The Potential of Oxytocin to Reduce Opioid Abuse Liability and Pain Among Older Adults

Some research suggests that administration of oxytocin with oxycodone may reduce its abuse liability and improve its ability to reduce pain. In a 6-session laboratory study, we will be evaluating the effects of oxycodone and oxytocin (combined and separately, across sessions) on experimentally-induced pain, subjective effects, and decision-making.

It has a significant impact on the quality of life.The use of opioid analgesics is recommended for the treatment of moderate to severe cancer pain.The misuse of opioid analgesics is an international public health problem.Different scales have been developed to help the prescriber screen for the risk of misuse in the general population. Patients with cancer-related pain are also at risk for aberrant opioid-related behaviors, misuse or addiction. The main objectif of this study is to validate of the screening scale for the misuse of opioid analgesics in patients with chronic pain related to cancer. (Prescription Opioid Misuse Index - POMI).

Efficiency of Facial Expression Diagnostic System in Pain Assessment After Geriatric Surgery

By integrating the methods used in the assessment of pain in geriatric surgery patients with literature, theory and research, this study aims to: evaluate the effectiveness of the facial diagnosis system in the evaluation of pain after geriatric surgery. The research hypotheses are as follows: H1: In the evaluation of pain after geriatric surgery, there is a concordance between the pain score evaluated by the patient and the pain score obtained from facial expression diagnostic system analysis. H1: In the evaluation of pain after geriatric surgery, there is a correlation between the pain score evaluated by the nurse and the pain score obtained from the analysis of the facial expression diagnosis system. H1: In the evaluation of pain after geriatric surgery, there is a correlation between the pain score evaluated by the patient and the pain score evaluated by the nurse.

Assessing Symptom and Mood Dynamics in Pain Using the Smartphone Application SOMA

This study relies on the use of a smartphone application (SOMA) that the investigators developed for tracking daily mood, pain, and activity status in acute pain, chronic pain, and healthy controls over four months.The primary goal of the study is to use fluctuations in daily self-reported symptoms to identify computational predictors of acute-chronic pain transition, pain recovery, and/or chronic pain maintenance or flareups. The general study will include anyone with current acute or chronic pain, while a smaller sub-study will use a subset of patients from the chronic pain group who have been diagnosed with chronic low back pain, failed back surgery syndrome, or fibromyalgia. These sub-study participants will first take part in one in-person EEG testing session while completing simple interoception and reinforcement learning tasks and then begin daily use of the SOMA app. Electrophysiologic and behavioral data from the EEG testing session will be used to determine predictors of treatment response in the sub-study.

Effect of Virtual Reality and Music Therapy on Pain Relief in OPH Operations

Outpatient hysteroscopy can serve as a diagnostic procedure to evaluate for abnormal uterine bleeding, such as menorrhagia or postmenopausal bleeding. This study focuses on the therapeutic aspect of outpatient hysteroscopy, such as myomectomy, polypectomy, intrauterine adhesiolysis and removal of lost intrauterine devices, etc. Apart from the conventional polyp scissors and biopsy forceps, there are also emerging hysterscopic tissue removal systems, such as Truclear®, that can decrease the operation time and increase success of outpatient hysteroscopic operations. On such occasions, the outpatient hysteroscopic operation needs to be re-arranged in an inpatient setting in the operation theatre under regional or general anesthesia. Therefore, improvement in pain management can reduce participants' health care experience, participants' anaesthetic and procedural risks, decrease healthcare costs, and reduce inconvenience to participants. This randomized controlled trial aims at evaluating the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions (virtual reality and music therapy) in pain management during hysteroscopic operations. It can hopefully provide more local clinical data to explore the role of nonpharmacological techniques in pain control, hence improve our participants' experience in hysteroscopic operations and the potential of providing more hysteroscopic operations as an outpatient setting.

Virtual Reality; the Effect on Pain Reduction During an External Version.

SUMMARY Rationale: The use of an external cephalic version (ECV) to rotate the fetus from a non-cephalic to cephalic presentation reduces the rate of caesarean section by approximately two-thirds in term pregnancies with breech presentation. Reducing pain during external cephalic version can contribute to an increase in success rate and consequently reduce the number of cesarean sections. Literature about the effectivity of virtual reality (VR) on acute pain reduction seems promising. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to explore the effect of VR on pain during ECV. Secondary objectives are the rate of successful ECV procedures and to explore tolerability, feasibility and patient satisfaction of VR use. Study design: The study concerns a non-blinded, single centre, randomised controlled trial. Study population: Eligible women who fulfill the inclusion criteria and are scheduled for an external cephalic version in the Zuyderland Medical Centre location Heerlen. Intervention: The study population will be randomly divided into the intervention group (VR-group) or the standard care group. The intervention group can choose for an immersive guided relaxation VR experience or an interactive VR experience during the external version additional to the usual standard care. The participants randomised to the standard care group receive the usual standard care given during external version. Main study parameters/endpoints: The primary outcome is pain measured on a numeric rating scale (NRS). A total of 42 patients have to be included in each group. This means that a total of 84 women will have to be included in the study. Nature and extent of the burden and risks associated with participation, benefit and group relatedness: Each participating woman is asked to complete a questionnaire after using VR and the degree of pain perception is questioned on the basis of a 0-10 score (NRS). The study population experiences a very small medical risk when participating to this study. They can experience side-effects of VR for example dizziness or nausea and in rare cases epileptic insults.
