier elderly people from rural areas. In addition, participants will receive the intervention co-created by themselves, and the effectiveness of the intervention created will be evaluated.
